Hoist on their own petard…
You gotta hand it to the previous leadership at The Walt Disney Company, they were totally committed to hurting their business in order to score useless political points with a tiny percentage of their customer base.
Just a few years ago, Disney found itself unnecessarily in the middle of a political fight with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The state legislature in 2022 passed the Parental Rights in Education Act, meant to ensure that children were protected from being exposed to inappropriate content at a very young age.
This was immediately labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” act from left-wing critics, apparently desperate to have children in K-3 grades taught about advanced sexual topics. What did this bill have to do with a private company that ostensibly makes family-friendly entertainment and runs all-ages theme parks? Literally nothing. And initially, then-CEO Bob Chapek maintained that the company shouldn’t address it.
Full article, HERE from Fox News.
Among other things, the fight cost Disney control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which had been their self-licking ice cream cone for over 60 years. In 2023, Governor Ron DeSantis replaced the Disney-controlled Reedy Creek Improvement District with the CFTOD, a five-member board appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate to oversee land use and public services for Walt Disney World, and remove Disney’s self-governing power.
In other news, HERE, they are still crawfishing away from politics and political slants in movies…
I can’t help but wonder how many millions of dollars Disney has cost itself…
“I can’t help but wonder how many millions of dollars Disney has cost itself…”
Nowhere near enough monies lost…..,yet.
I’m pretty sure Millions is missing a few zeros – my guess at this point is $10+ Billion
We live 15 minutes away and I can tell you WDW has lost several years’ worth of our annual passes and those of a few friends. We won’t spend a dime at or for Disney. It is unfortunate that peripheral business employees in the area are hit by the downturn of WDW visitors.
The entertainment industry has gotten very “preachy” in interjecting messaging into movies etc. I often get 1/2 way into a movie or tv series and turn it off . Many movies seem to be made by Hollywood for Hollywood and not in the least bit entertaining for myself . You know like they gotta check the all boxes to produce a show . There are still a few good movies/shows out there , so it is not all bad . As far as Disney goes , the amusement parks , I’ve never been it has always been pricey , outlandishly so now . Paying a big chunk to wait in lines ain’t my cup of tea .
Too bad Disney didn’t stick to Jiminy and Tinkerbell, etc. After finagling the authority via RCID to have their own nuclear power station, the Magic Kingdom could’ve had another revenue source.
Hey Old NFO,
Yeah they stuck their noses into the culture wars and got burned, I had to explain to my Disney loving Aunt who made some disparaging comment about Disantis during that time and I replied”If Disney hadn’t stuck their nose into “Don’t say Gay” issue in the elementary school because some woke employees and activist started a fight, Disney wouldn’t be in this spot”. She didn’t say anything to me for the rest of the day. We have since then talked. I think she realized that I was correct.
Seldom do some upper management types remember their customer’s can vote with their wallets, and do.
All- Thanks for the comments, and good points! I remember in 1971, it cost $3 for a day pass for an adult…sigh
Disney, Budweiser, Jaguar….no shortage of companies willing to commit Sepiku to satisfy the evil left.
“I can’t help but wonder how many millions of dollars Disney has cost itself…”
Well, I know how much money of mine they’re getting now and in future:
None.
