Here comes the weather…

The standard joke in Texas is if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes and it’ll change…

It’s taking a little more than five minutes, but it was 65 yesterday morning, and this morning it’s 36. And it’s supposed to be snowing tomorrow…

The unpacking is finally making progress, but it’s amazing the ‘strays’ I’m finding. So far about 15 magazines, for various pistols and rifles, another five or six holsters, and 4 stray rounds…

And still haven’t found the other $%^&*$ shoe… Now running out of boxes. I guess I’ll have plenty of time while I wait out the snow. 🙂

Thanks to all that have offered ‘suggestions’ and commiserated with me on the moving. I was sitting here counting, and this is my 15th ‘major’ move, not counting 9 deployments over the years and numerous TAD trips up to 3-4 months at a time. All that means is that I’ve ‘downsized’ more times than not, but it’s still amazing what one accumulates, especially when you have two households in different states. Lots of stuff is duplicated, or more. Usually due to needing and not having, or it being at the ‘other’ house.

I cannot imagine how much one must accumulate over 15-20 years in the same place.

Well, time to get back to it. I’d like to actually have a livable house this week.

  1. Chuckling, your comments remind me of TDY and PCS “adventures”, I muddled through a few of those over the years. 🙂

You’ll find the shoe in the bottom of the last box you open, that’s how it works, usually. 😉

Good to read you’re geting settled in, and it will be a good thing if the windows are properly sealed, altough I would guess you checked that during the pre-buy inspection.

  2. The things that you’ve lost likely ended up in another dimension of space/time and somebody picked up that shoe and had a comment about it….on another blog. (Just thinking about a potential for your next book)

  3. Time to update your profile, no longer “back working again.” In my industry we have an abbreviation WOW that fits your current status better at least for today. It’s still hot down here.

  4. Grog- Oh hell yes, that would be my luck… sigh

    LL- Possible… 🙂

6Shots- Good point! It’s spitting snow now here.

  5. Yep. 30 yrs in this house.
I’m beginning to suspect I won’t be needing those TRS-80 and Commodore 64’s, but you never know.
If I had to decide to pack and unpack them, decision made.
    I think there’s a technical term: inertia.
That weather slogan? How many states besides Michigan think that it’s theirs’?

  6. Your crappy weather will be hitting Michigan about the time I need to drive Southern Belle to the airport. They predict freezing rain.

    Thanks a bunch!

Southern Belle may have a long trip back to Miami.

PS: It is good to have you back.

  7. I’m with you on moving–it’s the only way I’ve ever downsized. Counting in-town moves, I’ve done eight moves in the last twenty years. The only thing that ever was untouched were my books. The looks on the guys’ faces when 80 boxes had to be carried down a fourth floor walk-up was priceless.

I’m trying to downsize now but it’s tougher without ‘moving truck size’ motivation.

  8. Maybe the shoe is like socks in the wash. One totally vanishes only to be found two or three weeks later. Either that or another vanishes – never been quite sure which. Hope have a wonderful 2016 with your new home and a new book to come. Oh and please keep the snow in Texas.

  9. Yeah midwestern weather forcasts can all be summed up with the word “changeable”.

As for finding the second shoe remember Ben Franklin’s declaration that “Three moves equals one fire.”

  10. Don’t worry about the lost shoe…you said it was a dress shoe…now that you are retired you shouldn’t need it as often as you used to. 🙂

Yes, take a half hour to run to the store, get batteries for your flashlight, and some extra groceries and coffee, then you can just sit home and watch it snow.

I have to pick up a couple extra gallons of gas in case we need to use the generator…the weather guesser is talking 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice here in Western Michigan with gusty winds. Which means the drive in on Tuesday will not be fun.
Some folks are just getting their power back on today from this past week’s wind/rain storm. Haven’t seen snow at all yet.

Enjoy emptying out the last few boxes!!

    Suz

  11. Geez, you’ve been here for just one week and you’re already complaining about the weather. Wait until summer. You’ll be begging for rain and cool temps.. 🙂

  12. Micro-sized black hole wanders randomly around the planet sucking up pens, pencils, loose socks (and shoes), ID cards, nuts/bolts dropped in the engine compartment, and other associated stuff. Till you go looking for that particular item, and you wonder where it went. Only logical explanation. That and alternate universe theories.
Happy hunting and hope you’re safe after all those twisters. Time to think about volunteer ambulance or fire truck driver? Something good for your copious free time…

  13. I found out about that when we downsized from the castle to the hobbit hole. Cleaning out the garage and storage in the basement, I wondered what I was thinking at the time for saving a burnt out light bulb, various odd number of screws and/or nuts. Rusted cans of spray stuff (paint, pest control), half cans of anti-freeze, and stuff I don’t remember the use for and how I get them. 20 years in one place is a hoarders dream (and I didn’t even know I was one.)

  14. I flew over that “crappy weather” yesterday! Portland-Seattle-Atlanta-Roanoke. The stretch over the Midwest was as bumpy as I’ve seen in a while. Moving does make one “tidy up” the accumulation! Enjoy your NEW DIGS !!

  15. Your shoe is in the same dimension as the single socks that disappeared while in the dryer.

  16. Ed- LOL, probably everybody!

    ERJ- Thanks!

MC- Good point! And yes, when it’s $$ out of your pocket, downsizing IS important!

    Maggie/Suz/WN- Alternate universes work… sigh…

Odysseus- I hadn’t heard that, but it’s about right

Tim- Not ‘complaining’ per se, more like ‘commenting’… ;-D

CP- I’m like that with tools…

Woody- Yep, I can believe that!

  17. I cannot imagine how much one must accumulate over 15-20 years in the same place.

Double those time intervals. Mr. AOW and I have lived in the same house since 1972!

I started THE BIG CLEANOUT last summer. THE BIG CLEANOUT continues in fits and starts. I need a steam shovel!

  18. Sometimes it’s easier to just bulldoze the whole thing and start over.

  19. WSF- It’s TRUE! 🙂

AOW- 40 years??? Wow, I hate to think how big a project that is for you! Best wishes!

Roy- Nah, just bought it. Can’t afford to replace it already!!!

    Rick- LOL, agreed!

  20. Hey Old NFO;

I have started downsizing, we have lived here for 18 years….We have a lot of junk. Springtime will see the dumpsters full and the truckloads going to goodwill.
