Interesting that this popped up today after NO coverage earlier in the week that I saw…

SACRAMENTO  — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office backed off plans to close parts of Interstate 5 on Thursday after mounting tension with federal and military officials over a White House-directed live-fire event off Camp Pendleton’s coast.

The governor’s office said they were told federal authorities were considering closing the freeway and when no order materialized by Wednesday, state officials began weighing whether to do so themselves. Driving that decision, they said, were safety concerns about reports that Navy ships would fire live ordnance over the freeway onto the base during the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary celebration Saturday.

The Marine Corps insisted that “no highways or transportation routes will be closed” following a detailed risk assessment. Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis of the I Marine Expeditionary Force said Thursday that no ordnance will be fired from a U.S. Navy ship during the event, but Marines will fire high explosive rounds from artillery known as M777 Howitzers into designated ranges “with all safety precautions in place.” Simulated explosives and visual effects will also be used, he said.

This makes no sense as anything but a political ploy. There are a ‘lot’ of things that get fired over the California coast into ranges inland. Why ‘this’ particular instance?

As noted, there was no Navy firing of anything in this demo. And the Marines had already done the requisite preplanning and safety investigations/briefs.

Or was it to penalize the Marines and folks who were planning to attend the displays? I-5 is bad enough with the normal traffic issues anyway, much less with 17 miles closed!

  2. Newsom is just trying to make any non-Dem event painful for people to enjoy them. Nothing Newson has ever done has been good except for getting money for Newsom.

  3. The state has long coveted the undeveloped coastline that is Camp Pendleton, and this is just another ploy to try and get it from the Federal Gov’t.

  4. US Marine Corps and US Naval forces announce a live fire, time on target exercise to take place in Sacramento, CA later this month.

  5. Don’t forget that this could also be driven by stupidity, with the state completely misunderstanding what the Navy and Marines are planning.
    Given the Democrat focus on things besides merit, stupidity and misunderstanding are always a strong possibility.

  6. It was grand political theater. I suggest they remove the stage by announcing the moving of Camp Pendleton, and wait for the tar and feathering of Newsom. Use any federal funds for California to move the base.

  9. Shades of… Puerto Rico, when they wanted to kick the US Navy out of their live-fire range, and succeeded.

    So the Navy pulled out of Puerto Rico, basically, by reducing their presence.

    And the Puerto Rico economy crashed.

    Be funny if something similar happened to Califrutopiastan.

    Considering that there is no alternative between Oceanside and San Onofre that can be driven short of taking the 76 all the way inland to I-15 and then cutting back to Anaheim via Corona on the 91 you are understating things just a touch

    Whatever Newsom does is always for politics. In this case, he has been repeatedly protesting how President Trump (Hitler) has been sending in National Guard (Storm Troopers) to deal with riots and attacks against ICE.

    My guess in this case, he was going to try and sell it as “saving people from the reckless firing of live ammunition (OH NOOOO) by closing the highway.” After he found out that narrative wasn’t going to work, he didn’t do it.
