The nose is under the tent…

From Gizmodo…

Bold/Italic mine.

In the hopes of deterring violence, schools are turning to big data analytics to examine social media posts for the earliest signs of violence—depression, resentment, and isolation. Shawsheen Valley Technical High School in Massachusetts has turned to Social Sentinel, a data analytics company that says it can use the type of threat detection police agencies use to identify students at risk. But experts worry student social media mining, even with the best intentions, is a slippery slope to treating students the way we treat suspects.

Are ‘we’ next? If you’re a 2A proponent, or a collector, or curio and relic person, or a military history buff, what are the odds that we wouldn’t trip their threat detector? And I find this quote rather interesting…

“We are not a surveillance tool; we are not a monitoring tool; we’re not an investigative tool,” Margulis said.

Full article, HERE.

Looks to me like they ARE both a surveillance and monitoring tool! They claim 450,000 ‘threat indicators’, and approved ‘access’ to over 1 billion social posts a day. If they’re not ‘surveilling and monitoring’ those posts, what ARE they doing with them???

Website, HERE.

After the debacle with Cambridge Analytics, this is enough to make one wonder…

From reader Charles- Some good points…

I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.
Robert A. Heinlein

The more laws, the less justice.
Marcus Tullius Cicero

An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.
Robert A. Heinlein

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.

  1. Why does the Left hate the children? Why does the Left hate civil rights? It’s time we fight lawfare with lawfare.

    42 U.S. Code § 1985 – Conspiracy to interfere with civil rights
    (3) Depriving persons of rights or privileges
If two or more persons in any State or Territory conspire or go in disguise on the highway or on the premises of another, for the purpose of depriving, either directly or indirectly, any person or class of persons of the equal protection of the laws, or of equal privileges and immunities under the laws; or for the purpose of preventing or hindering the constituted authorities of any State or Territory from giving or securing to all persons within such State or Territory the equal protection of the laws; or if two or more persons conspire to prevent by force, intimidation, or threat, any citizen who is lawfully entitled to vote, from giving his support or advocacy in a legal manner, toward or in favor of the election of any lawfully qualified person as an elector for President or Vice President, or as a Member of Congress of the United States; or to injure any citizen in person or property on account of such support or advocacy; in any case of conspiracy set forth in this section, if one or more persons engaged therein do, or cause to be done, any act in furtherance of the object of such conspiracy, whereby another is injured in his person or property, or deprived of having and exercising any right or privilege of a citizen of the United States, the party so injured or deprived may have an action for the recovery of damages occasioned by such injury or deprivation, against any one or more of the conspirators.

  2. 18 U.S. Code § 242 – Deprivation of rights under color of law

Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or to different punishments, pains, or penalties, on account of such person being an alien, or by reason of his color, or race, than are prescribed for the punishment of citizens, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death.

  3. Heinlein may be the best guide for civic conduct in these times. I know a number of persons up here who will no longer obey any Federal laws. By their own declarations, they’ll try to follow State rules, but the hold the Federal gov’t in contempt at all levels. They alone are morally responsible for their conduct, of course.

  4. “Never give your real name.” comes to mind. I wonder how many ‘innocent’ and utterly dry and useless accounts will blossom – and die.

  5. You know, in a certain respect we’ve been asking them to do that every time there is a shooting by a nut-case. Complaining that the ‘authorities’ keep missing the warning signs. They have finally taken it to heart and are doing what everyone was suggesting that they do. Over the top, but you KNEW that was going to happen.

  6. Look- this is a political war.
They don’t give a damn about “the children” TM.
What they are doing is building a tool.
It is not WHAT they are building, but HOW they will use it.
The new laws will be aimed squarely at their political enemies. Their friends will be exempt. There is no such thing as equality under the law. Everyone a criminal, and selective enforcement, is the goal.

  7. Just another threat to be defended. No doubt this has quietly been going on for as long as the internet has existed. Just as certain, the many sheepdogs are staying vigilant.

  8. McChuck- Exactly, but as soon as you go back on them for this, they’ll scream “IT’s for the chilluns…” Sigh…

    Rev- Tis Alaska! 😀

Orvan- But remember how they ‘tried’ to kill all those accounts that were anonymous???

Craig- Agreed, and it’s going to ‘expand’ rather than decrease… dammit… I foresee them going after Blogs next.

    Raven- Exactly!!!

    WSF- Oh no doubt.

  9. No one would listen to the “folks” on the ground with first hand knowledge. We ask people to “say something if you see something” but it gets ignored. And now we are growing another “industry” to protect the children when it should be done locally. When will the stupidity stop. As if social media stuff can’t be made up or manipulated for planting false flags or simply to do character assassination. What a sick joke.

  10. Don’t forget the ‘list’ of potential ‘subversive markers’ that ‘big sis’ put out a few years ago, 70+ specific signs. I hit something over 40+ of them – IOW we are all already on their radar/lists. In reality, all we can do is be as law abiding as possible (don’t give them any excuse) and try to maintain vigilance. Am I being paranoid? Possibly, but then again when (not if) they come for me at least they gave me fair warning 🙁

  11. I’ve been a critic of Wikileaks, Manning and Snowden but even I have my limits.

That said, I think there are some differences here. Most of what those leakers had revealed was about what we’re doing internationally. (Their spying on Trump is another story that someone from the Obama admin needs to explain better.)

This is spying on Americans by local governments. Worse yet, the reason they’re doing it is solely because the schools were unwilling to deal with a kid who should have been arrested when he first went over the line.

The schools just need to do their jobs. Save Big Brother for another day.

    • IIRC, Snowden’s NSA leaks were a mixture of international espionage and domestic surveillance, though much of the latter merely confirmed long-standing suspicions. If he’d only leaked the latter, I’d consider him a hero. By leaking the former, I think he qualifies as a vile traitor.

  12. “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Benjamin Franklin Circa mid 1770’s

  13. “Depression, resentment and isolation “ Isn’t that every teenager these days? It is in my experience with daughters 18 & 15.

    • It varies from hour to hour, but pretty much yes.

      Signed,
      Speaker-at-Students

  14. My other thought is they can claim they are or not whatever, but they are still a tool.
