It’ll never pas…

Oh wait…it did…

The House of Representatives has adopted a resolution that will eventually become a massive multi-trillion-dollar bill full of President Donald Trump’s priorities on the border, defense, energy and taxes.

In a major victory for House GOP leaders, the resolution passed in a 217 to 215 vote.

All Democrats voted against the measure, along with lone Republican rebel Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who was concerned about its effect on the national deficit.

The next step is now for the relevant House committees to meet and build their own proposals, which will eventually be returned into the framework and negotiated into a compromise deal with the Senate.

Full article, HERE from Fox News. And HERE from CNN.

Sooo, this went from it’ll never pass, too much (insert things here), too little (insert things here), depending on which side of the issue you were on…

To a ‘last minute’ victory for Mike Johnson and President Trump. At least the Dems were predictable, voting in lockstep as usual, against anything Trump is trying to do.

In other news, AP lost the first round in court, MSNBC is shedding anchors as their ratings continue to be the bottom of the barrel, and Comcast is looking at spinning them off from NBC. If they do, I ‘think’ they will cease to be within a year.

The left continues to be unable to mount a coherent response to anything Trump is doing, because he and the administration are so far inside their OODA loop that they simply cannot keep up with all the things hitting, much less trying to defend the various things DOGE seems to be uncovering daily!

And it does give ‘some’ of us hope that maybe, finally, there will be a shift back toward the center. Hell, we’d be happy with that!!!

RIP Lady…

Roberta Flack passed away yesterday.

She was one of the greats in the 1970s, able to sing R&B, jazz, folk, and pop, and did some beautiful music with a variety of partners. She was also a very talented pianist! This, to me, is one of her best if not her best song.

And she did it all with her pure voice. No fancy electronics to make her sound better, just going out there and singing…

May you rest in peace, you will be missed.

A little humor…

The following was found posted very very low on a refrigerator door:

Dear Dogs and Cats:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn’t help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on th e couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years – canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat’s butt. I cannot stress this enough.

I just took a leaflet out of my mailbox, informing me that I can have sex at  71. I’m so happy, because I live at number 73. So it’s not too far to walk home afterwards. And it’s the same side of the street. I don’t even have to cross the road!

Numbers and how they are attributed…

One statistic that the gun-control crowd loves to toss around is that gun violence is highest in deep red states and lowest in deep blue states. And statistically speaking, they’re correct. Per the CDC, the states with the highest per capita rates for gun murders are Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Alabama, and Missouri. The states with the lowest rates are Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Hawaii, New Jersey, and New York.

So what’s going on here? Is this simply a systemic problem of violent, gun totin’, insurrectionist inbreds barreling through the backwoods in their pickup trucks, yeehawing and looking for my-NAHR-uh-ties to shoot? Could the coastal elites, for once, have the facts on their side?

The CDC chart is HERE, the full article is HERE.

At the ten thousand foot view, it is correct, but when you drill down into specific demographics by location, the attribution falls apart. Take those locations out of the equation, and the state numbers drop significantly.

In a slight digression, Ammo.com has done a deep dive into murders by weapon type, HERE. In Mississippi, 91% of homicides are by guns. Look at Lenoir Co, and I’ll be it is right at 100%.

Just like Chicago numbers are ignored by the MSM, and Baltimore, and certain sections of DC…

Yes, there are huge problems, no question. WAY too many people die by homicide, but guns are just ONE of the ways murder is committed. Allowing murders to walk free, illegals who ran here to get away from a murder charge in their home countries, etc. all play into this, as does blaming teh ‘gun’ and never the perpetrator for the action. The media also selectively ‘covers’ murders as we all know. If they ‘fit’ the agenda, they get coverage, if they don’t they are buried quickly, with justice and actual reporting taking a back seat to agenda.

Another thing I believe plays into it is the lack of family structure, religion, and taking responsibility for one’s actions. All of those things are the anathema of the left/dems and their base proves that almost daily. Also, the lack of justice/punishment means there is no deterrent to repeating those actions.

The education system is not blameless either, with the ‘limitations’ placed on discipline of students, lack of school resource officers, and the antipathy of many educators when it comes to stopping students from acting out.

For example my granddaughter age 7, was harassed and choked by another female in the class more than once. This girl also threatened other students, including with teacher’s scissors. NOTHING was done by the teacher or the school administration until my daughter filed a police report on it, and at that point, my granddaughter was (according to the school principal) determined to be the instigator! Only after another child and her mother stepped forward, was anything done… Apparently, they simply moved the offender to another school.

Things need to change, but I believe the first thing that has to happen is perpetrators are made to take responsibility for their actions and have to be punished for those actions, regardless of ethnicity, country of origin, or religious preference. And these punishments have to act as a deterrent to them and their ilk ever doing those things again. The next thing is allowing/requiring parents to be actively involved in raising their children, preferably in a 2 parent household, hopefully with at least some religious context, and getting the school system out of raising the children. Their job is education!

