A Chance Encounter…

Frequent commenter Toejam sent this via email, and posted with his permission…

I was shopping at a local(North Carolina) “Harris Teeter” supermarket today. As chance would have it I pulled into a parking space next to a 7 year old Buick sedan. As I walked toward the store I noticed the license plate had: “Recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross” on it. That’s one step below the “Congressional Medal of Honor” for you non-military types.

Suddenly a stooped, Silver-grey haired man approached. He was stooped & old but he had a special sparkle in his eyes.

I asked if this Buick was his. He said “yes sir it is”. Here standing next to me was the WW-II pilot of a B-17 that was shot down over Europe and he called me “Sir”!

3 out of 4 engines of his B-17 were shot totally out by flack at 26,000 feet and the plane was starting to spiral down. He ordered his 9 man crew to bail out, but he decided to stick with the plane to try and keep it fairly level till the men got out. Finally, it was his turn. He jumped at barely 500 feet.

He didn’t say how many of the crew survived and I didn’t ask. The survivors were aided by the “partisans” and, after a long cold trek, they got back to American lines.

Here we were standing in the middle of a busy parking lot, me listening and him telling me this like he was reliving a dream. Cars were backed up but neither of us noticed.

Finally, I thanked him for his service and his heroic deed. He gave me a card with his address and phone number. Then while getting into his car he smiled and said: “come over for a visit some time and we’ll have a longer talk.”

You can bet I’ll take him up on the offer.

The LINK is the abbreviated story of the B-17 Pilot Toejam met today. A humble, polite but very proud member of the “Greatest Generation”.

When Toejam does meet with LT Logan, I’ll post it here.

I wonder…

How far are we away from this happening again???

This was sent by a friend who’s dad was there in 1932… And he said he’s seeing the handwriting on the wall…

The mood of the country is DEFINITELY not positive right now, and I cannot remember the divisions being this deep in my lifetime…

There has been a purge of brass across the entire military structure both on the high ranking officers and senior enlisted ranks, and it seems to be continuing and now dropping down to the O-6 (Col/Capt) ranks.  What is also happening is the O-5s and E-7s are retiring rather than trying to grab the brass ring one more time…

This means most of those in the senior ranks have drunk the koolaid and will do (or be forced by higher) to do what ever is required by the administration…

And then there is Sequestration…

And we hear of DHS forming a military ‘army’ of ‘federal’ officers to counter demonstrations inside the USA.

And it seems that anyone who is former military, Christian, believes in freedom, etc. is now being classified as a ‘domestic terrorist’, while the real terrorists are being quietly removed from lists, bought off, cooperated with by this administration…

I just don’t see this ending well, not at all.

I’m I being totally paranoid here???

Here we go again… Sigh…

The PSH has started yet again over the ‘invisible’ weapons…

Federal law enforcement authorities are raising concerns new, futuristic 3-D printed guns made entirely out of plastic could pose a myriad of security threats across the U.S., as a law banning undetectable firearms is set to expire.

3-D industrial printers that can create plastic models and prototypes can make workable guns that can’t be picked up by metal detectors, and officials say they could pose a threat to countless government institutions, schools and other buildings.

And is anyone surprised by ‘these’ statements???

A longtime ban on undetectable firearms is scheduled to expire Dec. 9 and two Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer of New York and Bill Nelson of Florida, have called for a ban on plastic guns. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., also has introduced legislation on the issue.

“The expiration of this law, combined with advances in 3-D printing, make what was once a hypothetical threat into a terrifying reality,” said Schumer. “We are actively exploring all options to pass legislation that will eliminate the problem.”

Full article HERE from Fox.

Didn’t we go through this when Glocks first came to the US???

And the supposed ‘ceramic’ pistols???

But the horse is out of the barn now, and it’s awfully hard to close that door. I can’t help but wonder if Chuck U Schumer will try to ban Glocks, S&W M&P and all the other polymer pistols while he’s at it???

And what about the AR lowers? And… And… And…

Sigh…

WTF???

So BO apparently went on TeeWee today and said, “It’s on him” for the Obummercare screw up, and now he’s decided you ‘can’ keep your policy…

BUT, can you see ANY insurance company putting those policies back in for only a year, and I really don’t see how either BO or the Congresscritters can force them to do it…

Cause the insurance companies have spent three years ‘crafting’ policies that will meet the new rules…

Am I wrong here???

