Is scary as hell…
A bill to allow medically assisted suicide passed the New York state Assembly on Tuesday, but still faces opposition from religious leaders and other hurdles that could prevent it from being enacted.
The Medical Aid in Dying measure passed 81-67 after more than four hours of debate, with more than 10 Democrats joining the minority Republicans in voting no. It’s still unclear whether it will be considered by the state Senate or whether Gov. Kathy Hochul supports it. Ten other states allow similar practices, including Oregon, which legalized medically assisted suicide in 1997.
The bill’s supporters say it offers a compassionate choice for people who are in pain at the end of their lives. Advocates include physicians and terminally ill cancer patients, as well as people whose spouses and siblings suffered in their final moments.

The states in green, including DC, already authorised Medical Aid in Dying (MAID).
No surprise that they are all Dem states, as are the ones with ‘pending’ legislation…
Friends in Canada, both military and civilian, are up in arms over its use in Canada, especially when ‘aimed’ at military veterans with PTSD. Numerous credible reports of the Canadian equivalent of the VA offering it to military veterans have many upset, along with the ‘skew’ they are seeing toward elderly people now also.
And we know it’s being offered more and more, especially on the left coast to any and all, rather than treatments.
At what point will the states start stepping in and ‘mandating’ it in certain cases??? Another friend left OR for just that reason, as they were afraid it was coming sooner rather than later.
We already lose 20+ veterans a day to suicide, and I’ll be damned if I’ll support ANYTHING that potentially adds to that number, ‘official’ or not!!!

Another case of “How do we deal with a problem or inconvenience? Let’s kill it!” Just get the folks in marketing to come up with a pleasant euphemism. Something like “End of Life Care” or “Twilight Care.” Anything as long as there is “Care” in the description. Assisted murder is healthCARE!
As a Christian and a veteran this is still murder. Whether by an individual, hospital, or the state it is still the taking of a life and is prohibited by God’s word. As a veteran of the Vietnam War I still have guilt feelings about my participation in that mess even though my role was not in the field but by supporting the death that occurred on both sides. I have fellow vets take their own lives over it but I have never gotten that down about it but as I was told when I was leaving Vietnam, “You can leave Vietnam, but Vietnam will never leave you.
Hey Old NFO,
This is just a way for the state to after they have soaked up your labor for 50+ years, instead of “paying it back”, now you are “non productive” anymore, they can get rid of you with a minimum of fuss and muss and little resource spent. It is a game changer if it goes mainstream, get rid of all those old people, remember logans Run, the movie…Yeah corny but the state views us as sheep to be sheared as needed, but when we get too old and gamey, rather than put us *out to pasture* for our well earned retirement, get rid of us rather than squander the resources, except the well connected, they will be covered. Its bovine scatology.
Makes me think of the scene in “Animal Farm” where, after a lifetime of dedicated service pulling the plow, the horse, instead of the promised “honorable retirement”, is shipped off to the glue factory.
Or will it to the Soylent plant for us?
There is so much wrong with MAID that it is almost impossible to figure out where to start. I could hardly agree more with the comments already posted. The only thing I could possibly add is that it reflects a profound rot in the whole moral never mind ethical fabric of our society.
Well, we see the result in Canada.
A young vet has depression and is encouraged to MAID.
I have seen the terminally ill on their deathbed with little hope of recovery, and heard relatives say they should be allowed to be put out of their misery.
It sounds compassionate.
It is a slippery slope to Soylent Green.
Slippery slope indeed. At 80, I need to prepare for the end. There are hard choices, but will be my choices, not the state.
The impact on the person’s family is too often, horrific. Many of us have personal experiences that haunt us.
All- Thank you. I see that I’m not the only one that doesn’t like this…
It’s a bad idea as others have mentioned. It will be used against the chronically ill, mentally ill (or those who could be labeled as such), infants with birth defects…
It’s evil but called good.
Gee, where have I heard that before?
Even for those who like the idea of making this legal, this isn’t a good time for it. AI could remake medical science in the next few years. What today seems hopeless could become hopeful tomorrow.
But politics on the left isn’t really about hope for tomorrow.
Tuvela- Agreed!
Randy- As usual…sigh
Not all are blue states. Montana,Indiana, and Missouri are red.
Looked into Indiana
Pending legislation is a stretch. Rep Matt Pierce has introduced a House Bill for this for the past 3 sessions. It has never gotten out of committee. Not sure if the committee has even voted on it.
No, ewe aren’t. Getting more purple every year, dies to Democrat migration to the cities, but so far, not yet Democrat.
Kermit- Thanks, I wasn’t aware of that.
Assisted suicide is sought so leftists can more easily murder people they don’t like. It has nothing to do with mercy.
So glad that Texas doesn’t do this. Maybe I’m too cynical but, could n’t this be used so that heirs get their inheritances faster?
It’s OUTRAGEOUS and satanic. I helped save a relative from MAID in Canada not so long ago, so it’s personal. What utter demonic evil masquerading as progressive virtue.
Dan- True!
Emily- Exactly!
LSP- No disagreement here.
As Kermit said, Montana is a deep red state, although we have had medically assisted suicide for a while now. Although now retired for over 7 years I was a funeral director for over 50 years and a coroner for over 40, (although in a very isolated area) but I have “stayed in touch” with colleagues in both worlds. I am not aware that this “medically assisted” hooraw has been much of a problem for individuals, families, investigators or communities. Medical providers involved, I haven’t heard. “Regular” suicide, though, is as many have commented, an absolute nightmare for everyone concerned, even somewhat peripherally.
In my mind, the ONLY reason a person should consider taking their own life is because personal health has become too painful to bear with no chance of ever recovering to a better condition. Sparing yourself suffering for no reason.
Many people (especially the young which have had few opportunities experience ‘true suffering’ could be tempted to take the permanent solution rather than pushing through to a better life. We see this all the time – I think that is why drugs and alcohol rampant use is done.
