Here we go again…

Sigh…

They finally did it. The Biden Administration has declared gun violence a public health crisis. The question many of us in the gun community are asking, why now, when the Biden administration has been touting (and taking credit for) the declining rates of violent crime across the country?

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy labeled gun violence as a public health crisis and called it “the leading cause of death among children and teenagers”. This declaration is a blatant overreach and a direct threat to the Second Amendment. As a staunch defender of the right to bear arms, this advisory is deeply troubling for several reasons.

Full article, HERE from Bearing Arms.

This has been an ongoing battle for literally years, with the dems, medical community, et al pushing their anti-gun agenda any way they could.

After yesterday’s announcement by SCOTUS that effectively .gov CAN censor media at their whim, I think this could bode ill for the Second Amendment in the long term.

Once again, they did not let the truth get in the way of their lies, especially the death rates. I ‘love’ how their definition of ‘children’ keeps changing, from 0-17 to now with this one, 0-19, so they can bring in the gangbanger deaths to get the ‘numbers’ where they want it.

I pulled this graphic from HERE.

Of note, there is only one ethnicity where the firearm death rate actually exceeds the automotive death rate.

I get so tired of this, and am reminded of the old saws, ‘The truth can’t even get its pants on before the lies have been around the world twice…

And figures lie and liars figure…

Sigh…

Rut roh…

CNN may be ‘hurting’ if they lose this one!

The case may not be as well known (yet), but CNN could be facing a defamation liability rivaling or exceeding the $787 million Fox News paid out to Dominion Voting Systems. NewsBusters recently reported on Florida’s First District Court of Appeals affirming that plaintiff Zachary Young could seek punitive damages, in addition to economic and emotional damages, from the Cable News Network in a civil trial after they allegedly defamed him regarding his work in getting people out of Afghanistan. The total could near or exceed $1 billion.

For that outcome to be remotely in the cards, Young needed to prove malice and according to the ruling, he’s done exactly that. “Young sufficiently proffered evidence of actual malice, express malice, and a level of conduct outrageous enough to open the door for him to seek punitive damages,” Judge L. Clayton Roberts wrote in the court’s ruling.

Full article, HERE from NewsBusters.

It is about time the news media actually gets sued and has to assume responsibility for the crap they spew about John Q. Public.

For way too long, they have s**t on the ‘little people’, knowing they would never be held accountable for their actions. But now, it appears the courts are not as friendly to the media as they once were.

Personally, I think this is a good thing!!!

But what do I know, I’m just a peon…

LibertyCon AAR…

Flew in Thrusday and Jonna was good enough to pick up. a bunch of us at the CHA airport. When we got to the hotel, I was amazed at how many people were already there! It seems more and more people are now showing up a day early and turning the Con into a four day family get together rather than they usual three day Con.

The whirlwind started early, with old friends greeting each other as they checked in. The bar and lobby filled quickly, with groups shifting as new arrivals greeted folks and the drinks started flowing. As usual, we grabbed our ‘corner’ of the bar and set up there. Between trying to grab something to eat, and talking to folks we haven’t seen in a year, it ‘might’ have gotten a tad loud…LOL

Friday morning started with the usual range shoot, but I chose not to go this year, and spent the morning eating with the usual suspects and trying to figure out what I was going to use for my reading Friday night.

Kudos to Rich, Tish, et al who had to do a MAJOR reschedule due to the convention center having a flood on Tuesday that caused a major shift in panel rooms, etc. They did a yoeman job of reprintig the new schedules and stuffing them into the program booklets!

We did the Trailer Park anthology panel with Three Ravens and had fun with that one, including some of the ‘backstories’ of the stories that ended up in the four (so far) trailer park anthologies.

Opening ceremonies were run by Baen since this is their home con, and Kacey Ezell was the ‘ringmaster’ this year… As always it was interesting and educational!

I got to see the Sailors tell Sea Stories panel and a panel given by our Brit friends on who to write realistic explosions, both very well done, with good examples and humor keeping the attendees interested.

