Some things NEVER change…

The True Story
(By Colonel W C Hall, printed in the British Army Journal January 1953.)

Rome, II Calends, April CCCLX
SUBJECT: Recommendation for Senate Medal of Honor

TO: Department of War, Republic of Rome

  1. Recommend Caius Horatius, Captain of Foot, CMCMXIV, for the Senate Medal of Honor.
  2. Captain Horatius has served XVI years, all honorable.

III. On the II day of March, during the attack on the city by Lars Porsena of Clausium and his Tuscan Army of CMX men, Captain Horatius, with Sergeant Sporius Laritus and Corporal Julius Herminius, held the entire Tuscan army at the far end of the bridge, until the structure could be destroyed, thereby saving the city.

  1. Captain Horatius did valiantly fight and kill one Major Picus of Clausium in individual combat.
  2. The exemplary courage and the outstanding leadership of Captain Horatius are in the highest tradition of the Roman Army.

IInd Ind, G-III IX Calends, May CCC

TO: G-II

  1. For comment and forwarding.
  2. Change end of paragraph III from “saving the city” to “lessened the effectiveness of the enemy attack.” The Roman Army was well dispersed tactically; the reserve has not been committed. The phrase as written might be construed to cast aspersions on our fine army.

III. Change paragraph V from “outstanding leadership” to read “commendable initiative.” Captain Horatius’s command was II men, only I/IV of a squad.

J.D.
IIId Ind, G-II II Ides, June CCCLX

TO: G-I

  1. Omit strength of Tuscan forces in paragraph III. This information is classified.
  2. A report evaluated as B-II states that the officer was a Captain Picus of Tifernum. Recommend change to “an officer of the enemy forces.”

  1. Do not concur.
  2. Our currently fine relations with Tuscany would suffer and current delicate negotiations might be jeopardized if publicity were given to Captain Horatius’ actions at this time.

XII Ind, G-II VI November CCCLXI

A report rated D-IV, partially verified, states that Lars Porsena is very sensitive about the Horatius affair.

  1. Good God, and what does all THAT mean when you take it out of the box ?

  2. The moral to the story is that eagles may soar but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

  3. I wrote a guy up in my squad for the Bronze Star w/ V. Buy the time the Headquarters weenies got done, it was an Army Achievement w/V.

Next guy I wrote up, I wanted him to get the ARCOMM w/V. So I hounded the Troop Commander until he put him in for a Silver Star. By the time the paperwork got back, it had been downgraded to the previously desired ARCOMM w/ V.

I joke that my Troop Commander must have written me up for a DSC before I could get a BSM w/ V.

But the girl running the civil affairs shop came home with a MSM and a BSM.

And this is why I never wear my ribbons if I can get away with it.

The wreathed flintlock means so much more.

  4. BTDT indeed, and not just in the Navy. Any time the gummint is involved, the weasels come out to play. Sigh …

  5. Tim- Yep…

Ed- The Golsteyn case is one of more than a few… Sadly…

SPE- Yep, REMFs ALWAYS get medals…

    PAw- LOL, that works too!

    Rev- And the cowards…

    WSF- Oh HELL yes!

    NC- You are correct sir!

  6. Any time the government is involved in anything, it gets fubarred. Especially today with The Ayatollah Obama thinking he knows all there is to know whatever anyone is talking about or doing. But the one so-called President that really fubarred a war was LBJ, aided and abetted by Robert McNamara when they micro-micro-managed the VietNam war. It took a disgracd President (Nixon) to get us out of there by the skin of our asses. Look for the same sort of fuck-up with The Ayatollah patting the ISIS butchers on their collective heads and offering them foreign aid, jobs with all the benefits, as he is doing with the illegal aliens every day.

Don’t laugh. It will happen – and very soon. Remember, this asshole has a pen and a phone and is not afraid to use them to our detriment.

  7. Fargo- Yep, true today… sigh…

Scottie- OH yeah, lived through that mess.

BP- Always is… Dammit Untold numbers of REMFs got ‘significant’ awards without ever leaving the comfort of their offices… Slip one more piece of paper in a stack, it’ll get signed…

    • Speaking of REMFs, the “administration” (read ‘dictatorial regime”) our country is saddled with today (and there’s a whole bunch of burrs under that saddle), the entire goddam regime is just one big REMF, from The Ayatollah Obama on down through Shyster Corporal Holder, SecState John Kerry-Heinz (or is it Heinz-Kerry?), and nearly all the Dimocrat side of both the Senate and the House of Non-Representatives. And Kerry-Heinz (Heinz-Kerry?), Shyster Corporal Holder, and The Ayatollah are all MFs, with or without the Rear Echelon part.

  8. Kinda reminds me of when I was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama as an air traffic controller in the 70’s. Working at one of the airfields we had a tornado rip through the area. I talked 3 student aviators down during the melee. I guided one OH-6 down between two chicken barns at a chicken farm down the road because the light from the fiberglass roofs could be seen by the pilots.

As a reward I received a letter of reprimand for killing 2500 chickens and not evacuating the tower when the winds exceeded 60 MPH (The anemometer indicated 99 before it was blown off the tower).
