A bit of history-
Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their independence from Great Britain. On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.
Of course in ‘many’ places fireworks are now outlawed, ‘official’ celebrations are being pushed to be ‘low-key’ as some might find it “offensive”, and we know about the various protests, etc…
This is a holiday that has been missed by far too many Americans while at sea, in the sandbox or deployed elsewhere around the world. Take this time to thank a vet for all that they do – at home and abroad. I hope today everyone will have the opportunity to spend some quality time with family and friends and unwind.
My thought- As far as the protestors of all types, well, screwem…
I’m PROUD to be an American, and PROUD of our heritage!!!
Light em if you got em…
Have a Happy and a Safe 4th of July, and MANY more!!!
Happy Independence Day to you, too!
Turns out ‘Silent Cal’ wasn’t so silent. Worth a read on this Independence Day. https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/address-the-celebration-the-150th-anniversary-the-declaration-independence-philadelphia?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0XmxULy3ag84czFtDYW65cxVEfgQq4Wh6cKAlNWrDgj5w4TZhkMfMKsVE_aem_1jTuLQND2sdKDZgcANssWw
Last night I helped decorate a float for the parade today. We’ll watch it and spend time in the park where the parade ends, then tonight we’ll watch fireworks.
Last year I sold ammo in the park, but the last two weeks have been long so I won’t this year.
Happy Independence Day, Old NFO. I hope that you’re able to eat some BBQ, watch the fireworks and enjoy the Day.
Independence Day, where vast sums of Colorado money is spent in Wyoming buying fireworks banned in Colorado.
Even now as a grumpy old man, I can’t get too worked up about fireworks. In my misspent youth I was an overachieving offender.
Happy Independence Day to you. At the same time, remember the events of July 4,1976, the first time the free world struck back against high-jackers and kidnappers.
All- Thank you, and I wish you the same Happy Independence Day!
John- I had not seen that, thank you!
Happy Independence Day!
The Tree of Liberty…
I’m proud of the America that used to be – not all that long ago. Now? Not so much.
Best of luck to you all. Keep fighting the good fight.
Pardon me having a wry chuckle at the thought that America’s departure from the Empire made it a lot more pleasant for those of us who remained.
Subsequent generations of British Parliamentarians had a shining example of the problems that can arise if colonists get antsy. Not that they always got it right, compromises are always required and human nature is so very fallible. But we did have one of the highest living standards in the world by the time we became independent.
Can’t blame the subsequent decline on anything but our own foolishness, either. ☹️
