TBT…

My old crew, back in the day… Circa 1985ish… One crew, one airplane, one ‘small’ maintenance det…

Vp-24 crew

Way up North… 🙂

Ironically, got to talking to one of my co-workers, turns out he was on a sub ‘playing’ with the same thing we were…

SMALL @#%^$ world!!!

Some of the most professional people I’ve ever worked with… And we done good, as they say…

  1. Interested to know if he related as to how many flares or broaches were required each exercise? And do you know which boat he rode?

  2. Nice use of the Wayback Machine. I leave it to you to decide whether my farther-north location is better than the one where your pic was taken. But good-lookin’ bunch of aviators ya got there.

  3. Glenn- He was on SILVERSIDES, and we were real world. No exercise…

Rev- Ours involved reindeer, just sayin… 😀

    • NOW I get the jist. There’s playing, and then there’s PLAYING. My last boat had some pleasurable diversions along those lines. Sorry I was slow on the uptake and too quick with the smart ass.

  4. …laying enough sonobuoys in the Bering Strait to allow the US Army to march from Alaska into Siberia without getting their feet wet.

  5. I tell the story frequently, but will repeat it here:
My Dad was an ARMY Veteran of the Pacific Theater and a Purple Heart recipient.
My Uncle was on the West Virginia as it sank in Pearl Harbor, and walked hand-over-hand to the Tennessee as the WV settled on the bottom.
My Uncle, (a conscientious objector/medic) was on a 101st Airborne Glider as it crash-landed in Normandy. He broke his ankle and was abandoned by his mates and spent the rest of the war starving in a P.O.W. camp.
These men were around the Sunday dinner table when I grew up.
Navy… you and I were PRIVILEGED to be associated with similar men, doing a dangerous job we accepted because we knew IT NEEDED DOIN’.
I’m just glad there is a core youth still willing to accept the yoke. There IS hope for us yet!

  6. I don’t see any one in that picture that looks like the picture on the back of your books. Still a good looking group.

  7. Eye patches, headscarves, and cutlasses would not look out of place with that crew.

  8. Glenn- No problem! 🙂

    gfa- Thanks!

    LL- We tried… sigh

GB- Great story, and I’m always humbled by those men. I just hope the next generations continue to step up, and they take back America!

WSF- Not admitting a damn thing. What happened on the road STAYS on the road… 😀

Ed- Kneeling first row left side

Stretch- We had those too… I have that picture somewhere or the other…

  9. I recognized two folks on your crew. John Miltenberger and Kenny Howell. John and I went through A/C school, A-School and VP-30 Rag. I ended up in VP-8 and All three of us ended up in 30 as acoustic instructors in 87-90. Life was good on BT crews!

  10. Otis- Yep, Milty is now a retired LCDR, but I lost touch with Kenny after he retired. I ‘think’ he’s still around Jax.