I got nuthin…

Can’t find anything good to say, so I’m going with jokes… sigh…

It seems that God was tired, and wanted to take a vacation. However, being everywhere at once, it was a little difficult for him to decide on where to go. So, he called the Archangel Gabriel in on the carpet…

GOD: Gabe, I’ve got a problem, and I was hoping you could help me out.

GABRIEL: I’ll try lord.

GOD: Well, I need a vacation, and I can’t decide where I should go, and I was hoping that you could give me some suggestions.

( Gabriel thinks intently for a few seconds,…)

GABRIEL: How about Mercury? That’s a nice place.

GOD: Nope, too hot. It takes all night to get over the sun-burn you got during the day.

( Gabriel thinks a little longer…..)

GABRIEL: Hmmmm,…. Well, how about Mars?

GOD: Nope, Mars is too much of a party place. All that whooping and hollering, I never get any rest when I go there.

( Gabriel is starting to get a little desperate by this time….)

GABRIEL: Well, how about Earth?

GOD: NO!! No Way!! The last time I went there, I got this little Jewish girl pregnant, and I haven’t heard the end of that yet!

Here’s another one….

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates.  St. Peter checks his dossier and says, “Ah, you’re an engineer — you’re in the wrong place.”

So the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements.  After a while, they’ve got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day, God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer,

“So, how’s it going down there in hell?”

Satan replies, “Hey, things are going great.  We’ve got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there’s no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next.”

God replies, “What???  You’ve got an engineer?  That’s a mistake -he should never have gotten down there; send him up here.”

Satan says, “No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I’m keeping him.”

God says, “Send him back up here or I’ll sue.”

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, “Yeah, right.  And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?”

And a couple of pics that kinda say it all…

I REALLY need one of these for the commute to work…

It just proves the ‘real’ traditions of the Navy are alive and well in that they truly take care of shipmates, young AND old…

RIP EM2 Cloud, the kids are picking up the tradition you helped start…

Sequestration be damned…

The Navy and Marines are doing their jobs and once again responding to a natural disaster…

WASHINGTON (NNS) — Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has ordered the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) and other U.S. Navy ships to make best speed for the Republic of the Philippines.

The aircraft carrier, which carries 5,000 Sailors and more than 80 aircraft, is currently in Hong Kong for a port visit. The crew is being recalled early from shore leave and the ship is expected to be underway later this evening.

In company with the carrier will be the cruisers USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Cowpens (CG 63), and the destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89). The supply ship USNS Charles Drew (T-AKE-10) is already underway and will rendezvous with the group as they get closer. USS Lassen (DDG 82) got underway yesterday for the region. Embarked on board USS George Washington, is Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5).

CVW-5 is a collection of aircraft designed to perform various functions including disaster relief and includes the “Golden Falcons” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 12 flying the MH-60S Seahawk; and the “Saberhawks” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 77 flying the MH-60R Seahawk.

As needed, these ships and aircraft will be able to provide humanitarian assistance, supplies, and medical care in support of the ongoing efforts led by the government and military of the Republic of the Philippines.

The ships should be on station within 48-72 hours. The Defense Department is continuing to work closely with the Philippine government to determine what, if any, additional assets may be required.

From the BBC.

Roughly 250 Marines and sailors with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade are on the ground in the Philippines as of Tuesday morning. Their chief mission is to support the Philippine military in lifting support materials into the disaster zone, as well as evacuating Americans and injured locals.  BG Paul Kennedy, the III MEB commander, toured the disaster zone by plane shortly after arriving there.

I understand from folks in theater there will be a pretty large effort, much like what USS LINCOLN did during the Indonesian earthquakes…

I’m sure the UN will try to take credit, and I really hope they don’t try (again) to make our Sailors and Marines wear the Blue Beanies…

But it’s interesting that there is little to no coverage of this other than Fox and foreign news services…

And I’m betting the administration won’t cough up any extra funds to replace what’s being used in the HA/DR efforts, or replace any of the consumables that go over the side to support those in need.

