Another one bites the dust…

Late night TV will soon be down to The Tonight Show for late TV…

CBS will cancel “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in 2026, the network announced Thursday, insisting it’s a “financial decision” and has nothing to do with a looming ownership change.

“‘THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT’ will end its historic run in May 2026 at the end of the broadcast season,” CBS said in a statement. “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire ‘THE LATE SHOW’ franchise at that time. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late night television.”

CBS said it was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” adding, “It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

Snort…if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge…

The Tonight show is 71 years old, having premiered in 1954 with Steve Allen. Jack Parr, then Johnny Carson, followed by Jay Leno for 60 years of ‘quality’ late night humor.

The Late show was a sop to Letterman when he didn’t get the Tonight Show when Carson retired in 1992, and his ‘move’ from NBC to CBS. Letterman did a poor copy of the Tonight Show (IMHO), and got stranger and stranger as the years went by.

When Colbert took over, it took an even bigger swing to the left, and became virulently anti-Trump in 2015.

Personally, I think Paramount is throwing the rats off the ship before CBS gets sold/merged/or???

But since I don’t watch any of the late night stuff, I don’t care anymore…

YMMV, IANAL, and I didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn, so there…

  1. Colbert is a tool that is no longer needed. He was used to push the anti-Trump thoughts, hoping in vain that people take a ‘celebrities’ view more important than their own. Now that Trump’s 2nd term in is full swing, there is nothing the Left can do to stop it. So they fling ‘poo’ and claim they are making a difference. The same can be said with Jimmy Kimmel.

    • I remember when Kimmel was happy watching the Juggies on “The Man Show.”

  2. Hey Old NFO,

The late shows were supposed to be full of humor and slightly ribald thoughts for adults after the kids went to bed, but they swung to the left alienating a huge part of the population becoming a schill for the DNC and their politicians. Cobert was a partisan hack as were the rest of them and they were losing market share as their niche market got smaller and more rabid. couldn’t have happened soon enough.

  3. You have to wonder if USAID funds were helping to keep this show on life support.

  4. I am deeply concerned for America without Colbert’s honesty and intellectual rigor.

I am also selling snake oils, cryptocurrencies you have never heard of, condominiums, and shares in various bridges, such as Brooklyn, Golden Gate, and Tacoma Narrows.

Slightly more seriously, I could start my own television network, with hard hitting investigative content like card games, and interviewing street prostitutes about problems of the scientific literature.

Completely seriously, I don’t think I have that kind of money to burn. Nor do I have time to waste that way. Now, I do squander a lot of my time, but, still.

Jean Colbert from Familiar of Zero has had more of an intellectual impact on my life (still almost none), and a more positive direct impact.

  5. Colbert has become another toilet paper celebrity. Used once, and flushed. Now, like toilet paper, he will disappear.

  6. I grew up with Carson’s Tonight Show. And I really liked Jay Leon’s version. But shift work precluded me watching the last several years of his run. These days you could probably run it as a streamed on a video service, minus the musical acts. Come to think of it, wouldn’t it be much different from Joe Rogan.

  7. I don’t watch any of it either. I only know Colbert as “that dude who doesn’t know how to pronounce his own name”.

  8. Greg Gutfeld is much more entertaining to watch.
