As we age…

This is what all of us 70+ year olds, and those yet-to-be, have to look forward to!!

This is something that happened at an assisted living center.  The people who lived there had small apartments but they all ate at a central cafeteria. One morning one of the residents didn’t show up for breakfast so my wife went upstairs and knocked on his door to see if everything was OK. She could hear him through the door and he said that he was running late and would be down shortly, so she went back to the dining area.

An hour later he still hadn’t arrived so she went back up towards his room but found him on the stairs. He was coming down the stairs but was having a real hard time. He had a death grip on the hand rail and seemed to have trouble getting his legs to work right.

She told him she was going to call an ambulance but he told her no, he wasn’t in any pain and just wanted to have his breakfast. So she helped him the rest of the way down the stairs and he had his breakfast.

When he tried to return to his room he was completely unable to get up even the first stair step so they called an ambulance for him.

A couple hours later she called the hospital to see how he was doing.

The receptionist there said he was fine, he just had both of his legs in one side of his boxer shorts.

I am sending this to my children so that they don’t sell the house before they know all the facts.

Snort…

NOT far from the truth…

DoD’s Twelve Days of Christmas

The President has authorized the Department of Defense to assist Santa with the Twelve Days of Christmas.

Status of acquisitions follows:

Day 1- Partridge in a Pear Tree: The Army and Air Force are in the process of deciding whose area of responsibility Day 1 falls under. Since the partridge is a bird, the Air Force believes it should have the lead. The Army, however, feels trees are part of the land component command’s area of responsibility. After three months of discussion and repeated OpsDeps tank sessions, a $1M study has been commissioned to decide who should lead this joint program.

Day 2 – Two Turtle Doves: Since doves are birds, the Air Force claims responsibility. However, turtles are amphibious, so the Navy-Marine Corps team feels it should take the lead. Initial studies have shown that turtles and doves may have interoperability problems. Terms of reference are being coordinated for a four-year, $10M DARPA study.

Day 3 – Three French Hens: At State Department instigation, the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has blocked off-shore purchase of hens, from the French or anyone else. A $6M program is being developed to find an acceptable domestic alternative.

Day 4 – Four Calling Birds: Source selection has been completed, with the contract awarded to AT&T. However, the award is being challenged by a small, disadvantaged business.

Day 5 – Five Golden Rings: No available rings meet MILSPEC for gold plating. A three-year, $5M accelerated development program has been initiated.

Day 6 – Six Geese a-Laying: The six geese have been acquired. However, the shells of their eggs seem to be very fragile. It might have been a mistake to build the production facility on a nuclear waste dump at former Air Force base that was closed under BRAC.

Day 7 – Seven Swans a-Swimming: Fourteen swans have been killed trying to get through the Navy SEAL training program. The program has been put on hold while the training procedures are reviewed to determine why the washout rate is so high.

Day 8 – Eight Maids a-Milking: The entire class of maids a milking training program at Aberdeen is involved in a sexual harassment suit against the Army. The program has been put on hold pending resolution of the lawsuit.

Day 9 – Nine Ladies Dancing: Recruitment of the ladies dancing has been halted by a lawsuit from the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Association.” Members claim they have a right to dance and wear women’s clothing as long as they’re off duty.

Day 10 – Ten Lords a-Leaping: The ten lords have been abducted by terrorists. Congress has approved $2M in funding to conduct a rescue operation. Army Special Forces and a USMC MEU(SOC) are conducting a “NEO-off” competition for the right to rescue.

Day 11 – Eleven Pipers Piping: The pipe contractor delivered the pipes on time. However, he thought DoD wanted smoking pipes. DoD lost the claim due to defective specifications. A $22M dollar retrofit program is in process to bring the pipes into spec.

Day 12 – Twelve Drummers Drumming: Due to cutbacks only six billets are available for drumming drummers. DoD is in the process of coordinating an RFP to obtain the six additional drummers by outsourcing; however, funds will not be available until FY 25. As a result of the above-mentioned programmatic delays, and due to a high OPTEMPO that requires diversion of modernization funds to support current readiness, Christmas is hereby postponed until further notice.

A Different Kind Of Christmas Poem…

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,

I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.

My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,

My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,

Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,

Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,

Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.

In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,

So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,

But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,

And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,

A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,

Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.

Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,

Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

“What are you doing?” I asked without fear,

“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!

Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,

You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,

Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts…

To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light

Then he sighed and he said, “It’s really all right, I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.

“It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,

That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me,

I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ‘ Pearl on a day in December,”

Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.”

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘ Nam ‘,

And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,

But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.”

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,

The red, white, and blue… an American flag.

“I can live through the cold and the being alone,

Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,

I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,

Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..

Who stand at the front against any and all,

To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”

“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,

Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”

“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,

“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,

For being away from your wife and your son.”

