Range Report…

Yep, the old guns still shoot…

Model 17s

Ten yards, Winchester white box in moon clips.  The 7 o’clock low was the first DA round out of the 1917 Army.  Heavy (12ish lbs) pull.  And the two 6 ring shots were SA on the same pistol.  Obviously I need to get more than a couple of rounds through it.  Switched to the 1917 NS, and it was all 10/9 ring.  Back to the 1917 Army, and got a better (if high) group with the second moon clip. In other words, they’re more accurate than I am… sigh

Due to the number of folks waiting with kids, I didn’t spend a lot of time today.  Jumped to the ‘new’ pistol, 1969 Trooper, again at 10 yards.

trooper mustang

I did pretty good with it, then got stupid and tried a couple of mags of head shots with the Mustang carry piece.  Sigh… NOT good!  Note to self- GO TO THE DAMN RANGE MORE!!!

Ruger

Finished up on targets with 50 rounds of .22 at 10 yards, kinda got my act back together… That one at 2 o’clock is what happens when one gets popped in the ear with a hot .45 case from the adjacent lane… sigh…

Gave up the lane and moved over to the steels for a bit, after loaning the .22 to a nice couple and their daughter.  Seems he’d packed everything BUT the .22 he meant to bring… (At least he had ammo!)

Ran about five runs through the steels, shot one clean with the Trooper, and five of six twice (one each with the NS and the Army).  Picked up/cleaned up and cleared as more folks were waiting.  The guy really liked the .22, said it was ‘much’ smoother than his, so I clued him in on Volquartsen triggers… Open-mouthed smile

I think he’s going to be ordering one…  FCC FTC- I paid for my own trigger and it’s installation, thank you very much…

And talk about getting outshot by a gurl… sigh…  Pedi’s got her range report up HERE.

Range Report… — 13 Comments

  1. I pulled the 22 and ammo out and promptly drove to the range without it. Still shot 9mm and .380 so the day was not a waste.

  2. Shoot weekly, or shoot weakly.

I think you did great! My eyes are going, so switching to laser more. Damn that thing shakes at 30 feet.

  3. It’s the FTC that cares not the FCC. Of course neither should care, but that’s a rant for another day.

  4. It’s hard to have a bad day at the range, barring accidents, and yours sounds like a good one. Older Daughter & I are planning one for next weekend.

  5. Gerry- BTDT… sigh

    Danny- TRUE! dammit…

    Michael- Oops… And true too!

    Rev- Shoot em good!

Dammit- Meh, should have been a LOT better.

  6. Looks like a great day and no targets bear being ashamed of. We’ll have to get together to do more of that soon.

BTW, love those 1917s of yours. And if I recall, you’re the original owner of one of those, right? 😉

  7. My wife and I took both the Webley, and the Brazilian Smith to the range, (if it says 45ACP on the case do not put it in the Webley, the 45 Auto Rim reloads are safe for the Webley.)

We both tried double action on both pistols and we would NOT be posting any photos of the Webley groups. It seems that shooters must have been a lot stronger about one hundred years ago.

And yes, as always, we are overdue for a play date at the range. Retirement was supposed to free up time, but in some ways it has provided new and shiny ways to use up time.

The movie B-17 Memphis Belle was at Philly’s Northeast Airport this weekend, our house was pretty much below the landing flight path and we both got a lot of exercise bolting outside when we heard the rumble of really big round engines.

Monday morning we were out for shopping and swung by the airport on a whim. We watched the B-17 finish the engine warm up on the tarmac and then takeoff. Totally awesome.

    Take care.

    John

  8. Murph- Yeah, yeah… Actually Uncle was the original owner of the NS, he carried that as a cop in Louisiana…

John- Yeah, they DID have stronger hands! Damn trigger is like lifting weights one finger at a time! B-17s are always worth watching too!

  9. BZ for hitting the range, keep it up. I will be in the next couple of months coordinating loads of fill dirt to install my range at the lower part of my garden. Your more than welcome to stop by and blast away.

  10. Volquartsen sear makes a hell of a difference, too. Installation is not hard, there are videos on YouTube that show step-by-step. I did it on mine and nobody has ever called me “good with tools”.

  12. Senior- I’ll take you up on that sir! 🙂

CM- That they DO!!! 🙂 I cheated though, had my gunsmith do it and change the front sight at the same time…
