The more things change, the more they remain the same…

Got these from some old shipmates. In a way, bookends for my deployments PI in the early days, Sigonella was my last one.

A menu from back in the day in the PI. Frequented this place quite a bit as the food was ‘decent’…

Before you wonder about how expensive it was, the P was 40:1 back in the day… So a San Miguel beer was about 15 cents…

And then there was this sign…

I saw this posted in more than one AW shop and we had a framed version in the Tactics office.

And last, but not least, Mt. Etna blowing her top yet again. It was sometimes ‘exciting’ to come flying in at night when she was going off,

Mt. Etna was only 20nm from Sig, so it wasn’t unusual to get ash plumes coming down on the base. Occasionally we had to fly around the plume or land in the opposite direction to stay out of it.

Just for reference, Mt. Etna is probably the most active volcano in the world. Here’s hoping the folks over there are safe and both they and the locals are okay…

  1. That picture of Etna is impressive. But I think Pele would take issue about it being the most active volcano in the world – that honor goes to Kilauea on Hawaii, which has been erupting continuously for decades.

  2. Gather round kids, and let me tell you about what the world was like when I was a kid, before spell check.

    • That’s “SPLEE CZECH”. dammit!!!!
      That’s what I use as a Topic when I submit corrections…

  3. JMI- Just a ‘bit’!

Tom- Etna is usually erupting every day, just not THIS impressively… Either one is definitely in the top 1-3 in the world though!

    Hereso- LOL

  4. I don’t see baluts on the menu. Are you sure this restaurant was AUTHENTIC?

I’ve got a 1908 Peso that was recovered from the dumping of coins at the US Mint in Manila to keep it out of the hands of the invading Japanese. It’s 80% silver, and the size of a Morgan or Peace Dollar, so I guess the peso suffered some devaluation along the way.

  5. Pat- If you asked, they could get them…shiver… Yep, devaluation did happen over the years.

  6. I could swear I’ve had San Miguel before, but don’t remember where. Probably in SoCal….

  7. What a great menu!Tacos, Chili &AMERICAN FOOD. I want some of that good stuff, but it’s Lent so I have to hold off. Grrrr.

  8. LSP- It was ‘kinda’ American…

Jack- LOL, yes, I’ve seen that before. It’s probably happened more than once, but the analysts missed it.
