Huh…

It appears that GoFundMe has ‘determined’ that the nearly $10M dollars donated don’t meet their ‘TOS’…

Funny how they were fine with BLM donations, but now, not so much to a legitimate protest that hasn’t killed a single person or burnt a single building…

Conservatives have reacted with fury after GoFundMe canceled a fundraiser for Canadian truckers protesting against a COVID-19 vaccine mandate and said it would refund all contributions.

The fundraising effort had raised C$10 million—around $7.9 million—and C$1 million had already been distributed to the organizers of the so-called Freedom Convoy before GoFundMe took the decision to stop the fundraiser.

And another take-

Tesla CEO Elon Musk accused GoFundMe of hypocrisy after the company canceled the Freedom Convoy fundraiser on Friday after it actively supported a campaign for the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest in Seattle.

The crowdfunding platform claimed the convoy fundraiser – which raised $10million Canadian dollars ($8 million USD) in support of truckers protesting against COVID-19 vaccine mandates – violated its terms of service ‘which prohibits the promotion of violence and harassment.’

GoFundMe plans to distribute the remaining $9million of donated funds to ‘credible and established charities’ that were reportedly chosen by the convoy organizers and have been verified by the platform.

And yet another look from the Brits- This time the Globe and Mail (bold/italic mine)

The company said in the statement that it made its decision after hearing arguments this week from protest organizers and local police.

“Following a review of relevant facts and multiple discussions with local law enforcement and city officials, this fundraiser is now in violation of our terms of service,” GoFundMe’s statement said. It added that the protesters violated its clauses prohibiting “the promotion of violence and harassment.

Really makes me wonder if I want to donate to anything put up on GoFundMe, especially with them pushing for a ‘15% tip’ on the donation to them for ‘handling’ fees.

  1. Fifteen percent off the top is too much. I will not donate through them.

  2. No one should be surprised by Go F’Yourself’s actions.
They are who we thought they were.
I really hope some of the State AG’s continue with any criminal investigation into them.

  3. Hey Old NFO;

Well “GoFundMe” has always been kinda a leftie bent, and if it wasn’t for double standards, the left would have NO standards. Have to find other ways to support the truckers.

  4. Two quick thoughts…

After the outrage occasioned by their decision to give any money not requested to be refunded to their chosen charities, GFM has announced that they will refund everything donated, no requests needed. I wonder, though, how they’ll decide which donors don’t get their money back because they already paid out $1million. And I wonder how much of this change in their attitude was because their website got swamped with refund requests rather than because they saw the light.

Also, there’s a new/different platform, GiveSendGo, that has a campaign going for the truckers. They brand themselves as a Christian fundraising site, and while there are third-party processing fees, the site itself takes nothing from the donations. There’s already $2.5million pledged there for the Freedom Convoy. They’ve also hosted fundraisers for the legal fees of several of those involved in the events of 6 Jan.

  5. What’s funny is that originally they weren’t going to refund the money unless you went and asked. So a group of people who understand how this REALLY works told everyone to challenge the transaction at their bank. This costs GFM $26 (American) for EACH challenge. That’s on top of the money they have to pay back. GFM was suddenly looking at a loss in the millions, possibly tens of millions, if the majority of donations were only $5 or less.

THAT is the real reason that GFM suddenly changed course and decided to refund everyone’s money.

It’s like the whole bit with Binding Arbitration which all of the internet companies are suddenly running away from. Vox Day’s lawyers showed everyone how to weaponize it against the big corps.

So much of what these places do are flat out illegal, and if people want to, they can bring them to their knees with the simplest of tactics. It’s nice to see folks are finally doing it to these shysters.

  6. I liked the take elsewhere that the truckers are showing what real “power to the people” looks like. The left has advocated that for decades, but they are getting bitten in the ass by the fact it’s the wrong people in their mind that are showing the power, driving them crazy…
    Left: “Power to the People!!!”
Also Left: “But not THOSE people!”

  7. Well, it would be interesting to know how/if the Trudeau government put pressure on gofundme to seize the truckers money. This protest. In Ottawa is permitted under our charter of rights and freedoms as part of our constitution which was rewritten in the 1980s. We may be getting internet censorship controlled by Trudeau later this year…..it. Was supposed to come under bill C36 which tied when last years election was was called but apparently will be reintroduced this year. The disarmament of Canadian citizens has begun by a process which totally sidestepped parliament and our elected representatives and was essentially a decree by Trudeau.
Our reported news is filtered it seems. International news is the best way to find out what is really going on. Smaller independent media such as True North or Rebel etc mail be put out of business by this censorship situation on the horizon but no one knows.
A lot here feel we are about to become China…..or maybe Venezuela.

In closing I invite you to Google what the NDP party leader, Mr Singh, has been saying about the truckers protest participants.

One more thing…in the election of last fall Trudeau and his party recited less than 1/3 of the votes cast and is currently running the country like an omnipotent xxxxxxx. 2/3 of the voters did not vote for him or his party.

    • Please pardon the typos…my spell check on my iPad is possessed and changes things sometimes when I hit send. It is an old iPad that really needs replacing.

      • Dave, If it’s an iPad, it’s probably autocorrect that’s giving you grief. You should turn it off. (Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Correction)

“Autocorrect is a product of the devil. Whomever invented it will burn in hello.” 😉

        • You should see what autocorrect does when I forget that I’ve left the Czech alphabet turned on and try to type a note in English. It’s such a glorious mess of consonants that I can’t bear to turn it off.

  8. Gofundme refused to take donations for families of the Officers persecuted in the Freddie Gray case by the corrupt DA in Baltimore.

  9. Gofundme makes around 3% on every donation. It’s a healthy amount to handle money, and their arbitrary way of manipulating the money looks like fraud.

    • And the West Virginia AG was also making a stink and encouraging any WV residents who felt that they’d been defrauded by GoFundMe to file a complaint with his office.

  10. I’ve donated to a lot of worthy causes through GFM. Nuked the account yesterday. If you know someone who needs help, I guess point them at givesendgo.

  11. I was worried* when Sarah Hoyt used GFM for her desperation fundraiser, but donated. It worked out OK, but she says if she gets desperate enough to need a fundraiser, GiveSendGo is the choice.

FWIW, GSG is reporting a boatload of cyber attacks, with indications it’s some nation-state’s work. At least one other organization (Rumble, a U-tube competitor) has offered servers.

(*) Witness the Kenosha fundraising crapout, while BLM and CHAZ kept getting money.

  12. GFM are despicable. Good to see the convoy’s set up alt funding routes. But is Trudeau and Ottawa pd about to get heavy? I don’t think that’d go down too well.

  13. The real question is, what do you do after The Honkening? Peaceful redress of grievance has been tried. Made the headlines even. When do we go to the rope?

    • The obvious route would be for the truckers to say: “If you don’t want us in your city, we’ll go home. Good luck getting deliveries.”
