Say a prayer for those dealing with the aftermath of Helene. It’s ugly all the way up into Virginia.

The remnants of Helene continued its onslaught across the Southeast Friday, with nearly 4 dozen dead across multiple states and hundreds rescued from floodwaters.

The Category 4 hurricane made landfall along Florida’s Big Bend region late Thursday with estimated sustained winds of 140 mph.

Post-landfall, the hurricane quickly weakened, but its torrential rains and gusty winds continued hundreds of miles inland, with feet of rain being reported over the Appalachians.

Thankfully, as far as I know, all my family and friends down that way are okay, but there are a lot of folks that aren’t…

  1. Yep .lots of rain . Read this a.m. I40 between Knoxville and Asheville is closed , and some damn is fixing to give way in N.C. Millions without power across several states.

That is a really pretty part of the country . Hope people evacuate , like they are warning , but truthfully it would be hard leave all your valuables , a person acquires a lot of stuff , you work hard to get it , I know it is just stuff , I guess you just pick and choose and head for higher ground . When the water is roof high or higher most stuff would get ruined anyway. Imagine having to start over at my age 60ish , Bummer .

Watched your live YT show the other day , I didn’t get bored , what days and times is it aired ?

  2. My wife and I drove over that section of I-40 on the homeward trek from out WV/VA trip. We stayed overnight at Appomattox, VA, Knoxville and Franklin, TN. We watched the approach of Helene and cut our trip a few days short.

  3. Boats- Agreed! We ‘air’ Tuesday at noon and Thursday at 1500 both CDT.

Mike- Yep, I’ve driven that stretch too. And I can think of a couple of places where the washout could have occured.

  4. My little brother lives in Mont Eagle TN. Has been here for 3+ decades and says this was the most rain he’s ever seen. My Dad is 89 and lives there also. He has seen a number of Appalachian floods and said this was one of the worst.

  5. That section of I40 goes down when the wind blows hard so it’s always a crapshoot even when there’s not a hurricane. Friends in Knoxville say they are fine, but Boone, NC, where I lived for a while got pounded. My old house was up on a hill so I wonder how it fared.

  6. I live in North Charleston, SC and we lost power for 5 hours. My oldest son lives in Goose Creek, SC about 2 miles from me and he had no issues. The wind we had was solid 20+ mph and then high gusts.

My youngest son lives in Woodstock, GA which is the North Atlanta suburbs and he had some water from a creek come into his garage but he had planned water with sand bags so there wasn’t much. A neighbor’s tree fell onto the neighbor’s car from the wind and water.
