Hodads…

A San Diego (well actually Ocean Beach) institution, and a place that has always taken care of the military folks…

Got a chance to talk to Mr. Hardin’s grandson (who was working Saturday) and he said the van WILL ride again (well, maybe not this one, but one like it.  Too many years sitting this close to the ocean)… 🙂

And nothing much has changed inside, just more/newer license plates!  The older ones have been moved up to make room!  And some of the best burgers/fries/rings one could want!!!IMG_1783

And after lunch, taking a walk (ate WAY too much), we ran across this-  1965 Bimmer completely restored!IMG_1786

OH yeah,  and the reason I was over there was to meet Larry, who came down for lunch! 🙂  This is a 1949 Desoto Woody, one of 600 built, and the owner’s nine year labor of love to restore (and still going)…IMG_1787

Talking to the owner, he told us he’d driven it back to Ft. Wayne, IN this summer towing a travel trailer!!! Not bad for a 65 year old 6 Cyl, 127 hp, fluid drive car!!!

IMG_1788Larry and I commiserated on our respective travel trials and tribulations, and life in general… Good times!!!  Kinda sorta… 🙂

As always it was too short, but truly enjoy seeing Larry and comparing notes!

Oh yeah, and he was carrying a FULL sized revolver concealed, but that’s his story to tell…

  1. I learned to drive (Dad’s lap) in a Chrysler fluid drive. A pretty neat transmission! It only had two forward positions on the column, equal to the second & high gear positions, but there were two speeds in each position. My dad didn’t know about the lowest speed until he was pulling a heavy trailer up a steep hill on a gravel road. The car was slowing to a stop, not enough power, until suddenly as he pushed harder on the gas pedal it downshifted & started spinning & throwing gravel. He was tickled to death!

  2. Woody- I remember my grandfather (a mechanic) calling them a “slush box” among the more ‘polite’ things…

  3. I had was carrying a S&W 460 V, X frame revolver under the Molon Labe t-shirt. People always told me, “where are you going to carry that hog?” I carry it everywhere. Even the perceptive and weapons savvy Old NFO didn’t spot it.

Yes, I know it’s only 5 rounds of Hornady 460, 200 gr bullets leaving the muzzle at 2350 FPS (hand loads), with two speed loaders, but — if I hit the target in the belt buckle, it will push it (along with the bullet) out the back where the spine once was. Double-tap optional.

    • Old NFO and I ate really good burgers and solved ALL of the world’s problems in short order. (If only people would listen to us) It’s too bad that we are both working, because he had to get back to the beloved P-3’s and I had to pack for a 10 day road trip and get out of town. **IF** we were liberal pukes, not working, sipping lattes and so forth, we could have spent the whole day there bad-mouthing the Tea Party.

  4. Hey, Hey, Hey. I’m a member of the Tea Party. Don’t judge us all by a few. Most of us really want America back with smaller gubment and less taxes. Honest!

  5. Talking to the owner, he told us he’d driven it back to Ft. Wayne, IN this summer…

That’s a REALLY nice looking ride. That said, the owner has to have a masochistic streak to drive that sort of distance in the summer(!) without AC. Either that or I’m getting way too soft in my dotage.

  6. LL- Yep, THAT surprised me… And yeah, working sucks… WE need to figure out how to get on that gravy train…

    Rev- It does!

    CP- 🙂

    Skip- Yep!!!

Buck- Yeah, he was using 2×55 AC… 🙂

    Fargo- Yep, ‘interesting’ place!!!

  7. Looks like a great food place and interesting toys.
I could tell LL was pack’n,but only because I have a pic of him up over at my place…
Would have loved to listen to your discussions!

  8. WSF- AND he was playing period music… 🙂 Elvis!!!

    Keads- Yep it is!!!

Dammit- LOL, we’re actually pretty boring…

  9. OOOPS – that’s not a ‘bimmer’ – it’s a Beemer, bimmers have 4 wheels, Beemers two. As an ex aviator you should know the history of the blue and white logo…………..;-)