I actually got a chance to attend some panels I wanted to see this year!!! I did a reading of my new short in The Short Stories Friday night in a joint reading with Marina Fontaine (VERY interesting lady) from her Chasing Freedom novel.

As usual the groups floated from bar to lobby, to outside, to bar, to Con suite, ad infinitum throughout the day, into the evening and the early morning. ‘I’ was smart (e.g. tired) and I quit early…LOL

Saturday morning there were some hurting puppies at breakfast and some that didn’t even make breakfast… We did a Wyrd West vs. Science Fiction panel at 1100 that was well received, and had a LOT of panel/crowd interaction, with Lawdog as moderator! People were throwing ideas out and I kept telling the people to just write the damned stories and submit them! Hopefully we’ll be seeing them in anthologies this year and next!!!

At 1400, we did the 10th year of the State of Self Publishing with Dot Grant moderating and once again had an interesting mix of indie and trad put authors in the audience. Dot, Alma TC Boykin and others ran through the changes in the last year, especially with the changes to Keywords, Ad copy, and the impacts of AI on both writing, blurbing, and covers. There was a lot of interaction with the audience in this panel also.

That was it for me, other than author alley on Sunday, so I hit a few other panels I wanted to see, and spent time talking to friends, meeting some new folks, and a few fans that managed to make it this year. We didn’t try to do any special get togethers for meals this year, as it was simply too hard to coordinate with the variety of schedules we had, but kudos to Monalisa and Rick from trying on Friday night.

It was HOT and HUMID all weekend, which limited how much time folks spent out wandering around and sadly I had to leave Sunday to get back for a VA appointment early Monday, so I missed the wrap up and dead dog parties…sigh…

I know I didn’t mention names, because I ran into/talked to WAY too many people to remember everyone and I don’t want to fail to mention somebody, so I just leave the names out (and I’m lousy with names). And sadly, there were a few folks I really wanted to catch up with that I never saw…

But there is always next year! Kudos to the LC group and all the volunteers for another outstanding con!!!

Back in battery!!!

Woof…

Draggin’ ass, but I’m home in one piece. AAR to come tomorrow, but a combo of bad beds, lousy conference chairs (EVERY #$#@#% convention), and forgetting my muscle relaxers (again!) just wore me out.

TL;DR

LibertyCon was good! Busy, lots of good folks, and a chance to meet more fans!

Willie is…

Playing my song again…

Off to LibertyCon in Chattanooga for a few days. Here’s my schedule, and this year I can actually get to see some panels ‘I’ am interested in!

Blogging etc. will be light until next week! Go read the folks on the sidebar, they rite gud!

Raconteur Press is out with antho #30! Alien Family Values

Click on the cover for the Amazon link!

The blurb-

In this volume, you’ll see humans or other species take in orphans, abandoned infants, or even conquered subjects and struggle with adapting their own values and lifestyles to raising and nurturing children from different cultures. Families form strange and wonderful bonds, and each author brings a unique perspective to the ways this happens.

Pam Uphoff as the 11th book out in her CHronicles of the Fall series- Origin Stories

The blurb-

Six stories in the Troystvennyy Soyuz on the run up to and during the Fall of the Alliance.

Young people with problems with the brutal society, and all too often their own families. Young men and women reaching for a better future, as everything changes around them.

Last and certainly not least, Jack Carr has the latest in his Terminal List series out- Red Sky Mourning.

The blurb-

With the walls closing in, Navy SEAL sniper James Reece is on a race to dismantle a conspiracy that has forced America to her knees in the latest high-octane page-turner that seems ripped from the headlines from the “hottest author on the thriller scene today” (The Real Book Spy), #1 New York Times bestseller Jack Carr.

You think you know James Reece. Think again.

A storm is on the horizon. America’s days are numbered. A Chinese submarine has gone rogue and is navigating towards the continental United States, putting its nuclear missiles within striking distance of the West Coast.

A rising Silicon Valley tech mogul with unknown allegiances is at the forefront of a revolution in quantum computing and Artificial Intelligence.

A politician controlled by a foreign power is a breath away from the Oval Office.