It will take a least a generation for even those simple steps…what comes next???

Heads are rolling at DOD…

Well, GEN C.Q. Brown is gone, and looks like ADM Lisa Franchetti is next.

President Donald Trump on Friday night nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“General Caine is an accomplished pilot, national security expert, successful entrepreneur, and a ‘warfighter’ with significant interagency and special operations experience,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social announcing the nomination.

Trump said during his first term, the three-star lieutenant general was “instrumental” in the “complete annihilation” of the ISIS caliphate.

Trump said despite Caine “being highly qualified and respected,” he was “passed over for promotion by Sleepy Joe Biden.”

“But not anymore! Alongside Secretary Pete Hegseth, General Caine and our military will restore peace through strength, put America First, and rebuild our military,” Trump wrote. “Finally, I have also directed Secretary Hegseth to solicit nominations for five additional high level positions, which will be announced soon.”

Full article, HERE from Fox News.

There have been a number of questions over the nomination of Brown, but his nomination ‘seemed’ to hinge on his buy in to the DEI philosophy put forward by the Biden administration. He pushed that and the race agenda in his speeches, and the changes he’d made as the Chief of Staff for the Air Force, including curriculum changes at the Air Force Academy.

Franchetti was also a puzzler, as a lot of folks I knew thought Kilby would have been named as the next CNO. We wondered if she was one of Biden’s ‘checks in the block’ of putting a woman in a power position (nothing against her or her career).

Anyhoo, there are definitely changes afoot at DOD, with a new focus and new leadership is one step in that process. The other thing that needs to be done is to weed out those who cling to power or rank as their ‘due’ rather than committing to the revised goals and impetus on the warfighter, rather than the political infighting in DC.

The other thing I’m wondering about is what will happen with the Marine ‘Vision 2030’ plan. The few Marines I talked to hated the idea of losing their tanks and possibly their heavy artillery.

Interesting…

What a little ‘sunshine’ does to problems…

Aurora, Colorado’s top police official announced Wednesday that efforts to cleanup various apartment complexes plagued by Venezuelan gang members of Tren de Aragua (TdA), and bad management pushed the city to help about 85 families or individuals relocate to areas where they could not be revictimized.

Aurora Police Department Chief Todd Chamberlain gave an update on the progress made across the city, including his criminal nuisance closure order that resulted in the shutdown of the Edge at Lowry.

Last month, city Judge Shawn Day ruled that the Edge at Lowry apartment complex must temporarily close due to an “immediate threat to public safety.”

Full article, HERE from Fox News.

Apparently, the media coverage (what a surprise), caused Aurora to actually do something good for a change to protect the migrants that were living in that complex.

Now the question is, how many MORE places are in the same shape that we’ve never heard about?

Bad managers, intimidation , ‘extorting’ money in the form of high rent, and lack of maintenance isn’t really surprising considering how many of those folks were/are living paycheck to paycheck, and eating beans and rice while they tried to stay ahead of the bills.

While the apartments ‘may’ have been better than what they had, I’m pretty sure none of us would have accepted the lack of maintenance or lack of security that appears to have been the norm rather than the exception there.

And now apparently Polis et al are saying the ‘state’ will help. Soooo, it’s no longer something that was untrue and dreamed up by folks.

Gotta love sunlight when it also causes the roaches to scramble… 🙂

Book promo…

First up is Alma TC Boykin with the 10th novel in her Merchants and Empire series- Threads of Empire

As always, click on the cover for the Amazon link!

The blurb-

“Return with coin or not at all!”

Dagnija Modrisdatter brought nothing but bad fortune to her family, or so they believed. When a merchant offered to hire her as spinster and weaver, her father sent her off.

Adrians Eckelbert searched for the master weaver who made ornate belts. He found her on a remote land-tongue, and brought her back to Rhonari.

Dagnija discovers a different world, one filled with possibilities she had never dared to even dream of. But she must learn to navigate the shoals of Rhonari, seat of the trade lords of the Northern Empire. Spinning comes easily to her hand. Speaking for herself and balancing trade law and family duty? Far harder.

Our friend Larry Correia has finished his Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series-  Heart of the Mountain

The blurb-

What happens after the War of the Gods?

The answer lies in the Heart of the Mountain . . .

Ashok Vadal was chosen by a powerful weapon to be its bearer. As a Protector, an elite roving law-enforcer, his path to leader of the Sons of the Black Sword has been anything but straight.

Thera Vane, a child of privilege, has become the reluctant prophet of an illegal and forgotten god—whose prophecies are proving all too correct, if frustratingly unclear about the war between demon and man.

