Rio Olympics…

I don’t know how many folks are watching the Olympics, but the performances are amazing… Not just the Americans, but all the athletes. Some of the performances are frankly stunning…

To win by 8.209 points at the Olympics is just… WOW! 🙂 And over the Russians no less!

Michael Phelps is now up to 21 gold medals!!! What can you say, other than simply amazing!

The other thing I would point out is that even those who have little to no chance of winning ARE NOT giving up. They continue to do the best they can, not only to represent their respective countries, but also themselves.

Having said this, I think NBC’s coverage SUCKS! They have way too many commercials, and they shove all the ‘good’ event replays into the last four hours of the night and don’t actually give you a schedule of what will show when, forcing you to sit through things you don’t necessarily want to watch, just to get to the ones you DO want to see.

And the fact that shooting is receiving little to no media coverage, although apparently ‘some’ of the air rifle was shown, around 0900 in the morning. Apparently if you want to watch shooting, especially Kim Rhode, you have to get streaming media to see it…

OH yeah, and Costas sucks too… Yapping like a little dog, talking over the experts, and ‘pontificating’… Sigh…

Anyhoo, go watch the athletes and enjoy people performing at the top of their games in their respective sports! It only happens every four years!

Rio Olympics… — 20 Comments

  1. Using Dish I get 14 different choices or channels to watch and they actually show you a schedule.

  2. I have watched it here and there, and my take-aways are the same as yours. The mainstream media will stay politically correct, which means no matter how well we did at shooting, they wouldn’t cover it.

  3. I stopped watching when Nobody But Clinton got the media rights. Costas is a whinny bitch. (I’ve never called a ale a bitch before but Costas deserves it.)

I swam and played water polo in HS and college. I knew several of the Olympic swimmers over the years and I knew all the water polo team members for about 20 years. The coach too. I will tell you that the Olympic athlete is like nothing else. It is like they are super human. It must b that right combination of genetics, positive attitude, and conditioning.

One women swimmer from my club qualified. She was blazingly fast. But in the Olympics she came in last. So far back she was almost lapped in the longer events. But no matter how they perform they can forever say they competed in the Olympics and hold their heads high (if they have done their best).

Lastly, I hope my meaning is not misunderstood. Individual events are unlike team events. Sure, the individual has a team of coaches, trainers, etc. But the individual is on their own in competition. Whereas, a team can allow for some slacking of individuals. Yes, of every Olympic water polo team I knew there were some individuals who slacked off. Some because they thought they were hot stuff (and didn’t have to go all out all the time), others because they sloughed off onto the team knowing the team would tack up the slack. Yet, while that does occur at the Olympic level, those guys are still so far above everyone else.

  4. yes, I watch ‘some’ of the events. But just as you say, the coverage they choose to show and when kills my interest. So I have spent more time watching the Little league WS southwest regional. Those kids can play some ball, and the innocence of why they compete is tops.

  5. The Olympics haven’t been worth watching since Jim McKay.
And I shudder to think how bob costas would have covered this:

  6. Hopefully the golf coverage on golf channel will be better. Who the hell was Costas’s sponsor, I can’t stand the little antigunner.

  7. Olympic’s? Are they happening? Oh Well! I worked the Atlanta Olympics as a greeter at the ATL airport. If two countries came in at the same time, the animosity and hatred between them was evident. All this love of competition is bull.. or partly bull. They still hate each other. So I don’t give them the time of day.

  8. I managed to catch 2 days of Female Archery… Damn that is impressive. 70+ yards away to put arrows on a donut-sized target? And some getting them things in the donut hole?

    Also, Don’t miss Women’s Rugby.

  9. All- Thanks for the comments, and no, it hasn’t been the same since Bob McKay.

    Posted from my iPhone.

  10. Check the USA network, in the mornings. They have some of the weirder stuff, like equestrian and such.

NBC has some stuff during the day that isn’t over-Costa’d.

  11. Costas does not come into Texas. There is a “bounty” on him,,,,I hear.

  12. I stayed up late last night to watch the ladies gymnastics and I agree, they were near perfection and to beat all the countries that dominated the sport for so many years, it was amazing. Phelps is super human.

  13. I watch only because my wife watches.
The promote this world unity yet there is nothing but silence when the Lebanese athletes refuse with the Israelis and The IOC is silent.
Imagine the Hell that would be raised if White American athletes would have refused to ride with the black American athlets or blacks from any other nation.

  14. During the Men’s Double Trap finals the announcer said the Manx competitor came from “an island in the English Channel.”
This level of stupid should hurt.

  15. The womens’ 10K today was absolutely astonishing. The time was of course a record by a bunch, but to do it so commandingly was something else to watch (when they weren’t tuned to something else). As a track and field official I don’t get excited about race walking or long distance races, preferring the “more action” of shorter race or field events, but that 10K was worth following.

If NBC gets the rights next time around I may seriously consider changing from cable to satellite for the duration. Disgusting.

  16. Kim Rhodes is on track to become the first person in history to medal in SIX consecutive Olympics. But because she is a shooter (trap and skeet) all we hear from the media is crickets.

I agree with Stretcch, the Olympic coverage was better, and more entertaining, when Jim Mckay was doing it. At least he wasn’t embarrassed to be an American!
