They’re at it again…

Kalifornia is trying AGAIN to ban all lead ammunition…

This has been tried before, but they limited it to areas where the Condors and other wildlife refuges are.  But low and behold a Condor STILL died of lead poisoning…

In November, one of the oldest condors in Central California died from lead poisoning after being found with tiny bullet fragments and a .22-caliber slug in his gullet that he apparently swallowed with a mouthful of meat.

The 9-year-old giant was one of the earliest released in a condor recovery program along the Big Sur coast. His death — and the recent death of a golden eagle near Sacramento — are being highlighted by health and environmental groups who want California to become the first state to impose a statewide ban on the use of lead bullets for hunting.

/snip/

Now health-care advocates are taking a different tack, arguing that lead bullet fragments in game such as venison are neurotoxins that can harm children and developing fetuses.

And it’s for the children… This is the new tactic, to hell with the animals, PEOPLE WILL DIE OMGELEVENSIES!!!!1111

“There is no safe level of lead for human consumption,” said state Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, whose closely watched lead bullet ban bill was passed this month by the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee.

/snip/

The NRA and NSSF both oppose the bill, for good reason. This becomes a defacto ban…

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that nationwide there are 400,000 pieces of lead shot per acre in wild game territory that can be eaten or washed into waterways, and that the 60,000 metric tons of lead fired off in 2012 is second largest use of lead behind storage batteries.

Doing the math, this means that something over 4 BILLION rounds were fired last year in the US alone (based on 230gr .45 slug the numbers come out to 3.9294B)

So that means all 80 million gun owners must have fired at least 50 rounds apiece last year… Sure…

However there was ‘one’ voice of sanity…

“There are gaps in the prohibition with depredation being one and private ranching being another,” said John McCamman, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service condor coordinator. “And the other thing that nobody talks about is the poaching that goes on, and they probably don’t care that there’s a lead prohibition.”

So if we go to depleted uranium, will they then die of radiation poisoning???

Sigh…

  1. I heard about the “move to remove” lead ammunition from California to save a bird or two.

I’m actually a conservationist at heart and would prefer to see wild species have some elbow room where it’s practical. The “save the condor” crowd is the same one that wants to “save the spotted owl”. Birds fly. They are completely mobile. Some condors attack snakes, are bitten and die. Others land on carrion (road kill) on the Interstate and are struck by 18-wheel rigs and die. Saving the condors, the spotted owl and the Delta Chub (trash fish) is what people with too much time on their hands in California do. And when they don’t do that, they occupy Wall Street.

It’s nearly impossible to save every single wild bird or creature outside of putting them in captivity where they will be cared for. I’m not fond of the spread of the human stain either, but it’s going to happen and some species will not survive the process. Finding a piece of lead in a dead bird’s stomach is not a valid reason for banning all ammunition. It only really makes sense in San Francisco.

  2. +1 to LL – birds are mobile. Spotted owls nest in billboards as well as trees. And poachers don’t care about game/hunting/shooting ban laws.

Imagine that. Oh – and California legislators are nuts … but you already knew that.

  3. ““There is no safe level of lead for human consumption,” said state Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, whose closely watched lead bullet ban bill was passed this month by the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee.”

So he’s worried about human consumption of lead.

Go look at his position on abortion….

    http://www.californiaprolife.org/news/california-state-assembly-candidates/

    look for district 63….

So when it’s for him taking away your rights, he worried about developing human fetuses. The rest of the time, he’s for protecting women’s right to murder humans in the womb.

    Go figure……

  4. “There is no safe level of lead for human consumption,” said state Assemblyman Anthony Rendon

I’d like to see some scientific proof before I hitch my float to that parade. I don’t think Rendon knows what he’s talking about. I think that lead consumed in 230 grain increments by any moonbat in office is perfectly safe, and I’m willing to do my part in any and all testing to prove it. I’ll give the moonbats a running start.

Banning lead bullets is only one of the truly stupid laws coming out of Sacramento. Moonbat gun control crap that’s actually coming up for a vote is guaranteed to make felons out of every single gun owner in California, and there’s more than just idle talk of the authorities conducting house to house searches and confiscating any illegal firearms and ammunition they find, and that includes firearms stored illegally.

  5. It’s not like it was a young condor! 😉 Bald eagles have been killed by wind farms – are they gonna ban those too?

  6. LL- Don’t disagree, but I just think that Kalifornia is DETERMINED one way or the other to outlaw guns (and enforce it for LEGAL owners), knowing that criminals won’t obey any gun laws… And this approach is just one more excuse/method…

    Agirl- Thank you

    Ed- AND the kids… sigh

Rev- And fruits and flakes… don’t forget them!!!

Barlow- EXCELLENT follow up, thank you!

Mad Jack- Agreed! And they ARE over the top out there!

MrsC- Actually in California they are trying to get the windfarms shut down to save the birds!!!

    WSF- Yep! Look at Colorado!

    Fuzzy- True!
