Summer…

FINALLY got here…

Second day in a row over 100 degrees yesterday.

Usually, we get that about mid-June, so I’m not complaining. At least the humidity has been fairly low, so the ‘feels like’ was only 105 and 103.

Now the question will be will the power company be able to keep up with the demand for AC? I truly hope so… But I’m bumping my thermostat up to 76, to keep the ‘shock’ down from going in/out.

If the yard will finish dying for the summer, I’ll be good… Since I have a black thumb for anything other that weeds, I don’t try to grow flowers or shrubbery, so I don’t have to worry about that stuff.

Not saying some folks ‘know’ me, but they send me stuffed cacti for Christmas… sigh…

While the hill country and points southwest of us have gotten and are still getting rain, we haven’t seen any in over a week, but if there is a ‘good’ side to all the rain, it’s putting water into reservoirs down in that part of the country that were below 40% full.

The Panhandle and points north of us have gotten some rain, since the Red River still has water flowing, which is unusual this time of year. But I could sure do without the !@$$(_# mosquitoes!!! Especially since the state is now reporting they are carrying West Nile Virus… Grrr…

And going to the outdoor gun range is right out… There is no shade, so it’s back to the indoor air conditioned expensive one… sigh

One thing I have noticed this week is the significant ‘lack’ of day workers gathered around both the Home Despot, and Lowes… I wonder why??? 🙂

And a second day in a row of PT kicked my butt yesterday, so NOT doing that again. I need at least a day off between those workouts!

Y’all have a great weekend, stay safe, and stay cool!!!

Summer… — 14 Comments

  1. PT every other day is a good plan. Older bodies take longer to recover. Also relatedly if it really hurts when you restart PT you really need to think hard about whether to continue. Injuries just happen more and take longer to recover so trying to power through may mean you injure yourself more

  2. We need to shoot in the heat/rain/snow/cold and especially on the just nice weather days, yep, the New England seasons gives me that opportunity every year!

  3. Yeah, we got that hot and wet. Hot enough to keep me in the house where I can breath, and wet enough to turn our place into jungle. I’ll be paying a guy to slash green crap this week, and that hurts my wallet as much as my pride.

  4. This side of the mountains we are having a nice summer. West of the mountains they are in a drought and wildfires are everywhere. Lake Powell is so shrunken they are worried about keeping hydro power.

  5. Rest is one of the few four-letter words I’m not proficient at, but I do recognize its importance. The weightlifting maxim is “We grow stronger not by lifting weights, but by recovering from lifting weights.”

Which is unfortunately true – the lifting provides the signal to build stronger, but the body needs rest and nutrition to build the muscle back after the microtears caused by exercise.

Take it as an excuse to have more steak, as you need the protein to build up the lost muscle!

…and also take this as open season to tease me about “Pot? This is kettle!”

  6. Canyon lake has risen substantially, but Lake Medina only received a bump, which doesn’t help much. It’s at dead pool level, and I’m betting the farmers that need the water are getting desperate.

We’ve had more than usual rain down south of you. It’s made a green lawn, which requires more mowing. Officially, we haven’t reached 100 degrees, but my thermometer says we have, and with the amount of humidity, the heat index was 120 degrees.

    • In Southwest Ohio this week was all over the place weather wise, the only constant being high humidity. The previous week, when I had a work trip to Arlington, was more consistently hot and humid, with brief breaks for thunderstorms.

  7. Yes indeed , the hill country rain messed up our plans to spend a few days in San Angelo . Not as bad as Kerr County , but the hotel we booked had FEMA and Red Cross and other aid people in there, as well as rooms for folks who (whom?) were displaced from their homes so we thought it wouldn’t be fun or proper to take up space or visit at this time . We stopped in our tracks in Dalhart and made a u turn . By the way , Guymon Ok. looks like a cartel haven or a bordertown (on the mexican side), man that place has changed looks a little rough . It used to be the big ol Seaboard Farms meat packing plant and a nice little town , Liberal Ks. about the same . NFO glad to hear you are on the mend , stay cool on your stool . No offense to anyone living in Guymon or Liberal , or thereabouts but it is different .

  8. All- Thanks for the comments, and good points. Boats, don’t blame you, and yes, places ‘change’, not always for the good!

  9. “If the yard will finish dying for the summer, I’ll be good… Since I have a black thumb for anything other that weeds, I don’t try to grow flowers or shrubbery, so I don’t have to worry about that stuff.”

You could always hire a Shrubber!
    Wink wink

    • As long as the shrubbery is not too expensive and will provide the two level effect for a path.

      chuckling

  10. Yep, we got an inch Thursday and Friday mornings in the western Panhandle. The mosquitoes are singing, the dragon flies are trying hard to keep up, and the lawn is more lush than usual for July. They’ve gotten enough rain in eastern New Mexico to do a water release from [redacted] dam, as is required by the river compact. First time in a while. The range is very very green for mid-summer.

Come February and March, we’ll be moaning about the fire danger from all the lush dry grass. Now we are moaning about the humidity. 😉

  11. 76! I keep the thermostat at 82 and bump it up one or two F° at night.

  12. Poli- LOL, NO!

    Grog- Hell no… LOL

TxRed- Point! We haven’t seen a single dragon fly!

    R- You’re a better man than I am!
