More military stuff…

I had told somebody about how big Hangar 1 at Moffett Field was, and they used to fly hot air balloons in the hangar during the airshows…

Of course the ‘individual’ called BS… Well, here’s the proof!

Flying hot air balloons in HGR 1

This is from 1989, I think…

  1. So it was the hangar that was full of hot air this time? 🙂

  2. The blimp hangers at Tustin, CA are still there too. You must stand next to them or inside of them to appreciate them.

When the base was closed, bulldozed and repurposed as a shopping mall, the developer kept the hangers.

  3. Cool! Pop had a model of the USS Macon. Such a cool piece of technology.

  4. All be darned. Your ride isn’t too exciting but I bet the view is kind of fun.

  5. HangAr.
    It’s a pet peeve.

I think there is, (or was) another of these at Santa Ana, CA.
Interesting to look at history and see how much hope and money there was devoted to lighter-than-air, and how quickly things changed when reality set in.
I still shake my head when I see big money being spent on this technology. Wind and unforeseen weather will ALWAYS be an Achilles heel, won’t it?

  6. The P3-C pilots on Adak used to tell me about the hangars, and then I later saw them on the ‘net.

Cool. Thanks for the personal touch. 🙂

  7. In 1975 I toured Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy at the time, I think), and one of the stops on the tour was the Vehicle Assembly Building, where they mated the booster and the payload. The booster entered the building vertically, so this is an immensely tall, essentially hollow building, and clouds would form near the ceiling and rain would fall inside the building. Pretty cool.
I’ll see your balloons and raise you an indoor weather pattern.

  8. I was told about those hangers from some AT’s that worked on the P-3. They said there would be clouds, fog and rain inside the hanger during certain types of weather on the out side.
Now that means VERY BIG on the inside. Sort of opposite of the Tardas.
BTY, Frack the libturds in America.
Merry Christmass everyone and hopefully a Happy New Year and beyond.

  9. 6Shots- 😛 LOL

    Suz- The kids loved it!

LL- I’m amazed they kept them!

SPE- Macon ‘barely’ fit in that hangar…LOL

    Fargo- Yep!

GB- Yep, bottom line, mother nature WILL win!

    Rev- Thanks!

Old1811- Hangar 1 had the same thing. Until the VAB was built, Hangar 1 was the largest freestanding structure in the world!

NC- Yep, damn shame. But it had so much asbestos in it they had no choice. Of course the whole damn base is a Superfund site thanks to NASA…

Heltau- All true! And Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  10. Thats cool! I will have to show my boys this one

  11. I got the tour of that hanger when my daughter was stationed at Moffett NAS. Hard to realize how big it was, unless you saw it! Thanks for the great pic, forwarding to my girl.

  12. It is big! I lived on Moffett as a kid from ’75-’77. Hangar 1 is 12.48 acres!

  13. JUGM-LOL, please do!

    Dammit- You’re welcome!

SA- Yep, especially when you had the firewatch!!!
