Apparently California is having second thoughts on killing the last nuke plant…

An aggressive push toward renewable energy has run headlong into anxiety over keeping the lights on in California, where the largest utility is considering whether to try to extend the lifespan of the state’s last operating nuclear power plant.

Full article, HERE from the AP.

This is hilarious! After years, the econazis, with the concurrence of Moonbeam Brown, finally got the legislation through to shut down Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in 2025.

Now they are staring the reality in the face of not having enough power for the summer heat, and the ongoing construction in SoCal. A couple of years ago, even WITH the plant operating, they had to put rolling blackouts into effect. Since they provide 9% of California’s power, and the wind/solar hasn’t made up the difference, calmer heads are now going ‘wait a minute’!

I was out there when they had the rolling blackouts and word got out that Diablo Canyon was putting the second unit back on line temporarily. That night on the news there were pictures of the econazis in their Volvos and Volkswagen buses lined up at the main gate protesting!!!

Honestly, I don’t think they CAN save the plant in two years, just due to the paperwork involved, and you can bet the econazis will be suing the hell out of everybody to stop it.

We shall see… or not if the lights go out…

  1. Will the last folks leaving Kalifornia please turn out the….oh. Never mind.

  2. The blackouts have been a California thing for a long, long time.

My parents lived just outside Sacramento in the 1960s. I rememeber the ‘rolling blackouts’ then. They also did a “voltage drop” thing where all the lights would go dim and most appliances and TVs wouldn’t work. My mom used to get mad when she missed her soap operas.

This wasn’t out in redneckville, this was in between the capitol on one side and Mather AFB on the other.

  3. Been away from the nuclear regulatory morass for a number of years. However, if I recall correctly, once a utility gives notice to the NRC that on a given date they will permanently shutdown a nuclear power plant, and request a license modification to that effect, it becomes increasingly difficult to retract that request as time goes on. At some point, and I’m not sure when that is, a complete relicensing effort will be required, including an assessment of the plant condition for continued operation. This will be similar to extending the operating license of an operating plant. Typically, plants that plan on extending an operating license start the process at least five years before the license expires. Given our current administration, I would expect the NRC to delay the process as long as possible. Yeah, the NRC is supposed to be non-political, but one only has to look to the Yucca Mountain fiasco to know better.

Californians better learn to enjoy the suck.

  4. I’m old enough to remember when California was the place of innovation and the “good life”. Sad to see what is happening. Worse, the infection has spread to Oregon and Washington.

    • And seeping into pretty much all of the intermountain West, alas. Between the university and Californian imports, I swear Missoula, Montana might as well be part of California. Jackson, Wyoming was more Californicated in the nine years between my first visit and my most recent. I’ve heard similar complaints from folks in Idaho.

  5. RHT- Yeah, it ‘may’ get done FOR them…

    TRX- Didn’t know that. Wow!

NRW- Thank you! Again, I wasn’t aware of ALL the hurdles.

WSF- All that, AND Denver and Boulder.

  6. Same thing with Turkey Creek in Florida. Can’t wait for the EcoNazis to discover that TC is almost 75% responsible for keeping up the population of manatees (due to the warm water discharge, especially during the last 20 years of boiling hot winter weather where manatees not around TC have been found with frost bite and dead from cold shock.)

And TC is The preferred place for manatee sex, as manatees seem to ‘like it hot’ when they do the blubber bouncing thing.

  7. CA’s last attempt to fix the electric supply problem was to mandate a 2x cost increase for the hours of noon to 8pm, hoping that the added expense would force people to use less, so they wouldn’t have to deal with the flak about brownouts/blackouts.

  8. We lived in Chico, CA for 30 years. Can’t recall now, but somebody put out info on how to read the code on your PG&E bill that tells you what grid you are in. We were on the same grid as the airport, so brown outs were never an issue. Cost? Oh my.

Long ago, a third grader was asked what PG&E stood for. She replied “Pigs, Goats, & Elephants”.

  9. We have Oconee Nuclear Power Plant not too far, that provides all of our power. I think they just got renewed.

  10. Beans- Yep, that’s a story the econazis don’t like. It proves them wrong.

    Will- Ouch!

RHT- Yep, that whole ‘grid’ thing IS important in Cali.

    Mike- One hopes!