Ashok’s erstwhile sword brother, Lord Protector Devedas, was meant to be a puppet king, but he and his wife, a court scholar, have other plans. And possibly even access to the lore that will let them triumph.

Grand Inquisitor Omand Vokkan is a man of ambition. He’s set in motion all that was necessary to destroy the current order and install Lord Protector Devedas as a tyrant. But Vokkan has a vision beyond control of the continent. He would challenge even the gods . . .

It seems the time of prophecy and the Age of Law is over: it is time the prophecies will be fulfilled.

And last but not least, Raconteur Press has a new anthology Giant Squeeing Robots

The blurb-

Just because they’re cute doesn’t mean they can’t be dangerous. Imagine tamagotchis gone bad, giant robots with the fashion sense and self-control of a toddler. Or maybe these robots just love you and want to scoop you up and hug you and squeeze you and call you George. Have fun! Play! And remember, these robots can go hypersonic.
I can highly recommend all three! It’s too cold to be outside, so grab a book, curl up and read!!!

Homework…

Kevin handed out an assignment as part of his class, 1000 words with the following cue- Looking at Paris in this light.

I wasn’t sure what to do with that cue, and kicked a couple of different ideas around before I came up with what you’ll read below. I know it probably wasn’t what he was expecting, but like I’ve said, my muse is STRANGE, and spends a lot of time in the bar drunk… But I took it as a challenge, and wrote exactly 1000 words!

Looking at Paris in this light, Johnnie could not believe that half the city was destroyed. It was a beautiful sunset, painting the Seine and 6th Arrondissement in mauves and pinks, shading to gold, thanks to the smoke from the burning buildings across the river. He looked to his right, seeing the remains of Notre Dame and smelled the wood along with what smelled like overdone pork. In his mind, he knew what it really was, but refused to admit it.

Grabbing Lisa’s hand he said, “Com’on, sis. We need to get back to Citadines Saint-Germain-des-Prés before it gets dark.”

She looked up at him and whined, “Johnnie, I’m hungry. Can we get some pork chops that aren’t burnt?”

He almost threw up, but replied, “Let’s go check that restaurant we passed earlier. Maybe there is something left in it.” He led her back down Rue Mazarene, and into the little Italian restaurant he’d seen.

Lisa looked around as they walked in, ignoring the bodies on the floor and the smell. How the hell can a seven-year-old ignore the bodies and the smell? He wondered, as Lisa broke away and scrambled up on the counter, picking up a loaf of bread. “I found bread,” she crowed as Johnnie moved carefully into the kitchen. It was getting dark, but there was enough light to make out the fridges, freezers, and cooking line, but he was looking for the pantry. Another door led into it, and he turned on his flashlight, quickly flashed it around, and spotted both salamis and two prosciutto hams.

He took them down, he stuffed them in his backpack, and turned off his flashlight, saving the batteries. “Lisa, come here!” She walked cautiously into the pantry. “Just to your right, there a quarter wheel of cheese, right at your eye level.”

She flicked on her flashlight and giggled. “Oh, cheese!” She slipped her backpack off, pulled the bread out, put the cheese on the bottom, and slid the bread back on top. She pulled her backpack on and grasped his hand. “We go home now?”

“Yes, we are going back to Citadines Saint-Germain-des-Prés.” Leading her back through the restaurant and out into the middle of the street, he turned toward the hotel.

“Maybe mom and dad will be there when we get back,” Lisa said sing-songed softly.

Johnnie shivered at the tone of her voice, since she said the same thing every day since they got out of the catacombs. Johnnie had accepted the fact that they were dead, even if he didn’t know where their bodies were.

He thought back to the previous Saturday, when their dad had said, “Johnnie, you’re fourteen and a boy scout. You need to learn about helping and leading people and I can sign off on your citizenship merit badge work if you take Lisa with you on the catacomb tour. She she saw them on the internet and…it fascinated her. Your mother and I are going to the Louvre, which is not the place for a seven-year-old.”

Johnnie rolled his eyes, but said, “Okay, dad.”

“And don’t get separated.”

“I won’t lose her. I’ll take the tether with me.”

His father nodded, adding, “And make sure she wears it!”

Johnnie asked, “Can mom tell her? She will listen to mom, me, not so much.”

Two hours later, a hotel car dropped Johnnie and Lisa at the entrance to the Catacombs and the driver said, “I will pick you up in three hours at the exit. It is far away from here. Look for this car, please.”

Johnnie nodded. “Yes, sir. I will.” Holding up his cell phone, he said, “I also have the hotel number on my phone.”

The driver said, “Bien,” then drove away.

Lisa pulled on the tether, “Johnnie, let’s go, the tour is about to start! I wanna see this!”

