Debate… My take…

FWIW…

To put it mildly, it went rodeo, early and often… Sigh…

Biden called Trump a liar out of the box. Trump was basically debating Wallace rather than Biden.

Trump: Why did the mayor of Moscow give your family $3.5M? Biden: that is not true totally discredited

“Will you shut up, man?” Biden is getting flustered.

Biden called Trump a racist.

Biden accuses Trump of pouring gasoline on the fire of riots! Wow…

I can’t watch anymore of this BS… sigh…

Tales is almost ready!!!

The interior is completed, and we have a cover!!!

Now comes the waiting for Amazon to do their thing, then get proof copies and check those line/line, page/page, and Tina to sign off on the cover meeting her standards for colors/etc.

At this point, I’m guessing probably three weeks to jump through all the hoops!

Meanwhile, here are the Authors and their Amazon links! Take a look at what they write, and you might find something(s) of interest to keep you busy until the anthology comes out!

It’s the ‘little things’…

18th century sailcraft… and attention to detail…

There is a lanyard sewn into the edges of the sail, and another then sewn into the corner of the sail to hold the metal eye in place for the attached lanyard to connect to either the cross piece, or run down to the winch or lower cross piece depending on the specific sail.

The level of detail above, might seem to be more ‘artistic’, but is, in fact, necessary to keep the sail from ripping the lanyard out under stress. Depending on the size of the sail, and its use, it could have a dry weight of up to a TON, and take more tons of pressure to move a large ship!!!

Sailmaking was a mix of art and science, and many of the ships of the line had crews of sailmakers as part of the crew. Article HERE.

One to remember for Christmas…

For those that HATE the Elf on the Shelf BS…

And scare the hell out of the kids as an added benefit, if so desired… LOL

And gotta love this Pub commercial out of Texas. NOT your daddy’s GOP!!!

Crenshaw is definitely taking advertising to the next level for this team!

Logical fallacy…

Soooo, Newsome did the ‘deed’…

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday signed an executive order to ban gas-powered cars and trucks in California by 2035, a move he said would cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than a third.

Full article, HERE.

And there’s this… The proposed rule would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market. But it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state of nearly 40 million people.

Now if you believe that, I’ve got this bridge…

In the late 90s, there was a move afoot, led by Gray Davis, in Cali to ban ANY vehicle older than 5 years old, specifically targeting older non-OBD cars/trucks. That was overcome by SEMA and the car clubs in SOCAL banding together to get enough signatures to get it on the ballot and scare the legislature into backing off on that. This time around, they will make it happen unless there is a similar push from the local folks.

Now, let’s look at the power issue..

HERE is a good link on charging an electric car.

Depending on how old your house is, you may have one of the following:

  • 30 Ampere. 30 ampere service has become quite a rarity, as this was mostly early homes. A 30 ampere service would only be of 120 volt capability. Those rare cases where 30 ampere service is found would be small older homes that have been lived in by the same family or person for a period of generations, and the need for modernization or upgrade has not presented itself. This service is considered inadequate for modern living.
  • 60 Ampere. This is typically the lowest capacity for a 120/240 volt service. This capacity is considered to be marginal at best for modern living. Quite often, 60 ampere service also includes the presence of an old fuse panel, as opposed to the more modern circuit breaker panel.
  • 100 Ampere. A large number of existing average size homes have 100 ampere capacity electric services. Average size homes with gas or oil heating systems and hot water systems generally do not need electric service of greater than 100 amperes capacity. Of course, this can also depend on the electrical usage of the occupants, and the use of other electrical appliances.
  • 150 Amperes. Common practice is such that this has become the typical minimum that might be installed in modern construction for a single family home.
  • 200 Amperes. This is becoming the norm for modern single family residential construction. In many instances it is not a necessity, but it is installed with new construction.

So, you have a 100 amp capacity, and you have two electric vehicles. That means 2 more 30 or 40 amp dedicated circuits. What do you give up? Fridge? AC at night? Or do you pay $1-3000 to upgrade your service, plus the cost of a charger or chargers?

