Gotta love the Icelanders…

“Hey, what are you doing today?”

“Not much, just chillin’.”

“Wanna go see Fagradalsfjall? There’s supposed to be a party out there.”

“Sure!”

“Break out the Aquavit, looks like we’re going to be here a while…”

*Note- That IS a picture of the actual traffic jam of folks going out to look at the volcano. And no, Icelanders don’t get out much… 🙂

And some fantastic drone footage of the volcano from Bjorn Steinbekk!

And you can go HERE for a livestream of the volcano!

The volcano is about 8nm from Keflavik, so the folks TAD up there are getting some good views of it!

  1. I’d like to know how that drone looked after the flyover. A little scorched, maybe?

  2. The cars ought to do little swerving motions, left and right, and make it look like a MASSIVE conga line!

    Also:
“The volcano is about 8nm from Keflavik.”

    Ummmm…is that 8 nanometers?
Because that’s a bit TOO close.

  3. Frickin’ Navy people. Who measures distances in nautical miles?

That said, cool pictures. I love the car lineup. Hopefully there’s nothing else on that road, otherwise the guy just trying to get home is going to be pissed. Reminds me of border lineups in pre-Chinavirus days. I’m trying to get to my home in the border town, there are three hour lineups at the border completely blocking the highway, and when I try to drive up the shoulder some jackass pulls his car over and blocks me because he thinks I might be trying to cut the line.

  4. We see the same, actually a higher level of stupidity here in the States.

Look at the death toll of Mt. St. Helens. Most of those were ‘tourists’ of one form or another.

Then there are the idiots that perpetually need rescuing when Kilauea develops a leak. Or the idjits that take a tour boat right next to where a lava flow meets the ocean.

Dare say Icelanders have a more reasonable outlook on volcanoes. If it’s slowly leaking, go see. If it’s throwing massive chunks into the air and threatening to kill everyone, go make money off of idiot non-Icelanders who want to see the end of the world up close.

Then again, Iceland is one of the few places in the world where industrial-scale geothermal power is possible, so, well, Icelanders…

    • To be fair, no one expected Mt St Helens to partially collapse as she erupted. All of the sudden, there was a ‘shape charge’ pointed roughly north instead of up. Even a volcanologist was killed at what was supposed to be a safe spot.

  5. I wonder if this will affect The Blue Lagoon? And if I remember correctly, once you get outside Reykavik, there is only 1 highway, so it’s a gonna be clogged.

  6. All- Good comments, and yes, NAUTICAL miles…sailor over here…

The Blue Lagoon has not been affected, so far. WSF, both???

    Posted from my iPhone.

  7. Heh. And there’s the Ring of Fire, respect Mr. Cash and apologies Zappa.

Let’s hope Yellowstone doesn’t blow anytime soon.

  8. Closest I ever got to a Volcano was Vesuiveo, and was literally 50′, and that was in an AD5N Tow plane! Pilot says to me you want a closer look-see?, and before I could say no, he snap-rolled her right up side down ! So we passed over with the canopies wide open, and holding our breath at about 150 kts ! That was close enough for me! Went over it many times upright, ’cause it was right in the approach path to the decK!!
