RIP Vito…

Vito crossed the Rainbow Bridge last night. The kids are devastated, and I’m not real happy either, but he’s no longer in pain. He had a good couple of days with the kids up at a cabin they had rented.

In a nutshell, that was Vito… He did the same thing with Kaya when she was born. A true gentle giant at 105 lbs of Rottie, he would have done anything for those kids, and put up with more than any poor dog deserved. RIP Vito, see ya on the other side.

RIP Vito… — 42 Comments

  1. I have always thought that our lives are much more enriched by the love and example of the dogs we invite in. No matter what kind of day it has been, they were always happy to welcome us home as well as protect and defend against not only chipmunks and squirrels, but also other, larger, less well-intentioned folks. At lest Vito is no longer in any pain.
My sincere condolences to you and your family on your loss.

  2. Jim,
My condolences on your loss. I had a Rottie (Bubba) that I raised from a pup. He was also a gentle giant to our family and a fearsome barrier to those who trespasses at our home. He developed cancer and I had to have him out to sleep. Hardest thing I’ve ever done. They really do become an important part of our lives. RIP Vito and Bubba.

  3. RIP Vito. Sad day but there are years of memories and pictures to remember him with. Y’all only had Vito for part of your lives but to Vito, you were his everything.
Stay safe and well, and comfort the kids.

  4. I believe that dogs are a gift. The Lord has Blessed us with His creation that Loves us truly. It does not matter what we look like, whether we are a King or a pauper. Whether everyone knows our name, or if we have no friends at all. Our dog Loves us completely and without reservation. He does not judge when we fall short, and when we hurt or at the end of our rope, he seems to know and understand and is willing to Love us all the more. I believe the Lord has Blessed us with this most wonderful creation to remind us daily of who He wants us to be. RIP Vito, run and join the Master until all of us can be together again.

  5. So sorry to hear to that Jim. We, as a society, don’t deserve dogs.

  6. Sorry to hear this Cajun. A dog truly is a gift from God.

Vito served you well, you’ll see him at the Bridge.

  7. May he never be without a ball to chase and a leg to slobber on.

    Good Dog!

  8. We’ll light a candle in the window tonight to give Vito guidance over the Rainbow Bridge.

  9. I have asked myself this question several times after losing a
    doggy friend
guess the answer is that they love us so much…So sorry to hear the news.

    The Power of the Dog

    Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
    From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
    Love unflinching that cannot lie—
    Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
    Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But . . . you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
    Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve.
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

  10. Bummer….really sorry to hear that.

Dogs are proof God loves us, and like SPEMack, I sometimes wonder if we’re deserving enough to have them.

  11. All – thank you for the kind words, I will pass them along to the kids.

    Posted from my iPhone.

  12. So sad. The rescue folks I work with lost a kitten last week, too. Much grief, because they give you everything. And the first person who says “It’s just a dog” or “It’s just a cat” needs to be smacked into tomorrow.

  13. As you know, I lost my beloved Rottie in June. And I still miss her, every day. That breed is a special breed, much maligned, so strong and devoted.

Sorry to hear Vito has passed. He will be there, protecting the children, in spirit for forever. And we are there for you and yours in your grief.

  14. There is a special kind of pain when losing our four legged kids. Hugs to the kids and a beer for you.

  15. Sorry to hear the bad news, Jim
Big or small they’re never here long enough.

  16. No amount of saying “I’m so sorry for your loss” will make up for the pain, we rescue them and each one always has a special place in our hearts, just like yours will. Remember the fun times and smile,Vito would want that.

  17. I’m so sorry–please send my condolences. The souls that burn brightest are taken from us soonest. He will keep watch at the Rainbow Bridge for his people and will guard them until they are together again.

  18. That sucks. I’m glad Vito has earned his rest and is free from pain and the cares of this world, but I’m sorry for the family’s loss.

  19. So sorry to hear of your loss. My condolences all. May he Rest In Peace.

  20. Dang, Jim….I am really sorry to hear that, Your prior posters said it much better than I could have. I remember someone saying that dogs don’t go to heaven and I venomately disagreed and used this statement. “If Heaven is perfect, than not allowing our furry friends to join us on the other side goes against the perfection that is heaven.” Again I am really sorry to hear that.

  21. Sir:
Though I do not know you, nor did I know your Vito, know that I empathize with you in your sorrow, which is the solemn privilege of those who were close to their pets, who were family and not merely kept as a tool or possession. It is something we were not meant to get used to.

  22. 🙁
I’m so sorry. I was hoping to have the opportunity to meet Vito one day. I felt like I knew from all your stories. I know he will always have a special place in everyone’s hearts.

  23. I’m very sorry to hear this. It sounds like Vito was cut from the same cloth as Byron’s well-loved Noufoundland, Bos’un”

“Near this spot rest the remains of one who possessed beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all of Man’s virtues with none of his vices.”

  24. Thank you all. I have no words to say how much Vito has meant to me and my family. He was so much more than just a dog, he was a protector and the best friend to Jace. My family is devestated. We will forever have his memory with us and he is now our angel watching over us.
