From the unintended consequences file…

My post on Wednesday generated quite a few comments online, and a few emails…

These two items are rather interesting…

First, in the delicious irony category…

For Latinos, who make up 38 percent of the state’s population, the landscape and lawn care is an important source of employment. More than 73 percent of workers in the landscape industry in California are Hispanic, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce using American Community Service Data 2005-2009. Many say the shift from luscious green lawns to cactus, mulch and rocks is crippling their industry.

And most of them are illegals… Oops…

Link to the foxnews.com article HERE.

And secondly, a link to a Foxnews.com video HERE about the activists wanting to shut down the bottled water industry in Kali… LOL

In other news, slogging back to the house today, but I’d MUCH rather be doing this kind of flying!!!

From the unintended consequences file… — 12 Comments

  1. Ah, the ebbs and flows of nature. When water is restored to the ground, people will want their lawns and landscaping back and work will be there again. Just like any industry. The unfortunate thing for that industry is there is no global aspect to it that can smooth out bumps in the road. It is all local.

Of course, all this hinges on the loons in California not outlawing lawns in the meantime. I’d like to see them start with golf courses. Let’s see them take that one on.

  2. The “little people” will be forbidden to have a nice yard, but the golf courses will get all the water they want.

    Welcome to Kaliforniastan!

  3. Lawn mowing and general yard care was my major source of income as a teenager. Mexicans tried to move in, and beat me up when they couldn’t undercut me. My father then got involved, and while six Mexicans will stomp a large teenager, they didn’t do well against his 5th Fleet heavyweight boxing champion father. I mowed lawns until I got out of high school and went to Basic. Even then, the cactus yards were showing up in Arizona, my neighborhood is about 50/50 now.

  4. Unintended consequences or just plain stupid? Late 90’s Suzuki had an ugly vehicle called the X-90. Some outfit bought three from us, put this large Red Bull can on the back, and had comely young ladies drive them around and distribute free cans of Red Bull. With my typical foresight, I snorted up my nose and declared, “That will never work for long”.

  5. Aguila/Rev/drjim- IF only… And we know they won’t touch the golf courses… Look at Palm Springs!

Tweell- Yep, I did the same thing, until I went to work for a veterinarian… I did see some homes in San Diego where they were yanking out the grass and putting in rocks/cactus.

WSF- LOL, those damn things are STILL around! 🙂

  6. Kewl pic. I have no words for the stats. They are what they are and speak volumes for demographic factors. As for Kali? Oiks. LOL

  7. Wonder how many American black youth would have decent landscaping, construction or food service jobs today if the illegals weren’t here doing those jobs cheaper under the table? That’s something that both Clinton and Obama should be held to answer for, but of course neither of them ever will.

As for the plane video, how can you not love an airshow that has both a Corsair and an O-2 Skymaster in it? Only thing cooler would by the O-2 FAC’ing for the Corsair as it dumps ordnance on some deserving America-haters.

  8. I was in grade school in the mid-sixties in the California gold rush country. I remember hearing that there were several proposed water projects on the books then. One of them was a dam that when full would have covered the lower part of our property, and hit our house right about the top of the first story. Not that I was enthused about it at the time, but as you might guess, the area is still high and dry.

Here is one of my favorite air show videos—