Efficient Gun Control that makes sense…

  • In 1865 a Democrat shot and killed Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States
  • In 1881 a left wing radical Democrat shot James Garfield, President of the United States , who later died from the wound.
  • In 1963 a radical left wing socialist shot and killed John F. Kennedy, President of the United States .
  • In 1975 a left wing radical Democrat fired shots at Gerald Ford, President of the United States .
  • In 1981 a registered Democrat shot and wounded Ronald Reagan, President of the United States .
  • In 1984 James Hubert, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 22 people in a McDonalds restaurant.
  • In 1986 Patrick Sherrill, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 15 people in an Oklahoma post office.
  • In 1990 James Pough, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 10 people at a GMAC office.
  • In 1991 George Hennard, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 23 people in a Luby’s cafeteria.
  • In 1995 James Daniel Simpson, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 5 coworkers in a Texas laboratory.
  • In 1999 Larry Asbrook, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 8 people at a church service.
  • In 2001 a left wing radical Democrat fired shots at the White House in a failed attempt to kill George W. Bush, President of the US .

  • In 2010 a mentally ill registered Democrat named Jared Lee Loughner, shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed 6 others.
  • In 2011 a registered Democrat named James Holmes, went into a movie theater and shot and killed 12 people.
  • In 2012 Andrew Engeldinger, a disgruntled Democrat, shot and killed 7 people in Minneapolis .
  • In 2013 a registered Democrat named Adam Lanza, shot and killed 26 people in a school.
  • Recently an angry Democrat shoots 12 at a Navy ship yard.

One could go on, but you get the point, even if the media does not.  Clearly, there is a problem with Democrats and guns.

No NRA member, Tea Party member, or Republican conservatives are involved.

SOLUTION:  It should be illegal for Democrats to own guns.

Makes sense to me , and the best idea I’ve heard to date…

Tulsa Gun Show AAR…

OH my aching doggies…  Sigh…

Three days of walking around on a hard concrete floor has my dogs ‘barking’ and then some…

My impressions were that the crowds were down, but a lot more women shopping alone or in packs, including home defense shotguns, carry pistols and CCW purses (there were at least four or five people selling directly to women which I believe is good)!  ARs are coming back to reality (e.g. stripped ARs back below $1000) lots of barrels available, LOTS of nicky neat scopes/red & green dots (good = pricey), high dollar stuff was higher than last year, and even ‘junk’ pieces were pricey if either S&W or Colt on the side.  The one thing I didn’t see were the big displays from manufacturers that were there in the past, and some of the bigger ‘players’ were scaling back.  The blame seems to lie with Ebay (pieces/parts) and online gun auctions (trojan bidders at the last minute) and lots of guns with huge reserves on them.

The true idiocy is now becoming original wood stocks for pistols/milsurp rifles!  I saw $500 for an original set of late 60s Python grips, $550 for an original 1903 C-stock with cartouches!!!

I saw milsurp parts going for big (to me) $$, $200 plus for complete 03-A3 bolts, $50 for complete barrel bands and milled bayonet lugs, etc; and I saw a guy spend over $1400 for an M-1 JUST to get the Winchester receiver out of it (he said he had all Winchester parts to build a complete Winchester M-1).

Forty-mumble years ago we literally FILLED a long bed pickup with 1903, 1917, M-1, M-1 Carbine and M-14 stocks that were ALL perfect and we sold them for $25-$40 bucks up through the late 80s… sigh…

And a damn wooden rifle box full of 1903 and 03-A3 parts including complete bolts, receivers, scope mounts, barrel bands and misc. parts we sold for $100 because we got tired of moving the damn thing around (it took two of us just to slide it across the floor)… double sigh…

Here are couple of better pics of the K-22 (again thanks to Tam for the advice), it was built in 1975, and on further inspection, looks like it was ONLY test fired!  And in answer to the emails; yes, I did get the box, paperwork and tools with it.

There is a small nick in the left stock just forward of the screw, but I’m not going to worry about it…

Veterans Day…

To all those who’ve served, THANK YOU!!!

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies.  A Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday: “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day’.”

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the “Father of Veterans Day.”

U.S. Representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954.[3]

Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and it has been known as Veterans Day since.