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,

“Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone,

To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,

To know you remember we fought and we bled.

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,

That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”

Interesting…

VERY interesting… Russia is using the Griner swap as propaganda.

What a surprise! NOT!

Russian state television, which is notorious for propaganda, discussed the exchange, mocking the United States for swapping Griner instead of Whelan.

This didn’t do anything to enhance our standing in the world view, and I’m afraid it painted targets on any ‘high value’ Americans travelling internationally.

TBT…

Cars and Christmas…

Sigh… $3795 back then, $100,000 and up today…

If you had every car in that ad, you would easily be sitting on a half million dollars worth of vehicles.

Tis the season…

For those ‘little’ company Christmas parties…

Stole this from one of my military groups, and I’m betting ANYBODY that was in the military will be cringing at some of them.

But, these days, they also apply to those company parties, especially if there are woke elements out there!

Feel free to replace the military structure with your company structure, and I’ll bet it still holds true… LOL

The blurb-

Fresh out of college with his Ship Engineer 3rd-Class certificate, Dave Walker’s only thought is to try to find a berth on a corporate ship plying the trade routes between the many habs, orbitals, and moons in the Solar System. The problem for Dave, however, isn’t his straight C average; it’s that his stepfather, a powerful Earth Senator he’s never met, now wants him dead.

Forced to take the first berth he can find, Dave ends up on the Iowa Hill, an old tramp freighter running with a minimal crew and nearing the end of its useful life, plying the routes that the corporations ignore and visiting the kinds of places that the folks on Earth pretend don’t exist.

Between the assassins, the criminals, and the pirates he needs to deal with, Dave is discovering that there are a lot of things out there that he still needs to learn.

But there’s one hard lesson he learned long ago that he’s being forced to remember: how to be ruthless.

The state of the writer…

Is reflective…

I started writing in 2014, have published 12 novels and a few short stories and novellas and been in a few anthologies.

I’m not hugely successful, I don’t write fast, and I try to get the ‘details’ right. Oh, and more than once I’ve been told I’m a storyteller, not a writer. I’m not getting rich off the books, no ‘deals’ in progress, no awards prestigious or otherwise, or anything else, but I do make a few bucks each month.

So be it. I got curious and looked at how many reviews I had sitting on Amazon, and it’s a little over 3000. I know that’s chump change compared to a ‘real’ author, but I’ll take them all with thanks! My average across all the books, etc. is 4.6 out of 5 stars, so there must be a ‘few’ folks out there that like what I write and the stories I try to tell.

What I am thankful for are the folks that support me, our Saturday supper crowd, the folks that comment on the snippets I post, and the ‘usual suspects’ that alpha/beta read, giving me HONEST feedback, my editor, and my cover artist.

And I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the experts I’ve been able to find in various areas that help me get those details right… Even if they never let me forget some of my ‘better’ screw ups… Sigh…

1/4 of the way through the next Rimworld, working on it, a short story, and pulling together an anthology of twisted tropes just for fun. I like anthologies because it gives me a chance to get other authors out there/in front of readers that might like their work, or at least give it a chance.

So I’m staying busy. Actually, I’m behind by about three months, but that’s on me because I took on some things that I knew were going to be time consuming, but needed to be done for various reasons.

I’m hoping to have the next Rimworld out early next year, and it will be followed by another Bell Chronicles. The reason I do that is that when I finished The Grey Man series, I lost quite a few readers that don’t read science fiction, so I started the western series to try to get some of them back and why I’m alternating book series.

And of course I owe a big THANK YOU to the readers out there who spend their precious $$ on my brain dribbles and post actual honest reviews! Without y’all, I’d be one of those ‘aspiring’ writers that are dying of ‘exposure’ but not getting any Benjamins… Which is really what counts.

Oopsie…again…

Apparently NBC was once again ahead of the administration… First it was the Paul Pelosi story, and yesterday, the Griner release story…

Need more confirmation that our “news agencies” are actually propaganda arms for the Leftist establishment? Here you go: Old Joe Biden’s handlers have traded Hizballah-linked terrorist arms dealer Viktor Bout to Russia for America-hating WNBA player Brittney Griner, which is bad enough in itself, as Bout could end up killing Americans in large numbers. Even worse is the fact that the administration could have brought former Marine Paul Whelan out of Russian prison, but opted for Griner instead. The White House denies that it had this choice, but an initial NBC News report confirmed it. Soon afterward, however, the NBC report was quietly revised to reflect the official line.

Full article, HERE from PJ Media.

One can only wonder how many reporters NBC will be ghosting for THIS ‘screw up’ of reporting the truth…

And apparently Griner shook hands with Bout in Saudi when they were exchanged… This just gets better and better…

Any bets on whether she will kneel the first time the National Anthem is played???
