Bloggers being regulated…

It’s happening now in Singapore, but how long before it comes here???

From France 24 website-

The group had also organised an “Internet blackout” on Thursday, where over 130 bloggers in the city-state replaced their homepages with black screens featuring the words “#FreeMyInternet”.

Under the rules, websites with at least 50,000 unique visitors from Singapore every month that publish at least one local news article per week over a period of two months must obtain an annual licence.

Websites granted a licence will have to remove “prohibited content” such as articles that undermine “racial or religious harmony” within 24 hours of being notified by Singapore’s media regulator, the Media Development Authority (MDA).

Knowing Singapore and how strict their laws are, I can believe they will try this. Their level of success?  I’m not sure…  I “think” this is based on the Chinese ‘model’ of restrictions and some things going on in the Middle East. Singapore is the first ‘free’ country to try this; BUT, if the bloggers kow tow to the government, I can see this spreading.

Could it come here???  I don’t think so without some MAJOR controls on the Net, but with this administration, who ‘effing knows…

  1. The heart of the matter here is that every time the “tin foil conspiracy theorists” start talking, it’s been turning out to be true. And that is most disconcerting.

  2. The only freedoms we will be able to keep are the ones we are willing to fight for. Such is reality in a harsh world.

  3. Could it come here?

I’d say it’s here. They just haven’t acted on it yet.

With Lindsay Graham’s recent comments…. you better look out.

“Who is a journalist is a question we need to ask ourselves,” he said. “Is any blogger out there saying anything—do they deserve First Amendment protection? These are the issues of our times.”

He later walked that back, but as we all know people usually speak what’s on their mind.

The fact that he is even “pondering” the issue is chilling.

That cat is out of the bag.

  4. LL- That it is…

    Rev- Hopefully AFTER I’m gone…

    Opus- TRUE!!!

Matt- True, and Graham is pretty conservative…

  5. I can see it happening here. As far as the democraps are concerned, “dissent is patriotic” only if there is a republican in the white house. Now we have the Chicagomessiah in the white house, “free speech” has to be regulated. “Can’t have the unwashed masses stirred up from their doses of Entertainment tonight, they might get upset. Since we liberals know what is best for you.” I can see it coming here soon unless it is checked.
