And Sacramento is…strange!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen more Tesla cars in one place in my life! Ironically, the only two Tesla trucks I saw were on I-5, one going north, and the other south.
And I have never seen so many people tied to their phones, I mean literally ALL the time, including while walking, and being oblivious, walking out into traffic and not even noticing the cars… sigh
And the idjits in the hospital were just as bad, including the doctors, nurses, and whatever the hell the other 4000 people were. Even the visitors were locked into their phones.
When I went out to eat, the waitstaff, bartenders, and customers were ALL on their phones, to the point that the restaurant was almost silent! And expensive!!! Unless you do McDonalds or something like that, it’s a minimum of $25 for one, and a lot more for a group.
Interestingly, the Marriott hotels have apparently gone to charge cards only, no cash for anything! I had to go down the street to get change to use the washer and dryer!
Frankly, I’m glad to be back up in the ‘sticks’ in Lake County, although the grocery stores, even up here have a lot of stuff locked up, including the bathrooms. You literally have to get an employee to open the door for you, since they are on cipher locks!

glad you are “Endeavoring to Persevering” in the land of *Fruits and Nuts*(WHy do I keep hearing the voice of Chief Dan George), LOL, well anyway, you know why everything is locked up…to keep the thieving down and the urban outdoorsman from camping in the bathroom….the effects of the soft on crime policies of Cali…as a warning to the rest of the nation. Least you are spending it with kinfolks…..now persuading them to leave before your grandkids are trapped…..hope your daughter is doing well though.

It’s great that you can be there for your daughter and grandkids, but I could see how Cali would drive you nuts. Just over the border in Nevada things become a bit more reasonable.

What would happen if somebody snuck one of those cell phone blockers into the eatery? Better, faster, service? Venue-wide meltdown? Sounds like utube fodder to me!

Best wishes for patience and tolerance as you deal with Californians. It still depresses me to see a family at a meal in a restaurant and every single one of them has a screen in front of them–the kids with over-the-ear headphones for games or TikTok videos. Maybe they’re texting each other…

You’re not kidding about Teslas. I was there a couple of years ago visiting friends and my family graves.
On the way from the East Bay to SFO for my flight to Dallas I passed a three car accident. All three were Teslas.
Yep, another week and I’m outta here. Hopefully, she will be in good enough shape to resume normal (for here) life!

At my local CA Kaiser hospital, if you aren’t within phone tossing distance of an outside window, you aren’t getting cell coverage.
Supposedly they have some sort of internal wifi system. Most of the medical crew have the typical phone embedded into their hand, so there is something there…

Sounds not much different to San Diego county. Though at least the hotel I stayed in had a way to operate the laundry without downloading another stupid app. Everything is stupid expensive though.
I understand the attractions of Teslas and other EVs – gas in Socal a couple of months ago was significantly more expensive than here in Japan. I think electricity is slightly cheaper

Polimath- Had to go find a grocery store that would sell me a roll of quarters… sigh
We had a therapist working with our son who was addicted to his phone. He’d ask to use the bathroom and would be up there for 20 minutes. Then he’d come down – toilet didn’t flush, sink water wasn’t turned on – obviously, he was scrolling on his phone. After four sessions of this, I called the agency he worked for and got rid of him. Having a conversation with him was like pulling teeth.
There’s an outdoor cafe near my house, and I see couples on a date with their nose in their phones. What’s interesting is that we’ve been noticing that the generation who grew up on smart phones struggle with basic etiquette, eye contact, making small talk. It’s a sad state of affairs.
