About that whole equal pay thingie…

Democrats are trying to get the female vote in November with a public relations campaign about “equal pay for equal work,” yet they are not practicing what they preach. The White House and Senate Democratic leaders employ fewer women as top aides, so they earn less.

To play off “Equal Pay Day” on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a show vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which shifts the burden to employers to prove pay discrepancies are not related to gender. Democratic Conference Vice Chairman Chuck Schumer tweeted Monday: “Without action to address the gender pay gap, women won’t reach pay equity until 2058.”

Except that the media is actually paying attention, and even the White House is under fire…

“Now the study also showed that men and women with the same White House jobs earn exactly the same salary. Now the White House said its gender pay gap is tied to job experience, education, and hours worked among other factors. This matters because those explanations, according to the Labor Department, explain a good deal of the gender pay gap nationally. The big difference in these stories: When President Obama discusses this issue nationally, he doesn’t mention those other work variables, only the broad figure, that 77 cents for every dollar is what women earn compared to men,” said Garrett.

“When the factors that the White House used to defend its gender pay gap are used nationally, the Labor Department says the difference in median wages between men and women shrinks to about 5 cents to 7 cents on the dollar.”

Interesting how even the administration isn’t playing by the ‘rules’ it wants everybody else to use…  But that seems to be teh way…

Do as I say, not as I do…

  1. All pigs are equal but some are more equal than others on the Animal Farm. Isn’t that how it works?

  2. But that’s the way the White House (and the fed gummint in general) works all the time, isn’t it?

  3. Yep! That is exactly how it works with Liberals. And the thing that I question is the gubment has such a strict pay structure and and everyone is paid according to GS levels, which are published. And withing the levels are more pay for longevity. So, the White House minions aren’t on the GS pay structure?

  4. Did Anne Curry make as much as Matt Lauer?
Does Diane Sawyer make as much as George Stephanopoulos?

    Enquiring minds want to know?

  5. The only profession I can think of where women make more money than men are fashion models. I never should have dropped out of The Barbizon School – biggest mistake of my life…

  6. A major cause of the gender pay gap is that a woman might take a year out with a new baby. If she comes back after a year, that’s a year’s increase in salary she’s not going to get back.

  7. And there’s already a law that requires equal pay on the books. Not that folks like Babs Milkulski would let a little fact like that get in the way of a good Republican’s-are-evil hissy fit.

  8. LL/WSF/Rev- Yep, as usual… sigh

CP- Nope, they’re basically contractors… LOL

Gerry- Not a clue, but I’m betting not.

    Mrs. C- Good point!

Frank- That’s a good point too!

    PH- True dat!!!

  9. Equal pay for equal work – it’s just that most women either don’t want to do equal work or simply can’t.

F’rinstance, there aren’t many skirt-wearing ditch-diggers out there, or bomb techs, or miners, or paratroopers; certainly there’s a handful of women both capable and willing to do these jobs, but generally it’s only them, so that they can be the First! Womyn! X!

Mostly the nasty and dangerous jobs get done by men.

And the funny thing about nasty, dangerous jobs; you’ve got a much higher chance of getting killed doing it- men getting killed in workplace accidents a lot more than women, which is one of thise things like most aborted babies being black that you never quite hear about from the people you’d expect to be upset -but with higher risk always comes higher pay.

    • Equal pay for equal work – it’s just that most women either don’t want to do equal work or simply can’t.

You may be right in general, but I have several female cousin coal mine workers that can prove you wrong.

      • “Most”.

I expect that for every woman willing to work on a farm, in a mechanic’s shop or down a mine, there’s half a dozen who’d find the very idea to be alien.

  10. The beginning of this discussion was about how the government, Democrats and media want to spin the equal pay issue into a win for Dems in November – and my question is why are any of us spinning wheels talking about the total spin zone of Government, Democrats or Republicans, and Media? I know we have better things to do – there are beautiful cars, planes and women everywhere and don’t get me started on fine shooting fun.

  11. Coconut/WSF- Good points…

Rick- Yep, nothing new… move along…

Earl- That we do, it’s the ‘distraction’ factor…
