New flooring is in!!!

The folks that showed up day before yesterday did most of the kitchen while two guys started on the planks. TWELVE work hours later, they were done!!!

What looks like tile is also laminate, 8mm thick as opposed to the planks which are 10mm thick. As some have said, it does wear and develop white spots. I hope that doesn’t happen, but I do have ‘spare’ tiles and boards if it comes to that.

The guys moved the heavy furniture, but now I’ve got 36 boxes of books to restock on the book cases. And extra stuff to take back for credit! Kudos to the installers from Midwest Flooring Installation! To their credit, they wasted very little material and did an excellent job on all 1200 feet of floor that they replaced.

Amazingly, the house is relatively square, and the planks were within a half-inch offset the length of the wall in the living room, which was about 25 feet long!

A question was posed yesterday as to why I didn’t go with an angled pattern. It was due to the amount of wastage you get when you do that. I had discussed it with the planner, and he said it would probably take another 200 sqft of planks.

I’m sleeping in this morning and hoping the Advil I took last night works…

  1. Looks like somebody ate the box of Oreos.

Great job!!! That looks like a room where a man can relax and do a little bit of thinking.

  2. Cool. It went quick. The variety of colors in the ‘planks’ give a lot of room for changing decor without having to worry about the floor clashing.

  3. We don’t have animals, well, only my wife and I, but the laminate floors in the addition see all our foot traffic going out back and they look great.
The only damage is in the kitchen, because any dropped knife lands point first.

We’d done the kitchen and addition floors with a carbide toothed saw, and when we decided to do the bathroom and two bedrooms, we bought a decent quality guillotine.
No dust generated, and it cut an amazing clean edge.

I suggest adding Voltaren Arthritis cream to your toolkit.
Advil for general aches and pains and the cream for spot treatment.

As said by other commenters, it looks great.

    I love the dynamite crates.
I think I would tell people, “I got these used, and the only thing wrong was the bottoms were wet.” 🙂

  4. Just got my front porch (enclosed) redone as of yesterday also. Much of the flooring in there was in pretty bad shape as it started as an unenclosed porch and then was just enclosed with no attention paid to the existing floor. Also, leaks on occasion.

Fun part, they were reinforcing the foundation as it was bouncy and uneven (1909 house) prior to redoing the porch (and kitchen to come later this year). Discovered that house was mostly supported on 4×4 posts with pieces of concrete rubble stuffed under them. Two story house. Ended up paying a bit more money to have them redo all the supports using 6×6 and adjustable concrete piers. $16k to have my front porch flooring replaced. (OK, not really, but I can feel the difference just walking around as the floor doesn’t flex and bounce under me like it used to.) Can’t wait until the kitchen and bath are done as well.

    • That sounds well worth it to make sure the house is solid.

  5. Looks good!
And yeah, it’s always nice to find out your house is actually square. I’ve found that the older houses are more likely to be so than many of the newer ones.

    • 1988 concrete block here in central Florida (very common). Definitely not square. How in the world do they get a concrete block out of square?!

  6. Looks great! I believe you’ll find the lighter color improves your overall outlook, as well. Amazing how that works. Enjoy!

  7. All- Thanks for the comments! I do appreciate them and no, all the oreos aren’t gone…LOL

Hereso- Ouch! Our oldest family house in Louisiana was built around 1880, foundations were 10-12 inch Cypress stumps. Floor joists were 10×10 cypress logs. 12 foot ceilings, 10 foot windows in what’s called a ‘dog run’ house. Open the windows and the doors on the center hall and you don’t need air conditioning!

Stuart- Thanks! Gift from some friends.

  8. Looks great! We’re In Process of having all the bathrooms and the laundry area redone. The laminate that was in there was 30+ years old, and was very hard to keep clean.
