Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance…

Sometimes we need to take a step back from the PC world, and remember how we grew up…

I know I’m an old fart, but I remember seeing Red Skelton, Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Jonathan Winters, Flip Wilson, Don Rickles, Rodney Dangerfield, Sid Caesar, Bob Hope, and many other ‘comedians’ on TV as I was growing up. Their comedy was totally different than what we see today.

They weren’t anti-American, and the jokes they told normally skewered the political elite, their own ‘ethnicity’ and news stories of the day. And at least on air, there wasn’t any cussing (although Bob Hope was foul mouthed around the military)…

Different world back then… sigh

  1. Don’t forget Carol Burnett – her show was a ‘must watch’, the cast were hilarious, they often could not get off camera before they started laughing themselves !

  2. Yeah, they were all class acts.
    I can’t think of any current entertainer who is funny, talented, non-political and doesn’t use blue material.
    It was a different time.

    gfa

  3. j.r.- Yep, I should have added her and Phyllis Diller!

    AOW- Agreed!

    gfa- That it was…

  4. Most of the entertainers about which we’re waxing reminiscent were either WWII vets, or at least USO entertainers during that war. They knew what it cost to remain free, and appreciated what we had.

    The current crop of thugs and losers aren’t worth the time of day. What bothers me the most is, they wouldn’t be famous if there weren’t the large group of equally-ignorant admirers who give them money to spew their anti-American garbage.

  5. I watched his show while sitting on the floor. Because I knew I was going to laugh so hard I’d fall off the couch anyway.

  6. Hey Old NFO;

    I remember watching “HeeHaw” with my dad and the “tales of woe” in the cornfield was a staple. “Oh Looord agony on me….why did you leave me all alone……I searched the world over and thought I found true love….You met another and Pbbbbbt you were gone…..” stuff like that was hilarious.
