That was weird…

So the radio alarm goes off at 0600 this morning, and ‘something’ that was playing yanked my subconscious straight into the past…

I couldn’t get this scene out of my mind for some reason…

I grew up listening to him on XERF, 1570AM in the 60s, and he was on AFRTS up through the mid-70s.

He was the counter-culture icon, as he was always seen but not heard. I think American Graffiti was the first time most of us ever saw the face, but we sure as hell knew that voice… 🙂

Still trying to figure out what got me on this kick this morning. Now I’m hungry, more coffee is needed, and I guess sleeping in is a non-starter.

Sigh…

  1. Hopefully the ‘whatever music it was’ wasn’t paul simon or some other liberal b-cut musician.

Go have some bacon, that might help. 😉

  2. Wolfman Jack and Dr. Demento. Then MTV video jockeys (vjays), when MTV still played videos, not c(rap). The MTV vjays moved to XMRadio, and XM is dying slowly. Now an AI decides what music you like – a la Pandora and Apple iTunes radio.
Quantity served goes up, quality goes down…

  3. Grog- Bacon was good! :-)Thick cut pepper bacon is ALWAYS a good way to start the day!

    WN- Yeah, sigh…

  4. If the alarm kicks and it’s Sonny and Cher singing, “I’ve Got You Babe” – you are living Groundhog Day…again.

But yes, the Wolfman was absolutely ICONIC.

  5. Hey Old NFO;

I remember Wolfman Jack, When I was a little person (10 years old) I listened to Wolfman Jack on AFN in Europe and I thought he was an AFN DJ, I listened to his stuff at night and that is where I got my “Superband” listening. It was great! I found out years later when I finally saw American Graffiti that I realized that he was a syndicated DJ. Funny how things works.

  6. Minor point, I think he was always heard, but not seen.

  7. My radio-friend Biff was arguably the last person to interview him on-air.
‘The Wolfman’ passed about two weeks later.
Biff continues to use his personalized name ID and message on his answering machine, “Hi, this is the Wolfman. I’m here with my friend Biff Jannuzzi, man…”
    A memorable, talented funny guy.
We miss you Bob (Wolfman Jack’s real name)

  8. American Graffiti brought back some memories for me, but they were of long nights in Long Beach, CA, at the time. At their age I was already in the Navy and enjoying the sights of downtown LB among others. But being from the South, I never heard of Wolfman Jack until the movie.

  9. Watch what you eat. I had a dream where Hillary Clinton and I were partners in a bicycle race up Loveland Pass. Woke up shaking. No more tacos at bedtime for me.

  10. AFRTS. Forrestal was inport in Naples in ’74 or ’75 for a while and we were up in the hills in a volcano crater at Carney Park. American beer and food without long lines, (and no sailors with different colored jerseys to make the lines way too long) and American music playing on AFRTS.

Have not heard or thought of AFRTS in a very long time.

    Thank you!

  11. I always thought the Wolfman broadcast pirate out of Mexico, which confused me about the premise of the movie, that one could drive to see him from Cali.

  12. All- Thanks for the comments, I seem to have struck a chord 🙂

    Posted from my iPhone.

  13. “I am just a little tired of the Stones and the Beatles, and I don’t care if I ever hear ‘Louie Louie’ ever again.”

I feel the same way about “Respect” and “Piano Man”.

  14. Havent thought of the wolfman in years, brings a smile to my face. many happy evenings crusing and listening to the wolfman. Thanks for the memories.
