Shutdown Day 1…

And we’re off…

And apparently the new ‘online’ signup was ‘off’ too…

Senate Democrats on Tuesday voted to refuse to enter into official negotiations with the House on a spending bill, saying there can be no talks until the GOP agrees to end the shutdown that began Tuesday morning.

The 54-46 vote showed Senate Democrats remain united, and the vote shoves the issue back over to House Republicans, who have now seen the senior chamber kill four different proposals to end the shutdown.

But Republicans said Democrats now own the shutdown by refusing even to talk.

“They literally just voted against working out a compromise,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, Republicans’ leader.

Democrats have been insistent on a “clean” stopgap funding bill that doesn’t affect President Obama’s health law. House Republicans, meanwhile, have said there must be conditions.

So people are being sent home with no pay, and the possibility of NO backpay!  I can’t help but wonder how many will come back?  And what happens if this runs 2, 3, 4 weeks???

Could ‘you’ survive a week or a month without a paycheck?

Shutdown Day 1… — 15 Comments

  1. Saw this on another blogsite and have to agree – MILLIONS OF US CITIZENS UNEMPLOYED FOR MONTHS AND NOT A PROBLEM. FEDERAL WORKERS FURLOUGHED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND PEOPLE LOSE THEIR MINDS!

Its just for show man, a distraction from Obamacare taking effect and people waking up to ‘I didn’t sign up for THIS crap!’. Its going to be a couple of days of unpayed vacation and the NSA is going to keep on tapping your phones so no harm done . . . :^)

Yeah, I’m cool for a couple of months of no wages, but would have to cut down on some ‘wants’ so my ‘needs’ are taken care of.

  2. The only branches of the federal govt. that need to be funded are the legislative, judicial and executive along with the military. All other functions need to be handled by each state this includes, parks, roads, welfare, health, education etc.

  3. +1 to Duke. I’m having a tough time being concerned for how the furlough affects government bloat.

  4. Democrat logic:

Negotiate with Iran, a country that sponsors terrorists around the world – no problem.

Negotiate with the GOP to keep our federal government running – big problem.

BTW – I agree with j.r. and Duke above.

  5. There’s not many that could deal with that long with no paycheck. It’s going to get worse before it gets better.

  6. I survived 15 months without a paycheck when it was decide my skill set wasn’t need. I could do a couple more months.

  7. I certainly _could_ get by without a paycheck for a month. I’ve done it for longer than that, after all. Happens pretty often, to folks out here in the real world.

But the thing is, the first thing you do, when your old employer stops paying you, is _find a new job_. Or at least start hunting for one.

  8. I remember how happy I was when they didn’t pay the entire military – I wasn’t happy, but lots of businesses made allowances for the stupid Congress.

My Congressman, Denny Heck, has notified his people that he has supported paying the Federal Workers for not working while this goes on. I didn’t say he was real smart, but he at least owns up to his mistakes.

  9. Not for long without going to the TSP money. And that has consequences I’d prefer not to deal with.

  10. Seems the Army is shutting down some of their online training programs. I can’t tell you what the acronyms mean but here it is.

They cancelled WLC and ALC WTF!

  11. j.r.- EXCELLENT point!

    Duke/Rev- Concur!

    Tim- Good point too!

    Jenn- Living above their means…

Gerry- Yep, I could last at least three before dipping into the 401K

lelnet- Another great point, and folks are already doing that…

Earl- Yep, at least he is willing, you and I remember when ‘we’ didn’t get paid…

    PH- Know what you mean…

WSF- Without the civilians to support the on line training, they have to drop it. That is what is happening and Navy is doing the same thing.

  12. Smarter Half and I have a 6 to 8 month cushion … at current spending rates. Cut back to college level spending and we’re good for neigh on a year.
Now if we chose to “hoist the black flag” we’d do VERY well.

  13. Funny that “dear leader” is willing to negotiate with terrorist but not with the GOP? makes me wonder how his sympathies lies. I figure he knows that the MSN will give him cover against his domestic opponents.

  14. Stretch- You’ve planned well…

    Skip- I would, actually I wouldn’t buy one to start with… 🙂

    Bob- Point!
