Range report…

Well, unlike Keads, I can’t afford new ones/get good buys like he does…

“I” have to wait for the scratch and dent sale…

Picked this one up to add to the training stable, but to be honest I’m NOT happy with it.

DSC00026

Takedown/cleaning is fairly simple, typical of a S&W with the breakdown lever, except you can’t (or shouldn’t) take it all the way out, nor should you go over 90degrees with it…

DSC00025I cleaned/lubed the gun up pretty well, and finally got the guide rod back in the right way.  And that little recoil rod will ONLY go in one way…

At the range, it was not even close to being on, I was actually hitting 8-10 inches high and about the same left of the target at 15 yards.  Apparently this is NOT a new problem, and a number of others on the S&W forum have had the same issue (HERE).

I also had to screw the rear all the way down, and then move it damn near off the gun to the right to at least get the pistol to hit the 10 ring at 10 yards.  Didn’t even bother to try it at 15 yards again…

Also, about every other mag, it would NOT eject the first round out of the mag, for unknown reasons.  I’d cycle the action and it seemed to work okay for the rest of the mag. Called S&W on Tues, basically got told I should have cleaned and lubed it prior to shooting… Thanks a whole effing bunch for the help there folks… Hung up on them, I’ve got better things to do.

In summary-  Quality seems to be lacking, and it seems they are being slapped together with minimal attention to the ‘little’ things like actually aligning the sights.

I’d say put this on the do not buy list.

And I did pay my own $$ for the gun, so pound sand FCC…

Maybe I’ll use it for malfunction drills this weekend, it seems to be good for that!

  1. Whether you cleaned it or not would not affect the point of impact. Hold S&W accountable. On the other hand mind is a pleasure to shoot. Totally reliable and shoots to point of aim. (never made a sight adj.)

  2. Check out the Ruger SR 22. The ones I see on the range I work at seem to be reliable and moderately accurate.

  3. Hell Jim, I thought I had this weekend covered for a malf trainer bringing my our Sigg Mosquito and the wrong ammo. Maybe I will just feed it the good stuff afterall. See you at “Kid Shoot”.

  4. Woody- Based on what I’ve seen on line, you got lucky!

Roger- I’ve got a couple of Rugers (MK-II and MK-II) they are totally reliable!!!

    Jenn- That it is!

45ACP- Looking forward to seeing you again! 🙂

Opus- Oh well, I needs that training 😀

    WSF- Yeah, I know… sigh

  5. I’m thinking you meant FTC. But, who knows? All the alphabet soups are in the same pot, anyway. 🙂

To bad about the plastic gun.

  6. Hrm. Well, as much as that sucks for you, it’s *good* for me. Was looking for a 22 pistol for wife.gov to use to train, and this was on my short list.

Was on the list. No longer.

I had a Sig Mosquito at one point, and liked it. Maybe I’ll get her one of those.

  7. Years ago I had – and then sold – a Charter Arms Pathfinder revolver in .22 Mag. I’m still kicking myself for letting that sweet handgun go.

    Sorry you got a lemon.

  8. Jim, Sorry to hear this. Yeah the sights were a little off on them, but one is a range rental gun and we have had very little problems with all four. Hold S&W’s feet to the fire! What ammo you shooting? They seem to like CCI’s above all.

  9. I bought a compact S&W 9mm back in the `80s. It shot waay off. Since I could then pick up any number of issue 1911A1s and shoot the shit out of the center of the target, I figured it wasn’t me.

Doesn’t sound as though they’ve broken the code on them newfangled self-cockers.

  10. Which M&P was it? I’ve a M&P9C that I stash in my Tahoe. I’ve had no problems with it nor with the mags (mine have the finger extension.) It does hit a bit low at 7yds but it closer at 15yds (shot from a rest.)

All in all, I like my M&P much better than similar Glocks.

  11. A firearm review you would never see in Guns and Ammo, American Handgunner, American Rifleman.

  12. Guffaw- Yeah, that too! 🙂

Rev- I wish I’d bought a revolver rather than this thing…

Keads- Tried Remington, CCI, and one other one. The problem seemed to be ammo agnostic. I’ll try some more CCI this weekend at the shoot.

CM- Dunno if it’s that, or lousy QC, and apparently these are actually NOT made by S&W…

    Crucis- M&P22 (.22cal). I’m going back to Rugers and 1911s… Can’t shoot the damn S&W M&Ps anyway… 🙂

Gerry- Snerk- Y’all know I tell it like it is…

  13. Good luck tomorrow with the new shooters. I had a reason to get one of these. I will not whip out a Colt Match Target Woodsman .22 for students. This thing is not perfect by any means but its not a Umarex either. Colt chose them for the rail 1911 .22. I have the range one here. Its toast. Needs to go back.

Sorry I cannot make the shoot tomorrow but dang, y’all live far away!

  14. This is why all of my S&W pistols are made of metal, not plastic. The older semi autos are great pistols, the M&P don’t excite me at all.

  15. Keads- Good point, and THAT was the name I couldn’t remember,,, UMEREX… A couple of folks came up from Raleigh area, so at least y’all have ‘some’ representation! 🙂

TOTW- I got it for a training pistol, for classes… now, maybe not so much…
