It’s all about ‘perspective’…

And what grabs the headlines…

We all know the left is pushing the 30,000 dead per year due to guns, right?

But did you know 50,000+ die each year due to toxic substances in the workplace?

Didn’t think so… Slate has a bumper article HERE on the big picture issues, most of which revolve around known toxic substances. The real question is, if the EPA is ‘really’ protecting us, why aren’t they going after these? And where is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)?

A detailed report from the Center for Public Integrity HERE, points out that OSHA tries, but has had regulations/safety levels overturned or never enacted after years of effort. It’s a pretty long article, but worth the read.

While the EPA ‘protects’ individuals and the ‘environment’ as a whole, OSHA is responsible for the workplace (whatever that might be), but they are up against a much more aggressive set of players. Businesses don’t want more regulations, or to have to increase safety levels on the job. That costs money…

As a retired Navy type, I’m in the ‘exposure’ group for asbestos due to time on ships and working in old (WWII temp) buildings up through the early 1990s…

Kinda makes one wonder who’s side the administration is really on, doesn’t it…

  1. I’ve never considered that the administration is on “my” side.

  2. Holy shit, I can’t believe Slate printed that. As to that 30,000 deaths per year by guns, as far as FBI statistics can be trusted that number is pretty close. BUT, over half of those are suicides, so I’m not sure that counts. And the administration being on our side? That legislation protecting Monsanto from litigation should tell you everything you need to know about that.

  3. LL- Anymore, neither do I!

da- Good point, I’d forgotten about the Monsanto BS… That was one of the reasons Frank James got out of farming.

  4. I don’t think there’s ever been much question whose side the Gummint is on: their own. So whichever donor contributes the largest amounts of money … etc, etc.

    • X2 – it’s all pay to play. The concept of ‘government service’ in the present epoch simply means that the public will be ‘serviced’.

  5. I knew I was allergic to work and that it was a toxic environment! Can I use you as a reference and this page as a trusted resource? 🙂

  6. Favorite Uncle was a “boiler man” in the USN.
He died of Mesothelioma. How many TV ads per do we see lawyers working to nurse that teat?
And how often do you now think about your asbestos exposure?
I once worked as an auto mechanic. I used to work on drum brakes.
I had an air compressor and an air nozzle.
I’m sure you know “The Rest of The Story”.

  7. When I retired from the USN and came home, my fathers house was covered with asbestos shingles. Everybody thought that was a good idea till they had been up there for a few years. Baseballs, rocks, wind and sun all took their toll till I decided it was time to go back to wood shingles. This was just when the Gubmint came out with all the regs as to how you MUST get rid of it. It was going to cost me almost $7000 to get rid of it. Over twice what it cost to reshingle the house with wood. So I went and borrowed my friends backhoe, dug a trench 8′ deep right alongside the house, soaked the asbestos shingles with a hose as we knocked them off the house(wearing the little paper masks) and stuffed them into the trench, and when it was full, mashed them all down to a nice sludge and covered them right back up. I just put the stuff right back where it came from albeit in a different place !

  8. Five Ships over 20 years along with the aircraft that operated from them……………..
    MIL-H-5056, 6083 and 83282 hydraulic fluids…………….
    MIL-L-7078 turbine engine oil…………………
    Jet Fuel……………………..
This happened in the era before MSDS and EPA regs.

  9. All- Thanks for the comments.

GB- He wasn’t the first and won’t be the last… One side note, one of the ‘lead’ lawyers was Peter Angelos, he made millions off the suits, and the actual members of the class action received something like $2500-3000… He made enough to buy the Baltimore Orioles!

Ev- Yep, you weren’t the only one… Not that ‘I’ know anything about taking asbestos shingles off things like WWII barracks, etc…

Glenn- I thought it was Mil-H-5606 for hydraulic fluid??? And yeah, I’m there with ya…
