We have the surfer bums…

largestwave

These idjits chase the big waves around the world trying (and sometimes dying) to surf them… Β I’ve often wondered how they pay for all the travel etc. since NONE of them apparently have a real job…

Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle may have set the world record for the largest wave ever surfed after riding an estimated 100-foot wave off the coast of Portugal.

Full story HERE.

Back in the 70s I lived a mile South of Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, which gets record waves every January in Waimea Bay; often 50 feet or better…

On more that one occasion we had to pull bodies out of the surf there after they either hit the rocks on the left side of the Bay, or broke necks/backs falling in the waves, or getting hit in the heads by their surfboards (they used 9-12 foot boards in the big stuff). Β Most of them were bums, and a couple of times we actually found surfers asleep on our Lanai!!!

All I gotta say is they have more Balls (or Ovaries, yes there is a female of the species too) that brains, and what few brain cells they have left they are probably smoking those away…

And I still wonder who pays for them to travel…

  1. Maybe sponsors? Or parents who think the kids are away at college?

  2. Re: how they pay for the travel, we have ski bums here who work four and five part-time jobs (waiting tables, serving coffee, etc) during the summers, so they can take the winters off to go skiing. I suspect the surfers are doing the same thing.

  3. I have trouble standing up in the shower, much less on a surfboard. I did try it once in the 60’s when we were in Pearl. I was much better at girl watching on the beach.

  4. We have Nauset Beach (National Seashore) up this way… lots of surfers in the summertime. Just job security for me. πŸ™‚

  5. I used to go to Waimea Bay and most of the time it was as flat as a lake. But once I went by when some 40 footers were rolling in. Even standing on the bluffs it scared the crap out of me.

Another funny story is that we had a physics teacher at Radofrd HS that was an avid surfer. We would check the surf report in the winter and if the waves were over 10 feet on the North Shore, we could be sure that he would be absent.

  6. A lot of them are ‘trust fund children’ whose parents pay them to go somewhere other than where the parents are.

  7. PH- I dunno, would YOU sponsor somebody like this? I know ‘I’ wouldn’t…

Rev- Could be. I’ve never actually asked them.

Mark- ARRRGGGHHH… I KNEW somebody was going to pull that old chestnut out… πŸ™‚

WSF- So they are twice stupid? πŸ˜€

CP- I’m with you on that!

Alison- I guess that is a GOOD thing for you, right? πŸ™‚ And welcome back!

PE- Yeah, 10 months of the year, flat as a board, two months of O>M>G> surf…

LL- Hadn’t thought of ‘that’ either, but if it works for them…

  8. Hey, Busey had the only 6 shot Charter Arms bulldog in existence in that movie. Make it worth watching just to see that very rare pistol πŸ™‚

  9. They get their money same place many of the Occupy brats got theirs–over-indulgent or fed-up rich parents and trust funds. LL nailed it.
