TBT…

Hard to believe this was thirty-eight years ago…

We were a damn good squadron, didn’t play the politics game, or get on TV, but we got the job done! 🙂

We were the ONLY Navy squadron ever to have a female on our squadron patch! Hehehe

  1. I’m proud of myself. I recognized that as a P3 Orion.

They’re still flying those as air tankers. I believe the guy that owns Buffalo Airlines from the TV show Ice Pilots is in the process of buying the fleet from Aero Union and plans to keep them flying.

  2. Hadn’t realized that about the unit patch – wow! I’ll bet she also made great nose or interior art.

Holy “Impetus for Bat-Guano Crazy Acts!”, or were those just normal line of duty? Probably the latter, at least that’s the rationale in patrol logs.

  3. Didn’t you make the transition from the P2V? 🙂

  4. Elmo- Interesting! I hadn’t heard that!

    PK- I’ll plead the fifth…LOL

Gerry- No, sadly decommissioned in 1995 during the big cutback.

Jet- LOL, no but I did go from A/B models to P-3Cs 🙂

    Ohio- Thanks!

  5. Now you’re making me question whether the eagle on VP-1’s patch or the shark on VP-6’s patch are male or female.

  6. WSF- It was a damn good squadron, top to bottom!

Fluge- ‘By direction’ they had to be male…LOL. And the same to you and yours!

  7. Hey Old NFO;

Very cool patch, and makes me wonder if your squadron was wacked because it wasn’t “politically correct”, especially with the Clinton Whitehouse running things……or am I thinking out loud..

  8. A good squadron is a great place. Spending time in a hangar…..where your shipmates in your sister squadrons look at you and think “man I’m glad I ain’t in that command.” is not the place to be.
Having spent 96 paychecks in a command where two Chief’s went UA? The value of even an average command became apparent.

    • I think the “Front Office” inhabitants do the most to determine whether a squadron is great, good, or bad. I have seen a squadron cycle through all three in a four year period.

      • Flugel, normally I’d agree. I saw one VF outfit at Miramar make an almost immediate bounce back after all the senior khakis (Both Ready Room and Goat Locker.) were sent packing.
In our case, nope. The command climate was immutable.

  9. Bob- LOL, no telling…

    Jet- Wow!

Flugel- Yeah, that does happen. Seen it a couple of times over my career.