And all your neighbors are doing the same thing…

How long will it take to get to the head of the line? And what are PG&E, SMUD, and the other power suppliers going to do? They can’t provide needed power now, much less for 18 MILLION electric cars and trucks (current estimate of vehicles in California).

Oh, and one other thing… Newsome will be long gone, as will most if not all of the legislature when this goes into effect…

TBT…

Sonobuoys were the main way we tracked subs back in the day. I really hate to think how many TONS of those damn things I handled, one at a time, over the years…

Weighing 15 to 39 lbs, we carried 80+ of them on every mission. The ‘fun’ was getting them loaded, especially if the weather wasn’t great. This pic shows the ordie pushing a buoy into the external launch tube. In the rain… What you don’t see is the other folks standing off to the left with the buoy cart, out IN the rain, no hats, no rain gear, water running down the backs of their necks, checking each buoy for all its settings before handing it to him to be shoved into a specific tube. On a good day, this took, give or take, a half hour. On a bad day, it could easily run an hour. THEN you have to hump another 30+ up the stairs on the left into the interior racks. By the time you got in the airplane, you were soaking wet and not in a good mood… Trust me on that… And we did it day after day!

Note that each chute has a specific letter/number combination. Once inside, all of those buoys then had to be typed into the onboard computer so they could be deployed when required. And if you ever made a mistake, there was hell to pay! Trying to find the ‘missing’ buoy was fun… Especially if it wasn’t supposed to be a pinger, and it started pinging on the ‘wrong’ target… 😉

Oh, and this was actually a nice day, compared to some; where we were, we’ve loaded in a monsoon, in snow storms, and in 100+ degree heat.

Finally!!!

The Navy (and all services) are still paying the price for sequestration under Obama…

It has been five years since the attack submarine Boise returned from its last patrol, and this whole time she has been waiting on some loving care and attention in the shipyards.

Full article, HERE.

Things like this crap are why the ships/crews/subs/aircraft are beat to crap, tired, and frustrated. When you can’t get maintenance done, this has a rolling impact on scheduling as ‘somebody’ has to pick up the slack and take that cruise. There was a big push under Bush to get the OPTEMPO/PERSTEMPO mismatch under control, and that was starting to work until sequestration hit.

Can you imagine being stationed on a sub that can’t go anywhere??? FOR FIVE YEARS??? While watching other crews have to do your job?

We need an effective, efficient military now more than ever, with the Russians becoming more active again, the Chinese expansion, etc.

It’s gotten so bad in the ASW community, that the Navy has had to do ‘exercises’ to find out just how much capability has been lost…

As U.S. Navy brass continues to sound the alarm about Russian submarine activity in the North Atlantic, the sea service kicked off an exercise this week to hone the sort of anti-sub warfare skills that fell by the wayside in the post-9/11 world.

An interesting perspective…

Ammo.com has a new post up that makes one think…

While there are few perfect analogs to be found anywhere in world history, there are parallels between the contemporary domestic political situation in the United States and the period immediately before and during the Spanish Civil War. And while the situation in the United States might play out in a much similar way to the Spanish Civil War, it is worth noting that our previous Civil War was the bloodiest in human history. There is little doubt that a Second American Civil War would not be significantly more destructive.

Full article, HERE.

They do raise some interesting points and it’s worth thinking about the parallels. I, for one, hope we DO NOT end up in this kind of situation. I hope…

Sigh…

Ruth Bader Ginsburg died last week, a victim of cancer. She wasn’t dead an hour before the hissy fits started…

For God’s sakes people, give the woman’s family the dignity to quietly grieve and to bury her before you start dancing on the damn body!

I may not have liked a lot of her decisions, but I always respected her as a jurist who followed her beliefs and did what she thought was right on the highest bench. You have to honor her for that.

Kudos to Michael Ramirez for this ‘toon… Well done, sir!
