  1. My retirement object of lust is a ’73 Corvette, arctic white, 454 big block, four-speed transmission, t-tops.

Just like I wrote about in False Gods.

My wife says I may die unfulfilled.

  2. I was commander of Flight One. Flight Two’s CO was headed back to VN. He owned a 427/435 Vette. When I expressed an interest in buying the car he said, “It gets 9 mpg, less when you’re playing.”
Even though premium fuel was like $.40/gallon, I backed away.
I wish I had bought that car, even though I know I would not have kept it long.
(Another buddy with orders to go back had a ’56 T-Bird…
    Same story.)

  3. In the late ’60s the older brother of a buddy had a ’67 Vette including the hardtop. My buddy ended up with the Vette manifold and the six pack and put them on his otherwise mundane Chevy sedan when his brother changed to dual quads. I wonder where that Vette is today?

  4. Sigh…the only reason I regret not being more, ummm, wealthy is because I’ll never own a classic vet. 🙂

  5. Don’t know what personal deficiency causes it but I’ve never had a desire to own a Corvette.

Being in the retail auto business for many years have driven several, enjoyed them, but never “lusted” for one.

On the other hand, a 1979 Ranchero GT with a 400 c.u. V-8 stirred my neither regions.

  6. My first Corvette was a 1967 coupe, 327/350HP, 4-speed, Marina blue with black interior, 3.36 posi rear end. Really nice car.

STOLEN right out of my driveway!

Corvette #2 was purchased from the older brother of one of my hot rod buddies.

1969 T-Top, 427/390HP, 4-speed, 3.36 posi rear end, dark green with tan/saddle interior, and factory side exhaust.

The ’69 was a nice car, but my ’67 still comes back to haunt me…..

  7. All- Thanks, and it’s a bucket car for me… WSF, you’re just weird… LOL

    Posted from my iPhone.

  8. I have never wanted to own a corvette, they just dont move me.

Now a 427 AC Cobra, oh yeah that gets me moving.

A Ranchero with say 400M with Cleveland heads, and a turbo or two, yeah that will russel my jimmies.

  9. Dagamore- I actually like the 289 Cobra better, it’ll actually handle rather than oversteering like a big dog… LOL And Rancheros and Elkys are definitely collectible!!!

  10. For those that may not have heard my “truth” before:
We bought a Taurus SHO two years ago.
It will park itself. You can hold a conversation with normal voices at 75 mph. It has all-wheel-drive and 363 horsepower.
…Other bells and whistles too numerable to mention.

    The classics warm our hearts.
    There’s a ’70 Corvette 454/390 parked next to the SHO… a beautiful car.
Our SHO would blow our ‘Vette, and all the cars pictured above, into the weeds while getting 26 mpg on the highway.
Remind me… when are “the good old days”?

  11. Ed- WOW!!!

GB- You DO have a point, but I’m going to guarantee that 70 Vette turns more heads that the new SHO…LOL

  12. Greybeard,

The Taurus SHO may have some mechanical performance to it, but looks-wise, it is the equivalent of a 1972 Buick LeSabre. I never saw scantily-clad nubile young women in bikinis and halter tops flock around a guy who pulled up to the snowcone stand in his ’72 LeSabre and all squeal stuff like, “I’d do ANYTHING for a ride in your LeSabre!”

Conversely, when I got older I never let our youngest daughter date any dude who drove a two-door sports car. I preferred that she dated guys who drove LeSabres. Oh, and I hid all her bikinis, too.

The Chevrolet Corvette is the sexiest car ever designed and made in the history of America.
