Impromptu car show…

Sooo, the usual suspects got together at the local eatery for breakfast last Saturday, and after breakfast we see this as we stroll out of the restaurant…

Rat Rods!!!

Rat rods 1

They even brought their own wrecker…Rat rods 2

All of them were real metal cars, no plastic fantastics in this group!

rat rods 5

They were also ‘artfully’ done to make them appear ratty, however, there was a LOT of big horsepower motors, and heavy duty rear ends (most of them looked like various iterations of Ford’s 9″ rear, suitably widened or shortened)

rat rods 3

The red car above, had quite the ‘artwork’ on the valve covers, velocity stacks, and the air cleaners…Rat rods 4

I couldn’t tell if this was a dip, or airbrushed… Either way all of the cars were neat, and power ranged from a tricked out in-line 6 with duals and headers, through what I think was a 5.7 Pontiac plant out of a CTO, to a full blown Mopar rig (above), some full up Ford big blocks, and at least one 454 Chevy big block.

These are a classic example of NOT judging a book by its cover, one would be sadly mistaken!!! 🙂

  1. They look awesome, hoping the brakes got upgraded to discs.

Drum brakes are not among the things I miss.

Being under the car and working through that little hole to unsuccessfully back off the adjuster is not a fond memory.

  2. LL- That they were!!!

John- Not all of them had discs… And those adjusters SUCKED!!! Many a bleeding knuckle after screwing with them!

  3. If you showed up at a rat run with a ‘glass bodied car, they’d probably run you off…..

  4. Ha. That would be fun to roll up on one of those for a race.

  5. Heath- Not that we know of… 🙂

Rick- Yeah, we couldn’t afford to PAINT ours… LOL

    drjim- I’d bet on it!!!

Dammit- That was my favorite too!

Fargo- They’d probably leave you in the dust!

Philip- Yep, I’ve seen that and the back story is truly sad. His son was killed, and there was no one to continue the collection.

  6. I’m usually not much of a Rat Rod guy (give me chrome-covered 60’s muscle any day), but DANG those are some cool lookin’ rides!

Kinda makes me pine for the good ol’ days when Management at my former workplace would let an amateur car club host shows in the employee parking lot. Had everything from Corvettes to Mustangs to rat rods to old 50’s cruisers, custom motorcycles, even an Aston Martin once if I remember right. Used to request those Saturdays off, and if that didn’t work, I’d spend my lunch break out in the parking lot ogling the cars. Almost always spent the rest of the shift starving hungry, but it was so worth it.

  7. WSF- These guys were very polite in the restaurant. Didn’t get to interact with them outside.

Raptor- That they were! And car shows DO tend to make one forget those ‘petty’ little issues like food… 🙂

    Ed- There is that… 🙂

  8. I had a sorta rat-rod ’60 Karmann-Ghia for a while. My first car was all flat-black primer (three different colors of black) with flames and a checkerboard stripe, but did not make that kind of power. Blew-up and rebuilt the engine twice.

  9. NC- LOL, I’ve seen those in Kali many times!!! You could get 172HP out of a 2180CC engine though… 🙂

  10. Nice! Gives me inspiration! Bolting replacement parts is sorta easy compared to that!

  11. I see the six has a manifold split the right way–four and two. Just sounds better that way.

  12. I never even heard of a rat rod until last night when I saw one on the latest edition of Pawn Stars. Those are some nice lookers there that you have in the post.
