Calving glacier…

You always hear about the ‘glacier’ tours and it’s a favorite of the cruise ships that go up the inside passage in Alaska…

Don’t know that I’d have wanted to be on a ship watching this one…

Of course they had to get the obligatory cheap shot in at the end about ‘globull warming’…

And for some reason my embedding quit working, so you’ll have to select the link manually… Sorry!

Calving glacier… — 11 Comments

  1. I thought that all of the glaciers on the planet melted as part of global warming.

  2. Yikes. I’m scheduled to get up close and personal with a couple of glaciers this summer.

  3. Opus – they may all be melted by the time you arrive. Then you’d be forced to ‘walk on water’, but we know that only Progressives can do that.

  4. LL- Supposedly, IF you believe the lefties…

Opus- BE CAREFUL! They don’t care if you’re there or not, they will do what they want! And they are bigger than most ships!

WSF- Lubrication in the form of water infused mud…

    LL- LOL… 🙂

  5. Then there’s this little “inconvenient truth”: glaciers only calve when they’re advancing. When they melt, they retreat.

  6. From something I have read, this happens many times with glaciers. This just happen to be a time when someone had a camera. The Inuits tell tells of such things in their historical stories. But it had to be awesome to see in person.

  7. I watch this awesome process with the sound off.
I did not want to hear the BS and yak on my recently cleaned carpets

  8. Rev- There IS that point, which seems to be ignored…

CP- Personally, I think it would be scary, especially if I was down at sea level… The waves must be pretty big!

    Rick- Better idea!!! 🙂

  9. Not as big as you’d think, NFO. We had some surfers come in who wanted to surf the waves off calving glaciers – but unlike the pronounced curl of a wave heading in to a beach, the waves coming off a glacier heading into a bay are just swells. So it was, other than bragging rights, really underwhelming.

Note we have an entire bay – Glacier Bay – that didn’t exist in the 1700’s when Captain Cook passed by, because the glacier was all the way up to the mouth of Icy Strait. The glacier is in retreat. Other glaciers are growing. Pretty fascinating, eh? If they ever can get unstuck from the magical cure-all of global warming, it’d be pretty awesome to find the real reason why some grow and others shrink.

  10. Wing- Understood, but “I” still wouldn’t want to be standing there… 🙂 And the lefties NEVER talk about the growing ones, only the shrinking ones!
