TBT…

9 years ago this week, I was out ‘playing’ at working in Hawaii…

Or at least that was what I was accused of…

The only problem was, I’d been here the week before… Bonus points if you recognize this place…

Anyhoo…

I was bored. And being jet lagged by 13 hours, staying awake in the hot sun becomes a slight ‘issue’… And you can only sit and watch helos take off and land for so long, and swat so many bugs…

I’m in the one on the right, in the LEFT seat (in other words, I wasn’t driving) and was being cussed by the gent in the red shirt… LOL

One does see some ‘strange’ things when you’re out over the waters off Hawaii…

This was not only strange, it was ‘stupid’…

That was an idjit on a jet ski, quite a few miles out of Honolulu, and yes, that is a submarine on the left side of the picture.

When the scope turned and ‘looked’ at the jet ski, I think it scared the driver, because he turned around and hauled ass… We called it in, but I’m not sure what ever happened to him.

Answer to the pic at the top below the break-

For those that said Bahrain, you were exactly correct…. Crowne Plaza in the diplomatic area. And they DID have camel burgers on the menu. However, having had that ‘pleasure’ back in the early 90s, we chose NOT to indulge…

  1. My wife and I were driving across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel some years ago and were lucky to see a sub on the surface. This was long before the days of cell phone cameras, but after the Navy stopped painting the hull numbers on the sail.
It was very cool to see.
Having met a few bubbleheads in my day, I would suggest that after hearing them talk incessantly about how wonderful they are, I never could think of them as the Silent Service again.

  2. I said Bahrain off the bat. never been there of course but I recognize the architecture.
When we were stationed up in Groton years ago, it was also fun to watch the subs come in and out. Sometimes you could cross the gold star highway bridge and see them going under you…very cool. But in no way would I want to be on a jet ski with one so close.

  3. I’ll take Hawaii, and leave Bahrain to others, thanks. Regarding LL’s comments about SEALs, above: I was talking to a retired Ranger and Green Beret some time back. The Green Beret said, “You were in the Navy … why do SEALs chatter like those wind-up teeth when they get out?”

I had no answers for him.

  4. All- Thanks… And it’s pretty bad when half your readers ‘know’ places like this…

  5. Hey Old NFO;

I wanted to get a job in the middle east after Desert Storm, I had found the area quite mysterious after my time there, It was totally different from the States or Europe. Now I have a different outlook I suppose.