Three seemingly disconnected events are on a collision course to ignite a power grab unlike anything the world has ever seen.

The country’s only hope is a quantum computer that has gone dark, retreating to the deepest levels of the internet, learning at a rate inconceivable at her inception. But during her time in hiding, she has done more than learn. She has become a weapon. She is now positioned to act as either the country’s greatest savior or its worst enemy. She is known as “Alice” and her only connection to the outside world is to a former Navy SEAL sniper named James Reece who has left the violence of his past life behind.

Will there be blood?

Count on it!

I highly recommend all of them, although I haven’t finished Jack Carr’s latest, busy trying to get a short story done. Speaking of that, The Short Stories is up to 33 reviews, still trying to get to 50. If you’ve read it, honest reviews are appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Writing stuff…

This is ‘my’ approach to writing short stories, take it for what it’s worth…

e.g. $0…

Seven little items I use…

  1. A character
  2. In context (e.g. what genre)
  3. With a problem
  4. Try/fail cycle by the character (fail)
  5. Try/fail cycle by the character (bigger fail)
  6. One more try/fail or try/succeed (depending on the arc of the story)
  7. Validation or denouement of the character

The other thing I screw up is using the ‘right’ word on occasion… sigh…

Easy words to mix up

eminent v. imminent
eminent: adj. famous and respected within a particular sphere or present to a notable degree
imminent: adj. about to happen
She was an eminent author, winning prestigious awards and accolades. At the moment, what she was most anticipating was not the National Book Award ceremony, however; it was the imminent arrival of her breakfast burrito.

substantive v. substantial
substantive: adj. having a firm basis in reality and so important, meaningful, or considerable
substantial: adj. of considerable importance, size, or worth
My point is substantive, derived from thorough research, and it is this: Your substantial chocolate stash takes up an entire drawer, so you should be willing to share.

censure v. censor
censure: v. express severe disapproval of (someone or something)
censor: v. examine (a book, film, etc.) officially and suppress unacceptable parts of it
They wanted to censor the film, removing the sex scenes. So we censured the decision in a scathing op-ed article called, “Give the People What They Want!”

indeterminate v. indeterminable
indeterminate: adj. not exactly known, established, or defined
indeterminable: adj. not able to be definitely ascertained, calculated, or identified
The goodie bag’s contents were indeterminate until we opened it. There we found a coupon worth “a gajillion hugs,” a number of hugs that was indeterminable.

denote v. connote
denote: v. signify the literal meaning
connote: v. (of a word) imply or suggest (an idea or feeling) in addition to the literal or primary meaning
According to the dictionary, the word denotes strength. Unfortunately, when he used the word to describe my perfume, it seemed to carry a negative connotation, especially once he began coughing.

elude v. allude
elude: v. escape from or avoid (a danger, enemy, or pursuer), typically in a skilful or cunning way; fail to be attained by (someone)
allude: v. suggest or call attention to indirectly; hint at
He eluded the trip to see the horror movie by playing sick, but the following day, when his friends alluded to the scene when the zombie attacks, he actually felt ill.

ambiguous v. ambivalent
ambiguous: adj. open to more than one interpretation; not having one obvious meaning
ambivalent: adj. having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone
She was ambivalent about the date because he was funny but also hogged the popcorn during the movie, which would give anyone mixed feelings. When he sent her an ambiguous text message that she couldn’t decipher, she decided she preferred watching Downton Abbey to dating.

And my ‘favorite’ screw up is queue and cue… How many times… Sigh

A little humor…

To start the week…

Here is the latest from our newly ordained Pope Francis.

Pope Francis recently finished his sermon, ending it with the Latin phrase, “Benedicto Tuti Homini” – Blessed be Mankind.

A Women’s Rights Group approached the Pope the next day. They noticed that the Pope blessed all Mankind, but not Womankind.
So the next day, after his sermon, the Pope concluded by saying, “Benedicto Tuti Homini et Tuti Femini” – Blessed be Mankind and Womankind.

