Shutdown Day 16

Can- Kicked- One each…

President Obama early Thursday signed a short-term bill ending the partial government shutdown and raising the debt ceiling, capping one of the most bitter and brutal political fights in recent memory.

The bill cleared the House late Wednesday on a 285-144 vote, lifted over the finish line by a large chunk of Democrats. All House Democrats voted in favor of the bill and 87 Republicans did as well. 144 Republicans voted against it.

The Senate, where the plan originated, earlier voted 81-18 for the bill.

The result will come as a relief to furloughed federal workers, but leaves unfinished any long-term agreement over the nation’s fiscal future. As with past 11th-hour deals, this one kicks off the tough decisions to a separate committee and sets up another set of deadlines.

Lawmakers could again be at loggerheads by mid-January.

So in other words, jack shit got done other than some more pork, and the spigot is wide open…

And we’ll be doing this all over again in Jan…  I’m thinking that we need to fire everydamnone of those assholes in congress, put in term limits and start over…

This sculpture by Bob Clyatt pretty much says it all as far as I’m concerned!

Statement from the Sculptor- This series stemmed from my effort to explore, in a post-partisan manner, feelings about the long-term effects of significant government indebtedness on a group of Americans who are either not-yet-born or under-represented in the political discourse.  It arises out of my concern for all manner of sustainability issues.  Video of Fox News profile of this piece during the CutLog Art Fair in NYC, 2013.

Shutdown Day 16 — 8 Comments

  1. The American people have become like Sisyphus – being compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this action forever.

  2. Though I’m not happy with the results, the conservatives actually got more than most people think. Prior to October 1st, the senate wanted a clean CR. The House balked at that and the battle was on. 16 days later it appears that the GOP caved in to Dem wishes. What actually happened was that House saved the sequester cuts from earlier this year from being reversed. The Senate was preparing to reject the clean CR and demand that 10 Billion in spending cuts be eliminated. So, all the screaming and yelling actually did accomplish something. Beohner was heard saying that the GOP actually got about 98% of what they could have expected with Dem controlled senate and recalcitrant president. And from the looks of it, we won’t have to defund Obamacare, it will collapse under it’s own weight. The projected numbers say that there has to be at least 7 million people enrolled in Obamacare for it to float. I don’t see that happening, especially once the sticker shock spreads to all classes of people. It’s just going to be a lot more expensive to kill it this way.

  3. ABSOFREAKINGLUTELEY!!! Fire them all, set term limits and start all over! Bet your freakin ass! I’m in!

In addition: The ENTIRE current crop in the House, Senate, and White House are NEVER allowed to serve in government, in ANY capacity, EVER AGAIN!

No, I wasn’t affected by the slimdown. I just think they are all assholes and need to be removed permanently.

  4. Look what happened in Cyprus, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Argentina, Iceland, et.al. Think it can’t happen here? Prepare accordingly…

  5. Hey Old NFO;

You normally don’t use “potty” words so from the post, I gathered that you are as pissed and dismayed as I was/am. I just posted on my blog then read your posting. I am real disgusted by what has happened and I really wish that there would be term limits or something, or force the politicians to be part time, to see what life is like outside the beltway. The full time politicians are part of the problem, along with a clueless electorate and a fawning media.

  6. LL- Yep. Getting tired of it too…

Ray- True, but NOTHING was done on the debt…

    Rev- yep…

    N91- Agree!!!

Jim- Yeah, it’s coming… And probably in OUR lifetimes…

Bob- I try not to use foul language, but yes I’m PISSED…

    WSF- Not me… sigh
