New York has for years had a ‘hard on’ for Chick-fil-A… And now we have yet ANOTHER ploy to force compliance…
What is about Chick-fil-A that absolutely drives so many on the Left to push for its destruction via periodic spasms of boycotts (that typically fail) or imposing abusive government regulations like that proposed by New York State Assemblyman Tony Simone?
Simone is a freshman member of the Empire State’s legislature, representing a district that encompasses “Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown and part of the Lincoln Center area in Manhattan,” according to his official website.
For whatever reason, Simone became deeply concerned about the fact that some Sunday travelers on the New York Thruway (NYTW) might not be able to get their lunch or dinner at one of the Chick-fil-As operating Monday through Saturday at six state-managed rest stops.

The problem is that Chick-fil-A, much like WalMart did in DC 10 or so years ago, will just close the stores rather than kowtow to the powers that be…
How many times in how many places must this crap play out before the powers that be realize they’re not going to buffalo corporations into doing what they want when it goes against either company policy or common sense???
Sigh…
I would have agreed with you a few years ago with the founder still alive and in control. However, given what the heirs directed Chick-fil-A to do a few years ago with LGBT and charity donations, I now wonder.
I guess we will have to wait and see.
It is said that a communist will step on the bodies of 100 poor people for a chance to throw a brick at a rich person.
They would LOVE to have CFA close up all outlets in NY.
It’s the fact that CFA still has principles, Still has standards.
That they take a stand as to what is right and what is not.
Drives the Left nuts.
It’s not anti-CFA, it’s anti-Christianity. We ran into the same thing with a small local business. They sell dairy (including ice cream cones) and we live in a border town with a lot of through traffic. Their hours are Monday through Saturday. During the summer they are packed and all year round they are busy, selling cones and dairy products, mostly to travelers. They could make a lot of extra money by being open on Sunday but chose not to.
When they opened there were letters to the editor of our local paper about how they had “no right” to be closed on Sunday, that it hurt our town to have businesses that weren’t available on the “busiest day of the week”. Never mind all the other businesses that weren’t open on any given day, but this business is run by an explicitly Christian family, their rationale was explicitly Christian, and therefore was subject to attack.
Bingo. We have a winner.
We live on a spiritual battlefield, and most people are stuck in the Matrix without a clue while the battle rages around them.
Until the late 60’s (IIRC), PA had laws the banned most businesses from being open to the public on Sunday. They were called Blue Laws, I think. Only a few, maybe supermarkets, were open then. I suspect that other N.E./nearby states had similar rules. One response to that ban was most businesses stayed open very late on Friday and Saturday evenings, like 11pm. When I moved to Silicon Valley in the mid 70’s, I was surprised to find that they pretty much rolled up the sidewalks when the sun went down. I was really used to stores being open LATE.
It is another power grab by the leftist communists that want total control over people, corporations, and every facet of life. A far left communist in Maine has just decided in her own to disqualify president Trump from the ballot and convicted him of a treasonous crime against the United States without a fair trial. This is just another move to take away your right to vote just as the communist governor of Colorado removed Trump from that states ballot. Where is the justice we all recited in The Pledge of Allegiance?
Just going along with the screwball liberal Democrats. She did back off to await rulings from the court challenges. She is also anti-gun. This is Maine, everybody has guns. Ranked choice voting has let in Democrats until Republicans figure out how to work that system.
Render to Ceasar that what is Ceasar’s.
If CFA is to have stores on state tollroads, then the tacit implication is playing the state’s game. The game is complete control over every individual and every corporate body.
CFA can simply abandon those locations.
The much larger concern is why the state acts as thus. We know why and the how; the apathy of The People.
Alternately, CFA and supporters can fight the state from the position of the state adopting powers unto itself which it should not have.
But the people have already engaged thw state on a myriad of fronts. The state doesn’t much care even as it hemorrhages tax base.
Take the ‘Remington strategy’ and leave the state.
If the state wants to go that oath, double or treble it. Make the state feel the heat.
Applegreen has the NYTW locations (33 year contract to renovate/provide services.) CFA leases space from Applegreen, presumably.
Text of the bill (A08336) wants to make it mandatory for such locations to be open “seven days a week”. NYS is bound by Article 1, Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the states from passing ex-post-facto bills, so existing CFA locations would be grandfathered in. However, it matters what’s in the contract between Applegreen and CFA and whether Applegreen can cancel CFA’s lease for any reason. (No, I don’t have the text of that agreement.)
Also we’re dealing with a state government well practiced in dirty tricks, so even though they might not try to force existing CFAs at NYTW locations out of business for THIS reason, they could easily put pressure on them (or Applegreen) in other ways.
“Sure, we’ll be open Sundays. We’ll serve only wafers and grape juice. Unless we can get a liquor license and also serve tiny amounts of wine.”
“How many times in how many places must this crap play out before the powers that be realize they’re not going to buffalo corporations into doing what they want when it goes against either company policy or common sense???”
How about never, because that has nothing to do with it. Assemblyman Simone is simply going for the low hanging fruit to throw under the bus. He gets his (unconstitutional) bill passed, CFA closes down, then he gets to turn to his constituency with a fist pump and say “See, I showed them!”.
They want Chick-Fil-A to close. That’s their goal. If Chick-Fil-A closes, these leftists win.
Make it fair for all. All New York politicians, administrators, judges, bureaucrats, and their staff members, should be required to work on Sunday or be fired. That, and made to repay any Christmas bonuses.
I like it! Our courts are backlogged. You want private businesses to be open, so should state businesses. Keep the same hours as restaurants as well. DMV open from 6AM to 11 PM, etc.
I grew up with blue laws, lived Metro with everything open all the time, and have moved rural without blue laws but businesses operate as if they are still present. Slower, you get time off for faith and family, less stress, and you plan for things to be closed. Inconvenient if you can’t plan more than 12 hours in advance.
The real reason blue laws are hated is their link to Christianity, keeping the Lord’s day holy.
All- Interesting comments, and RHT, I had to admit I didn’t think about ‘that’ angle…
Politicians and Bureaucrats will never learn as long as they pay no price for their actions and decisions.
It’s why I face term-limits. Those in power should not be insulated from the world that their decisions create by gold-plated pensions or permanent membership of the class that can vote their own salaries.
People forget that no amount of talent in our politicians, can make up for a lack of experience , appropriate motivation and character.
+2
Colorado has term limits. Doesn’t keep the state from being deep purple but we recycle the idiots (except Federal office holders).
Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo
There must be… TOTAL COMPLIANCE.
Yep, term limits are looking better and better…at ALL levels…
Though I’m not as much of a CFA fan since the founder died and the company made it’s moves toward wokeness to a degree, I think Simone’s intent is not to have them open on Sunday, rather it is to have them pull out and have another company take the locations. Any shutdown of a non-Left-blessed business is a Left win. And yes, I used “blessed” on purpose.