The day after, a Gay Rights Group approached the Pope. They said that they noticed that he blessed Mankind and Womankind and asked if he could also bless gay people.

The Pope said, “Sure.”

The next day the Pope concluded his sermon with, “Benedicto Tuti Homini, et Tuti Femini, et Tuti Frutti.”

A modern day cowboy has spent many days crossing the Dakota prairies without water.

His horse had already died of thirst. He’s crawling along the dusty ground, certain that he has breathed his last breath, when all of a sudden he sees an object sticking out of the ground several yards ahead of him.

He crawls to the object, pulls it out of the ground and discovers what looks to be an old briefcase.

He opens it and out pops a genie.

But this is no ordinary genie.

She is wearing an Internal Revenue Service ID badge and a dull grey dress.

There’s a calculator in her pocketbook.  She has a pencil tucked behind one ear. ”Well, cowboy,” says the genie,

”You know how I work … You have three wishes.”

”I’m not falling for this,” said the cowboy,

”I’m not going to trust an IRS genie.”

”What do you have to lose? You’ve got no transportation, and it looks like you’re a goner anyway!”

The cowboy thinks about this for a minute and decides that the genie is right.

”OK! I wish I were along-side a lush spring with plenty of food and drink.”

***POOF***

The cowboy finds himself beside the most beautiful spring he has ever seen, and he’s surrounded with jugs of wine and platters of delicacies.

”OK, cowpoke, what’s your second wish.”

”My second wish is that I was rich …. beyond my wildest dreams.”

** *POOF***

The cowboy finds himself surrounded by treasure chests filled with rare gold coins and precious gems.

”OK, cowpuncher, you have just one more wish.

Better make it a good one!”

After thinking for a few minutes, the cowboy says,  ”I wish that no matter where I go, beautiful women will want and need me.”

***POOF***

He was turned into a tampon.

Moral of the story: If the U.S. government offers to help you, there’s going to be a string attached.

Directly in front of you is another galloping horse but your horse is unable to overtake it.

Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the horse in front of you.

What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?

V GER is back!!!

After eight months, all is well, again!

NASA announced Friday that its Voyager 1 spacecraft, which is over 15 billion miles away from Earth, is again fully operational following technical issues that arose in November 2023.

The agency said it partially resolved an issue in April, but it wasn’t until recently that it was able to receive data from all four instruments aboard the probe.

The four instruments study plasma waves, magnetic fields and particles in interstellar space.

Full article, HERE from Fox.

JPL Pasadena had been troubleshooting since November, and finally ‘kicked’ the right part to get it out of the loop it was in!

Voyager is coming up on 50 years since the launch, and is well out into deep space, well beyond its original tasking for fly bys of Jupiter and her moons.

Amazing that both V1 and V2 are still operating! That is a tribute to the ‘old school’ engineers and scientists that built and programmed them. Kudos to all!!!

Well, well, well…

It seems the past has critical information on Antarctica…

A study using a whaler’s forgotten aerial photos from 1937 shows East Antarctica’s ice has been stable and even grown, despite some early signs of weakening.

Extreme weather, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels are all indicators that the climate and the world’s ice masses are in a critical state. However, a new study from the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen reveals a positive anomaly.

Using hundreds of old aerial photographs dating back to 1937, combined with modern computer technology, researchers have tracked the evolution of glaciers in East Antarctica. This area, which spans approximately 2,000 kilometers of coastline, contains as much ice as the entire Greenland Ice Sheet. By comparing the historical aerial photos with modern satellite data, researchers determined the glaciers’ movement and changes in size, revealing that the ice has not only remained stable but also grown slightly over the last 85 years, partly due to increased snowfall.

Full article, HERE from SciTech Daily

So much for the Chicken Little BS… The ice isn’t going to melt ‘next’ year, or 12 years or…

Three sets of studies, by three different sets of scientists, over almost 40 years shows ‘minor’ changes but…

The TL:DR- “They have remained stable or grown slightly in the long term, indicating a system in balance.”

Once again actual research has trumped the climate change agenda and ‘heat death’ of the world due to (insert reason here).

Sigh…
