Not taking any chances…

Just to make sure to get the year off right, a southern tradition for supper…

Hoppin’ John, collard greens, cornbread, and ham. Luck and money… And I need both of them! 🙂

What’s your New Year’s go to meal???

  1. Leftover Pizza from the New Year’s Eve “feast.” And chocolate, don’t forget chocolate.

  2. Hey Old NFO;

Home cooked Greens, Black Eye peas, and ham. We didn’t do cornbread because both the wife and I are “under the weather” and we didn’t even have the “whoomp” cornbread in the house. Oh well.

  3. Uh-oh. Shoulda had some Hog Jowl rather than Ham. Don’t know if the magic works unless you got hog jowl.

  4. Wow, Old NFO – I just BBQ’d a hamburger. Now, I hang my head in shame in the corner.

  5. The Mrs. made Hoppin’ John and greens. We can’t get collards here up North, so we used mustard greens. We used a ham bone in the Hoppin’ John.

  6. I grew up with ham ‘n beans (white beans, of course) and corn bread for New Year’s Day. My wife hasn’t wanted to fix that for quite awhile now, so it’s whatever she’s in the mood for.

And I find that that improves my luck. 🙂

  7. I partook of $HOUSEMATE’s house-stinking-up black-eyed peas (Well, I know I can smell things…) but not long after midnight, the FIRST food eaten was pickled herring. Didn’t really have the chance for either last year and look what happened! So, being careful this year. Even if I did need to burn a stick of incense to rid the house of That Odor.

  8. Mixed greens, cornbread, ham, black eyed peas. Didn’t do it last year and will not make that mistake again!

  9. A traditional pot of backeyed peas done with smoked hocks, bacon, and spices, sided with cornbread, butter, and honey. Yumm. It’s nigh impossible to find collards here in the Northwest, so I had to settle for spinach.

    I apologize for 2020 – I forgot the good-luck beans last year.

  10. Seafood, for the past few years. This year it was scallops, prawns, and steak.

  11. Ham and baked beans with possum bread.

    possum bread –
    1 box Jiffy mix
    3 large eggs
    1 can cream corn
    1 cup shredded cheese
    bake @350 for 45 minutes

    • Bet that would make some good deep-fried ‘pone.
      I’ll be in the kitchen.

  12. Texas/Cowboy Caviar – black-eyed salsa. I can’t do black-eyed peas just cooked up as ham and beans. The green was the cilantro in it. Carrot cake for the sweet. Italian sausage and shrimp casserole for the pork.