“Okay, okay, I’ve got to pay first. Just hold your horses, brat.” He led her over to the window, paid for two tours, and they joined the tour just as it started. He passed her one of the translators and hung the other one around his neck, as they descended into the Paris underground.

An hour later, Johnnie was getting bored with the constant skulls, descriptions of the various ossuary descriptions, and the lineage of certain families, and Lisa constantly tugging on the tether, when they felt a hard thump through the ground, followed by a rumble, and the lights going out.

He automatically reached out and grabbed Lisa by the arm, hissed, “Stay next to me and be quiet,” as others raised their voices. He also noticed the translator no longer worked and was glad he had a basic understanding of French. The tour guide was trying to calm everyone, and trying to call on the radio, but she wasn’t getting an answer. She finally said, “We will evacuate to the exit. That is the closest point to get to the surface. I am sorry. Please follow me.”

An hour later, they got to the steps to the exit, only to find it blocked by debris. The tour guide kept trying the radio, mumbling to herself as she walked in circles. Johnnie kept Lisa calm until she sat down and finally went to sleep. Hours later, the men pushed him up and he could finally see dim light over the top of the pile of debris that blocked the last steps, and he wiggled through it, as it got dark. Digging out his phone, he was surprised it had no signal. He started pulling debris up, he finally got a big enough hole for the men to squeeze out and Johnnie went back down to lead the women and Lisa out as they moved more debris.

Suddenly, he felt something shaking him, and he looked up in confusion. “Dad?”

“Time to wake up, we’re ready to go on the catacombs tour. You must have been having a bad dream, the way you were flopping around and moaning.”

FenCon AAR…

Welp, my first con of the year is in the books. First, kudos to Todd and the crew who did an excellent job of getting everything together. There were a few minor issues, but no con is ever perfect.

The Doubletree wasn’t bad, but the lack of food service at lunch was…not fun. We were pretty much forced to go offsite to find something, but it worked for the size of the con. Spaces were adequate, and Todd and the crew had them properly mic’ed so everyone could hear the speakers. The silent auction had not completed before I left, so I’m not sure how well then did, but the dealer’s room looked like it was getting pretty good business.

I took Kevin Ikenberry’s writing class (yes, it had homework), and enjoyed it. Kevin is a good instructor, and most of all is PATIENT with the questions… 🙂

There were various writers doing readings all weekend, so folks got a chance to hear their favorites and maybe got a chance to chat with them.

The con was well organized for those of us on panels, with adequate bio breaks!!! YAY! There were 15 panels on Friday, with a wide selection of subjects. We did Firearms for Writers, with Jack Campbell, RJ. Hanson, Ian McMurtrie, Alex Wakal, and for my sins, me as moderator…

We dispelled a few myths, I hope, talked about the difference between clips and magazines (with examples), and talked about how to research weapons for writing.

Saturday was 40+ panels, heavy on the science aspects, and some…odd panels…

Raconteur Press had a panel in the morning, announcing that John Van Stry would be publishing a new series with them, and Wally Waltner will be doing a new series with them also.

We did the obligatory No S**t There I was panel late Saturday night, and it was well received. Jack Campbell, RJ Henson, Alex Waikel, and I got stuck moderating again… sigh…

There were another 29 panels on Sunday, and we got to kick it off with a panel SpaceX vs The Government. Myself, Bill Frank from NASA Houston, who is a chief training officer, and Ken Ruffin, president of the National Space Society of North Texas (NSS-NT) spent an hour discussing the various iterations of ‘teams’, companies, and one offs that have gotten us to where we are today. And we didn’t get into politics even once!!!

That was followed by a panel Under Pressure: Conquering Oceans Beyond Earth. We had the same panelists, plus William Ledbetter who works in the aerospace industry, in addition to writing hard SF. And yes, I was the moderator again (Are you sensing a trend here like I am?). Lots of technical discussion, some of the ‘how to’ that is on the horizon, and a healthy dose of beats the hell out of me… LOL

Got a chance to see a lot of the usual suspects, and it was great to see them, and no, I’m not trying to name everybody, because I’ll sure as hell miss a bunch. I will say it was a real pleasure to finally meet Jack Campbell and spend a bit of time chatting with him, and spend time with ‘our’ crowd, Ian, Jonna, Cedar, Ted/Laura, Lisa, Peter/Dot, Alex/Liota, Monalisa/Rick, Alyssa, Tully, Julie Frost, Mike, Nic, and Wally/Mechelle.

You can go HERE and get bios on the folks and others from the FenCon site.

I bailed early due to back issues, so I was home before closing ceremonies, but it was a good con, and I did enjoy it in spite of my back.

Off to FenCon…

I’ll be out for a few days at FenCon in Dallas, HERE.

If you’re attending, stop by and say hi! Below are my panels I’m on and where they will be.
