Well, it was a game!!!

The Stuperbowl turned out to be a good game this year!

Some interesting clock management at the end by Andy Reid, and a LOT of trust in his field goal kicker basically gave the Eagles one play at the end. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that played out before!

However, the commercials…left a LOT to be desired as far as I’m concerned. Disconnected, just plain stupid, or so out there one had no idea what was being advertised.

One that we got to talking about was the Coors/Miller/Blue Moon beer commercial. At $7 million for 30 seconds, we couldn’t help but wonder if the three companies decided to ‘pool’ expenses and show all three beers in what was a pretty funny commercial with some interesting special effects.

I know I’m old, but I miss the ‘fun’ commercials…

And one of my all time favorites that didn’t feature the Clydesdales…

Commercials like those just let you enjoy/laugh at the commercial, NOT spend half of it trying to figure out what the hell they were selling…

And this one from Bud in 2011 STILL brings tears to my eyes…

What do y’all think?

  1. Didn’t see it, can’t really comment. Nice to hear the Chiefs won though.

I liked the older commercials too, and I heard they’ve been sliding downhill in the last few years. The Frogs/Lizards/Ferret Bud commercials were pretty entertaining.

Philly is not taking the loss well: https://tinyurl.com/yc44532b

  2. I still tear up at the Clydesdales 9/11 commercial as well. Most of the Clydesdale commercials were excellent.

    • First time seeing that 2011 Bud commercial. Little dusty in here…

  3. Miller/Coors/Blue Moon are all the same corporation.

  4. It must be the smog in the air, but the 9/11 commercial always brings a tear to my eye.
Thank you or reminding me that once there were good ads.

  5. I rather liked the cowboys herding cats commercial of a few years back.
It was a good game and the Eagles will be back. Perhaps a rematch next year.

  6. My son and I watched the game together yesterday. Just about every commercial left us scratching our heads and asking “what the f%^( was that all about?”. We didn’t even bother with the halftime show. We looked at gun vids on youtube.

  7. Didn’t watch any NFL all season, just college games. Glad I watched this one, pretty good game IMHO. Skipped the HT show and, like everyone else, was disappointed in the commercials.

  8. Saturday I was going through boxes and ran across a photo from a trip to the Statue of Liberty, circa 1990, with the World Trade Center behind a younger version of me. I felt such a variety of emotions when I stared at it.

  9. Went to the pregame gathering in our common area, enjoyed the food, and left. Took Banner out later in time to watch the last five minutes without seeing one commercial.

  10. I liked the Budweiser Clydes and the Streaker (shorn sheep), the 1984 Apple commercial, the 9/11 commercial, and the Volkswagon “Darth Vader” ad. They were fun, or respectful, didn’t try to push a political point, and mostly made sense (as much as giant horses playing football makes sense.)

  11. Didn’t watch. Don’t do NFL. Really enjoyed the lookback at those commercials though. True classics. Thanks!!

  12. All- Thanks! TXRed- I’d forgotten about the 84 Apple commercial, that WAS a good one!

  13. The one with the Clydesdales made this Brit from across the pond tear-up just that bit. It’s a beautiful advert and equally beautiful sentiment.

  14. Halftime, the ads and OH! a football game!
    With two “national” anthems.
Because we are two nations, not so under God.

  15. The Johnny Cash song commercial was a good one, but what the young people were singing was almost indecipherable.

    • Maybe you have to be a certain age to remember Oh Shenandoah, but I recognized it right off. I thought it was a little odd to accompany Ragged Old Flag, though.

        • I’m pretty sure it’s from a Broadway musical, but I don’t know which one.

      • Dunno about a Broadway musical. If it’s the song I’m thinking of it was prominent in the movie “How The West Was Won”
