Arizona Memorial…

This is from 2007, but still worth the couple of minutes…

The Navy Hymn, verses one and four.

Verse 1: Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 2: O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walked’st on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 3: Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Verse 4: O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe’er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

  1. Unfortunate that the first thing that sprang to mind was that somebody somewhere will likely be b—-ing about separation of Church and State.
    It is a lovely hymn, fairly straightforward to sing as well, which is always nice!

  2. That was one of the songs sung at my high school graduation, Right before a USN Navy Lieutenant Pilot gave me the oath standing there in my cap and gown! I have been under someones thumb since the day I was born! (Wife for the last 53 years) Sigh

  3. Wing- Good point!

    Rev- You’re welcome.

    acair- Gah, you’re probably right… Although the Academies are non-denominational…

    Ev- That’s neat! And no comment…

  4. These two additional verses ring near and dear to me.
    (There are more)We always sang the aviator verse in P’cola.

    Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
    Through the great spaces in the sky.
    Be with them always in the air,
    In darkening storms or sunlight fair;
    Oh, hear us when we lift our prayer,
    For those in peril in the air!
    Mary C. D. Hamilton (1915)

    Eternal Father, grant, we pray,
    To all Marines, both night and day,
    The courage, honor, strength, and skill
    Their land to serve, thy law fulfill;
    Be thou the shield forevermore
    From every peril to the Corps.
    J. E. Seim (1966)

  5. SoCal- Yep, I remember that one from P’cola… and there are a bunch of extra verses, so to speak…
